„A Song: Men of England” de Percy Bysshe Shelley

Men of England, wherefore plough
For the lords who lay ye low?
Wherefore weave with toil and care
The rich robes your tyrants wear?
Voi, englezi, de ce araţi
Pentru domnii îmbuibaţi?
De ce-i ţeseţi cu migală
Despotului strai de gală?

„The World” de William Wordsworth

The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers:
Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
This sea that bares her bosom to the moon;
The winds that will be howling at all hours,
And are up-gather’d now like sleeping flowers;
For this, for everything, we are out of tune;
It moves us not.—Great God! I’d rather be
A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn;
So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathèd horn.
Prea vast ni-i universul; azi şi mâini,
Luând şi dând, puterile ne scad;
Din ea Natura prea puţin ne-a dat;
Plătirăm scump pe ce suntem stăpâni.
Sub lună despuiaţii mării sâni,
Vântoasele ce sună neîncetat
Par snop de flori dormind, înmănunchiat;

„To a Mountain Daisy” de Robert Burns

Wee, modest, crimson-tippèd flow’r,
Thou’s met me in an evil hour;
For I maun crush amang the stoure
Thy slender stem:
To spare thee now is past my pow’r,
Thou bonie gem.
Sfioasă, albă floricea,
A rânduit ce soartă rea
Să-ţi frângă azi cormana mea
Trupul plăpând?
Când viaţa eu n-aş mai putea
Să-ţi dau nicicând!

„The First Kiss of Love” de George Gordon Byron

Away with your fictions of flimsy romance;
Those tissues of falsehood which folly has wove!
Give me the mild beam of the soul-breathing glance,
Or the rapture which dwells on the first kiss of love.
Mi-e silă de-acele neroade visări
Pe care minciuna, târâş, le-a ţesut.
Voi daţi-mi, deci, raza, candidei mirări
Şi vraja-mpletită de-ntâiul sărut.

„The Solitary Reaper” de William Wordsworth

Behold her, single in the field,
Yon solitary Highland Lass!
Reaping and singing by herself;
Stop here, or gently pass!
Alone she cuts and binds the grain,
And sings a melancholy strain;
O listen! for the Vale profound
Is overflowing with the sound.
Munteanca e în lan. Priveşte!
A coborât dinspre brădet
Şi seceră stingher, cântând –
Opreşte-te sau treci încet!
Ea taie grâu, leagă snopi
Şi zice viers duios. Ascultă!
Întreaga vale adâncată
Răsună de cântare multă.

„Elegy On Willie Nicol’s Mare” de Robert Burns

Peg Nicholson was a good bay mare,
As ever trod on airn;
But now she’s floating down the Nith,
And past the mouth o’ Cairn.
Peg Nicholson a fost o iapă,
Şi umblă-acum fără picioare,
Cu vechile-i potcoave-n talpă,
Pe râu la vale, către Mare.
Peg Nicholson was a good bay mare,
An’ rode thro’ thick and thin;
But now she’s floating down the Nith,
And wanting even the skin.
Peg fost-a cea mai bună iapă
Din câte-au frământat vâlcele;
Acuma saltă-ncet pe apă,
Şi-au mai belit-o şi de piele.
Peg Nicholson was a good bay mare,
And ance she bore a priest;
But now she’s floating down the Nith,
For Solway fish a feast.
Cât a trăit, prea buna gloabă,
L-a dus pe preot în spinare;
Acum, bătrâna ei epavă
La peşti le duce de mâncare.
Peg Nicholson was a good bay mare,
An’ the priest he rode her sair;
And much oppress’d and bruis’d she was,
As priest-rid cattle are.
Peg Nicholson n-a fost o iapă,
Ci o făptură creştinească,
Ce-a călărit-o pân’ la groapă
Cinstita tagmă preoţească.
Robert Burns traducere de Mihnea Gheorghiu
