“How does the water
Come down at Lodore?”
My little boy asked me
Thus once on a time;
And moreover he tasked me
To tell him in rhyme.
Anon, at the word,
There first came one daughter,
And then came another,
To second and third
The request of their brother,
And to hear how the water
Comes down at Lodore,
With its rush and its roar,
As many a time
They had seen it before.
So I told them in rhyme,
For of rhymes I had store;
And ’t was in my vocation
For their recreation
That so I should sing,
Because I was Laureate
To them and the king. |
Cum vine oare apa la Lodora?
Odrasla într-o bună zi îmi cere
Să-i povestesc. Eu, vrând să-i fac plăcere,

To the Lords of Convention ’twas Claver’se who spoke,
‘Ere the King’s crown shall fall there are crowns to be broke;
So let each Cavalier who loves honour and me,
Come follow the bonnet of Bonny Dundee.
Come fill up my cup, come fill up my can,
Come saddle your horses, and call up your men;
Come open the West Port and let me gang free,
And it’s room for the bonnets of Bonny Dundee!’ |
Spre Lorzi a zis Claver cuvintele-aceste:
„Mai sunt, pân’la Rigă, de spart şi-alte ţeste;
Deci toţi câţi vor cintei şi mie-a-mi sluji,
Urmeze tichia lui Bonnie Dundee.
Umpleţi-mi bărdaca, năstrapa şi, hai,
Chemaţi-vă oastea şi-ndată pe cai!
Deschideţi larg Poarta-de-Apus, spre-a ieşi
Tichia şi scoţii lui Bonnie Dundee!” |

They sin who tell us Love can die.
With life all other passions fly,
All others are but vanity.
In Heaven Ambition cannot dwell,
Nor Avarice in the vaults of Hell;
Earthly these passions of the Earth,
They perish where they have their birth;
But Love is indestructible.
Its holy flame for ever burneth,
From Heaven it came, to Heaven returneth;
Too oft on Earth a troubled guest,
At times deceived, at time opprest,
It here is tried and purified,
Then hath in Heaven its perfect rest:
It soweth here with toil and care,
But the harvest time of Love is there. |
Numai iubirea este de neînfrânt,
Când alte patimi, dor, plăceri, avânt,
Toate deşertăciune sunt,
Ambiţia în ceruri n-are vad,
Nici calicia-n hrubele din iad.
Ţărână-s pasiunile de lut
Şi pier în clipa-n care s-au născut.
Iubirea însă e dăinuitoare –
Sfinţita-i flacără în veci nu moare;
Din rai coboară şi se-ntoarce-n rai.
Ea pe pământul nostru prea ades
E-un oaspe trist, trădat sau nenţeles;
Aici se limpezeşte-a ei lumină
Şi dobândeşte-odihnă-n cer deplină.
Jos ea doar seamănă, trudind nespus,
Dar vremea ei de seceriş e sus. |

A well there is in the West country,
And a clearer one never was seen;
There is not a wife in the West country
But has heard of the Well of St. Keyne. |
În ţara de apus e-un puţ
Cu apă de cleştar, pe nume
Fântâna Sfintei Keyne; şi-l ştie
Întreaga femeiască lume. |

| Or, a vision in a dream. A Fragment. |
Viziune dintr-un vis |
In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.
So twice five miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers were girdled round;
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,
Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree;
And here were forests ancient as the hills,
Enfolding sunny spots of greenery. |
La Xanadu vru Kubla Han
Un dom-al-poftelor, pe unde
Alf, râul sfânt, curgea avan
Prin peşterile mult afunde
Spre-a mării sumbre unde.
Deci dar, a-ncins cu foişoare
Şi zid o vale roditoare,
Aici: grădini, pâraie-ntortocheate
Şi mulţi arbuşti mustind tămâie;
Şi codrii vechi, de când e lumea poate,
Vrând, parcă, pajiţti să mângâie. |

Look not thou on beauty’s charming,
Sit thou still when kings are arming,
Taste not when the wine-cup glistens,
Speak not when the people listens,
Stop thine ear against the singer,
From the red gold keep thy finger;
Vacant heart and hand and eye,
Easy live and quiet die. |
Nu căta spre nuri de fată;
Pe regi lasă-i să se bată,
Băutură nu bea multă;
Taci când lumea vezi c-ascultă;
Surd la viersul din lăute,
Către aur nu te-asmute;
Când nimic nu ai, ai parte
De trai bun şi lină moarte. |
