„The Little Black Boy” de William Blake

My mother bore me in the southern wild,
And I am black, but O! my soul is white;
White as an angel is the English child:
But I am black as if bereav’d of light.
Eu sunt copilul sudului idiot!
Sunt negru – dar alb e sufletul meu.
Copilul de englez lumină-i tot!
Dar eu sunt negru, n-am lumină eu.

„A Boy’s Song” de James Hogg

Where the pools are bright and deep,
Where the grey trout lies asleep,
Up the river and over the lea,
That ‘s the way for Billy and me.
Unde-s iezerele-adânci,
Şi prinzi păstrăvi pe sub stânci,
Sus la deal şi-n lunci, e bine
Şi de Billy şi de mine.
Where the blackbird sings the latest,
Where the hawthorn blooms the sweetest,
Where the nestlings chirp and flee,
That ‘s the way for Billy and me.
Unde mierlele-ntârzie,
Şi răsura dulce-adie,
Unde cuiburile-s pline,
E de Billy şi de mine.
Where the mowers mow the cleanest,
Where the hay lies thick and greenest,
There to track the homeward bee,
That ‘s the way for Billy and me.
Unde iarba, toporaşii
Le cosesc de zor cosaşii,
Şi se-ntorc la stupi albine,
E de Billy şi de mine.
Where the hazel bank is steepest,
Where the shadow falls the deepest,
Where the clustering nuts fall free,
That ‘s the way for Billy and me.
Unde cresc pe râpi aluni,
Unde-i umbră ca-n genuni,
Şi cad nucile ciorchine,
E de Billy şi de mine.
Why the boys should drive away
Little sweet maidens from the play,
Or love to banter and fight so well,
That ‘s the thing I never could tell.
La ce bun din joc să scoată
Băieţandrii orice fată?
Cum, iubirea nu le place?
Asta n-o pricep, şi pace!
But this I know, I love to play
Through the meadow, among the hay;
Up the water and over the lea,
That ‘s the way for Billy and me.
Dar îmi place să rămân,
Ştiu, în pajiştea cu fân;
Prin livezi, la gârle line,
E de Billy şi de mine.

„Lines Written On A Banknote” de Robert Burns

Wae worth thy power, thou cursed leaf!
Fell source o’ a’ my woe and grief!
For lack o’ thee I’ve lost my lass!
For lack o’ thee I scrimp my glass!
I see the children of affliction
Unaided, through thy curst restriction:
I’ve seen the oppressor’s cruel smile
Amid his hapless victim’s spoil;
And for thy potence vainly wished,
To crush the villain in the dust:
For lack o’ thee, I leave this much-lov’d shore,
Never, perhaps, to greet old Scotland more.
Blestem pe capul tău, piţulă ştearsă,
Că m-ai lăsat mereu cu buza arsă;
La cel sărman, acel ce-l asupreşte;

Get up, get up for shame, the Blooming Morne
Upon her wings presents the god unshorne.
See how Aurora throwes her faire
Fresh-quilted colours through the aire:
Get up, sweet-Slug-a-bed, and see
The Dew-bespangling Herbe and Tree.
Each Flower has wept, and bow’d toward the East,
Above an houre since; yet you not drest,
Nay! not so much as out of bed?
When all the Birds have Mattens seyd,
And sung their thankful Hymnes: ‘tis sin,
Nay, profanation to keep in,
When as a thousand Virgins on this day,
Spring, sooner than the Lark, to fetch in May.
Trezeşte-te din somn, hai! Zorii noi
Cu ei aduc un zeu cu păr vâlvoi.
Priveşte-a mândrei Aurori
Împrăştiere de culori;
Sus, trândăvioară, sus şi iată
Frunzar şi iarbă rourată!
Spre soare tot ce-i floare s-a-nchinat
De-un ceas, şi tu tot nu te-ai îmbrăcat;

„To Daffodils” de Robert Herrick

Fair Daffodils, we weep to see
You haste away so soon;
As yet the early-rising sun
Has not attain’d his noon.
Stay, stay,
Until the hasting day
Has run
But to the even-song;
And, having pray’d together, we
Will go with you along.
Narcise mândre, ne-ntristăm
Văzându-vă atât de trecătoare!
Amiaza n-a atins-o încă
De vreme răsăritul soare.
Staţi, staţi,
Pân’ ce zorita zi
Va prinde-a lâncezi
Într-al vecerniei blând ceas,
Când ne vom lua, îngenuncheaţi,
Cu voi odată, bun rămas.
We have short time to stay, as you,
We have as short a spring;
As quick a growth to meet decay,
As you, or anything.
We die
As your hours do, and dry
Away,
Like to the summer’s rain;
Or as the pearls of morning’s dew,
Ne’er to be found again.
Şi noi ne trecem prea curând;
Nici primăvara noastră mult nu ţine;
Grăbim spre moarte fremătând,
Ca voi, ca fiecine.
Popasul ce-l ştim noi
E scurt ca şi al vostru; – apoi
Ne spulberăm
Ca ploaia repede de vară,
Ca perlele de rouă din zăvoi,
Născute ca să moară.

„The Death and Dying Words of Poor Mailie” de Robert Burns

“O thou, whase lamentable face
Appears to mourn my woefu’ case!
My dying words attentive hear,
An’ bear them to my Master dear.
“Tell him, if e’er again he keep
As muckle gear as buy a sheep—
O, curgi tu lacrimă pe nas,
Tu vers, fă-i jalnic parastas
Căci bardul e la greu impas
Şi leacuri nu-s…
Sărmana Maillie, jalnic ceas!
S-a stins, s-a dus…
