How pleasant the banks of the clear winding Devon,
With green spreading bushes and flow’rs blooming fair!
But the boniest flow’r on the banks of the Devon
Was once a sweet bud on the braes of the Ayr.
Mild be the sun on this sweet blushing flower,
In the gay rosy morn, as it bathes in the dew;
And gentle the fall of the soft vernal shower,
That steals on the evening each leaf to renew! |
În zorile roze stropite cu rouă;
Uşor s-o dezmirede Prier cu ploi calde
Ce spală şi-mproaspătă frunza cea nouă! |
O spare the dear blossom, ye orient breezes,
With chill hoary wing as ye usher the dawn;
And far be thou distant, thou reptile that seizes
The verdure and pride of the garden or lawn!
Let Bourbon exult in his gay gilded lilies,
And England triumphant display her proud rose:
A fairer than either adorns the green valleys,
Where Devon, sweet Devon, meandering flows. |
Scuteşte-o, tu, Vifor, de recile-ţi pulberi,
Cu-aripa-ţi brumată de ger nu mi-o pirde;
Rămâi, hăt, departe, balaur ce-i spulberi
Livezii şi luncii podoaba cea verde.
Anine-şi Burbonul cu ifose crinii
Şi Anglia poarte-şi fălos trandafirul!
Mai scumpă e floarea din ţara grădinii
Prin care, lin, Devon îşi unduie firul. |

I
O my agéd Uncle Arly! –
Sitting on a heap of Barley
All the silent hours of night, –
Close beside a leafy thicket: –
On his nose there was a Cricket, –
In his hat a Railway Ticket; –
(But his shoes were far too tight.) |
I
Bătrânul, bunul unchi Quatorze
Stând pe o grămadă de orz
În noaptea liniştitoare –
Lângă-nfrunzitul boschet –
Pe nas c-un greier desuet,
În pălărie c-un bilet
(Pantofii-l strângeau mult prea tare). |

Who, or why, or which, or what,
Is the Akond of Swat? |
Cine, de ce, care sau ce ar
Putea fi Akond din SKAR? |
Is he tall or short, or dark or fair?
Does he sit on a stool or a sofa or chair,
OR SQUAT?
The Akond of Swat? |
E brun sau blond, înalt ori scund?
Stă pe-un divan, pe-un scaun rotund,
SAU ÎNTR-UN PAR,
Acel Akond din Skar? |

Hail to thee, blithe Spirit!
Bird thou never wert,
That from Heaven, or near it,
Pourest thy full heart
In profuse strains of unpremeditated art. |
Slavă, duh șăgalnic
(Pasăre nu ești!)
Ce, din cer, năvalnic
Inima-ți goleşti
În şuvoi de triluri limpezi şi fireşti! |

I fear thy kisses, gentle maiden;
Thou needest not fear mine;
My spirit is too deeply laden
Ever to burthen thine. |
De-al tău sărut mi-e teamă, fată,
Să nu te temi de-al meu.
Povară n-am să-ţi fiu vreodată:
Mi-e sufletul prea greu. |
I fear thy mien, thy tones, thy motion;
Thou needest not fear mine;
Innocent is the heart’s devotion
With which I worship thine. |
Mă tem de-a ta înfăţişare,
Să nu te temi de-a mea:
Curată-i inima cu care
O îndrăgesc pe-a ta. |

I think of thee!—my thoughts do twine and bud
About thee, as wild vines, about a tree,
Put out broad leaves, and soon there ‘s nought to see
Except the straggling green which hides the wood.
Yet, O my palm-tree, be it understood
I will not have my thoughts instead of thee
Who art dearer, better! Rather, instantly
Renew thy presence; as a strong tree should,
Rustle thy boughs and set thy trunk all bare,
And let these bands of greenery which insphere thee
Drop heavily down,—burst, shattered, everywhere!
Because, in this deep joy to see and hear thee
And breathe within thy shadow a new air,
I do not think of thee—I am too near thee. |
Gândind la tine, gândurile mele
ca viţele sălbatice–nconjoară
copacul, ce sub verdea lor povară
abia se vede prin frunzişuri grele.
Şi totuşi nu vreau, nalte palmier,
aceste gânduri locul tău să-l ţină;
tu-mi eşti mai scump. Arată-te-n lumină,
un trunchi ce pururi tinde către cer.
Tu lasă deci lianele-nnodate
să cadă-n fine de pe trunchiul tău.
Te văd, te-aud, – o, bucurii depline! –
respir în umbra ta, şi-ades se poate
să uit astfel a mă gândi la tine.
Sunt prea aproape ca s-o fac mereu. |
