Titan! to whose immortal eyes
The sufferings of mortality,
Seen in their sad reality,
Were not as things that gods despise;
What was thy pity’s recompense?
A silent suffering, and intense;
The rock, the vulture, and the chain,
All that the proud can feel of pain,
The agony they do not show,
The suffocating sense of woe,
Which speaks but in its loneliness,
And then is jealous lest the sky
Should have a listener, nor will sigh
Until its voice is echoless. |
Titan! Al omenirii chin,
Mereu dispreţuit de zei,
În ochii-ţi, veşnice scântei,
S-a oglindit întreg, hain.
Ţi-a fost răsplată suferinţa
Care ţi-a măcinat fiinţa,
Şi lanţul, vulturul, o stâncă,
Tortura crâncenă şi-adâncă
Pe care-o inimă vitează,
Doar solitudinii-o trădează,
În mândra ei însingurare, –
Dar şi atunci cu-o şoaptă mută
Ca cel de sus să nu-i audă
Suspinul stins în murmurare. |

The fountains mingle with the river
And the rivers with the ocean,
The winds of heaven mix for ever
With a sweet emotion;
Nothing in the world is single;
All things by a law divine
In one spirit meet and mingle.
Why not I with thine?—
See the mountains kiss high heaven
And the waves clasp one another;
No sister-flower would be forgiven
If it disdained its brother;
And the sunlight clasps the earth
And the moonbeams kiss the sea:
What is all this sweet work worth
If thou kiss not me? |
Trec izvoarele în râuri,
Râurile curg spre mare.
Nevăzute, limpezi brâuri
Leagă boarea de-altă boare.
Nu-i nimic stingher în Fire:
Toate tind să se îmbine
Într-o tainică iubire –
De ce nu şi eu cu tine?
Munţii-aştern pe cer săruturi,
Val cu val se-mbrăţişează.
Care-i floarea fără fluturi?
Am fugi de ea cu groază.
Soarele în braţe strânge
Lumea. Luna îşi sărută
Marea. Truda mea s-ar frânge
Fără-al tău sărut, pierdută! |

Oft, in the stilly night,
Ere slumber’s chain has bound me,
Fond memory brings the light
Of other days around me;
The smiles, the tears,
Of boyhood’s years,
The words of love then spoken;
The eyes that shone,
Now dimm’d and gone,
The cheerful hearts now broken!
Thus, in the stilly night,
Ere slumber’s chain hath bound me,
Sad memory brings the light
Of other days around me. |
Ades la blândul nopţii ceas,
Când somnul încă nu mă-mbie,
Duioase amintiri dau glas
Zilelor duse pe vecie.
Plâns, râset de demult
Aievea sunt; ascult
Destăinuirile de dor,
Văd ochi vioi alt’dat’
Şi parcă simt cum bat
Prin vreme, inimile lor
Astfel, la blândul nopţii ceas,
Când somnul încă nu mă-mbie,
Duioase amintiri dau glas
Zilelor duse pe vecie. |
When I remember all
The friends, so link’d together,
I’ve seen around me fall,
Like leaves in wintry weather;
I feel like one
Who treads alone
Some banquet-hall deserted,
Whose lights are fled,
Whose garlands dead,
And all but he departed!
Thus, in the stilly night,
Ere slumber’s chain has bound me,
Sad memory brings the light
Of other days around me. |
Atunci când îmi apar în gând
Prietenii de joc sau carte,
Toţi cei ce i-am văzut căzând
Ca-n fapt de iarnă frunze moarte,
Îmi pare rău că străbat
Stingher, un vechi palat,
Cu larg deschise porţi şi uşi,
Stricate lampadare,
Ghirlande-cenuşare,
Şi toţi afar’ de mine, duşi.
Astfel, la blândul nopţii ceas,
Când somnul încă nu mă-mbie,
Duioase amintiri dau glas
Zilelor duse pe vecie. |

Those evening bells! those evening bells!
How many a tale their music tells
Of youth, and home, and that sweet time
When last I heard their soothing chime! |
Clopot târziu, clopotul blând,
Atâta dor mi-aduce-n gând
De anii duşi, de-un stins cămin
Unde-ascultam zvonul lui lin. |
Those joyous hours are passed away;
And many a heart that then was gay
Within the tomb now darkly dwells,
And hears no more those evening bells. |
Ce fericiri au fost alt’dat’,
Ce bucurii, s-au spulberat;
Şi-atâţi zac azi în trist mormânt,
Fără s-audă zvonul sfânt. |
And so ’t will be when I am gone,—
That tuneful peal will still ring on;
While other bards shall walk these dells,
And sing your praise, sweet evening bells. |
Apoi nici eu n-o să mai fiu,
Dar dangătul va răsuna…
Alţi barzi, păşind în urma mea,
Te vor slăvi, clopot târziu. |

I bring fresh showers for the thirsting flowers,
From the seas and the streams;
I bear light shade for the leaves when laid
In their noonday dreams.
From my wings are shaken the dews that waken
The sweet buds every one,
When rocked to rest on their mother’s breast,
As she dances about the sun.
I wield the flail of the lashing hail,
And whiten the green plains under,
And then again I dissolve it in rain,
And laugh as I pass in thunder. |
Eu aduc stropi reci de ploaie de pe mări şi din pâraie
Florile ce-nsetoşează;
Eu adun umbrarul des pentru frunzele ce-şi ţes
Vis de ploaie la amiază.
De pe vălul meu ceresc spulber roua să trezesc,
Rând pe rând, boboci de floare
Când, la sânu-i, maica lor stă să-i legene uşor

Men of England, wherefore plough
For the lords who lay ye low?
Wherefore weave with toil and care
The rich robes your tyrants wear? |
Voi, englezi, de ce araţi
Pentru domnii îmbuibaţi?
De ce-i ţeseţi cu migală
Despotului strai de gală? |
