„Scotland’s Winter” de Edwin Muir

Now the ice lays its smooth claws on the sill,
The sun looks from the hill
Helmed in his winter casket,
And sweeps his arctic sword across the sky.
The water at the mill
Sounds more hoarse and dull.
The miller’s daughter walking by
With frozen fingers soldered to her basket
Seems to be knocking
Upon a hundred leagues of floor
With her light heels, and mocking
Percy and Douglas dead,
And Bruce on his burial bed,
Where he lies white as may
With wars and leprosy,
And all the kings before
This land was kingless,
And all the singers before
This land was songless,
This land that with its dead and living waits the Judgement Day.
But they, the powerless dead,
Listening can hear no more
Than a hard tapping on the floor
A little overhead
Of common heels that do not know
Whence they come or where they go
And are content
With their poor frozen life and shallow banishment.
De unde vin sau încotro se duc;
Şi-s mulţumiţi
De îngheţata viaţă
Şi de surghiunul neadânc.

„Silver” de Walter de la Mare

Slowly, silently, now the moon
Walks the night in her silver shoon;
This way, and that, she peers, and sees
Silver fruit upon silver trees;
One by one the casements catch
Her beams beneath the silvery thatch;
Couched in his kennel, like a log,
With paws of silver sleeps the dog;
From their shadowy cote the white breasts peep
Of doves in silver feathered sleep
A harvest mouse goes scampering by,
With silver claws, and silver eye;
And moveless fish in the water gleam,
By silver reeds in a silver stream.
Agale, mut, în noaptea-ntunecată
Plutește luna-n toga-i argintată,

„Strangeness of Heart” de Siegfried Sassoon

When I have lost the power to feel the pang
Which first I felt in childhood when I woke
And heard the unheeding garden bird who sang
Strangeness of heart for me while morning broke;
Or when in latening twilight sure with spring,
Pausing on homeward paths along the wood,
No sadness thrills my thought while thrushes sing,
And I’m no more the listening child who stood
So many sunsets past and could not say
What wandering voices called from far away:
When I have lost those simple spells that stirred
My being with an untranslated song,
Let me go home for ever; I shall have heard
Death; I shall know that I have lived too long.
Când nu voi mai putea simți fiorul
Ce mă trecea, copil fiind, în zori
De câte ori cânta, rostindu-și dorul,
Vreo pasăre-n grădină, printre flori, –
Sau când, în vreun amurg de primăvară,
Mergând prin crâng, spre casă, pe poteci,
Nu voi mai sta, cu inima amară,
S-ascult cum cântă sturzii și când, deci,
Nu voi mai fi copilul uluit
Ce nu știa să spună-al cui e glasul
Ce cheamă de departe,-n asfințit,
Înseamnă că-i aproape bun-rămasul:
Pierzând aceste simple vrăji, voi ști
Că am trăit prea mult, și pot muri.

„Autumn” de Walter de la Mare

There is a wind where the rose was,
Cold rain where sweet grass was,
And clouds like sheep
Stream o’er the steep
Grey skies where the lark was.
E un vânt unde floare a fost,
Ploi reci unde iarbă a fost,
Și norii în turmă,
Se-alungă din urmă,
Cer negru unde pasăre a fost.
Nought warm where your hand was,
Nought gold where your hair was,
But phantom, forlorn,
Beneath the thorn,
Your ghost where your face was.
E gol unde pletele-au fost;
Și frig unde mâna ți-a fost;
Nălucă pustie,
Sub searbăda glie,
Strigoi unde chipul ți-a fost.
Cold wind where your voice was,
Tears, tears where my heart was,
And ever with me,
Child, ever with me,
Silence where hope was.
Zefir unde glasul ți-a fost,
Și plâns unde inima-a fost
De-a pururi cu mine,
Copilă, voi ține
Tăceri ce nădejde au fost.

„Wagner” de Rupert Brooke

Creeps in half wanton, half asleep,
One with a fat wide hairless face.
He likes love-music that is cheap;
Likes women in a crowded place;
And wants to hear the noise they’re making.
Destul de vesel, dar cam adormit,
Și-ocupă locul unul: față lată, spână;
De muzica dulceagă e vrăjit
Și de cucoane strânse ca la stână:
I-încântă-auzul zarva ce o fac.
His heavy eyelids droop half-over,
Great pouches swing beneath his eyes.
He listens, thinks himself the lover,
Heaves from his stomach wheezy sighs;
He likes to feel his heart’s a-breaking.
Pleoapele-i de plumb ’s-aproape-nchise
Și pungile sub ochi i-atârnă grele;
Ascultă, și un crai se vede-n vise;
Suspine-i șuieră dintre bretele:
Tot ce-i sfâșietor și îi e pe plac.
The music swells. His gross legs quiver.
His little lips are bright with slime.
The music swells. The women shiver.
And all the while, in perfect time,
His pendulous stomach hangs a-shaking.
Crescendo. În picioarele-i greoaie –
Fiori; pe buze, un surâs slinos, abject.
Crescendo iar. Fierb doamnele, se-nfoaie,
Dar între timp el bate-un tact perfect:
Își leagănă o burtă cât un sac.
Rupert Brooke traducere de Andrei Bantaș
