The world’s a stage. The trifling entrance fee
Is paid (by proxy) to the registrar.
The Orchestra is very loud and free
But plays no music in particular.
They do not print a programme, that I know.
The cast is large. There isn’t any plot.
The acting of the piece is far below
The very worst of modernistic rot.
The only part about it I enjoy
Is what was called in English the Foyay.
There will I stand apart awhile and toy
With thought, and set my cigarette alight;
And then — without returning to the play —
On with my coat and out into the night. |
Lumea-i o scenă.
Realizarea-i chiar mai nebuloasă

Let us go hence: the night is now at hand;
The day is overworn, the birds all flown;
And we have reaped the crops the gods have sown;
Despair and death; deep darkness o’er the land,
Broods like an owl; we cannot understand
Laughter or tears, for we have only known
Surpassing vanity: vain things alone
Have driven our perverse and aimless band. |
Hai să plecăm; vezi, noaptea grea se lasă;
Ziua s-a stins; o pasăre nu zboară…
Iar noi am strâns ce zeii semănară;
Morți… disperări…; clocește bezna deasă
Precum un ciuf; nu știm, nu ne mai pasă
De râs ori plâns, căci ni se revelară
Doar vaste vanități; seci lucruri doară
Mânară turma noastră ticăloasă. |
Let us go hence, somewhither strange and cold,
To Hollow Lands where just men and unjust
Find end of labour, where’s rest for the old,
Freedom to all from love and fear and lust.
Twine our torn hands! O pray the earth enfold
Our life-sick hearts and turn them into dust. |
Hai să plecăm spre Vămile ciudate
Unde scutiți cei drepți și răii sunt
De spaime, de iubiri, de-a se mai zbate,
Și-i tihnă pentru gârbovi… Implorând
Ca inimile noastre, dezgustate
De viață, să se facă iar pământ. |

The burden of fair women. Vain delight,
And love self-slain in some sweet shameful way,
And sorrowful old age that comes by night
As a thief comes that has no heart by day,
And change that finds fair cheeks and leaves them grey,
And weariness that keeps awake for hire,
And grief that says what pleasure used to say;
This is the end of every man’s desire. |
Povara frumuseţii. Joc obscur,
Iubire sinucisă fără rost
Şi vârstă sosind noaptea ca un fur
Ce-n timpul zilei bestie a fost;
Schimbare-a dimineţii în apus,
Urtât ce, treaz, se-aşteaptă-nchiriat
Şi chin spunând ce poftele-au mai spus:
Aşa sfârşesc dorinţele unui bărbat. |

Be seated, pray. ” A grave appeal”?
The sufferers by the war, of course;
Ah, what a sight for us who feel, —
This monstrous melodrame of Force!
We, Sir, we connoisseurs, should know,
On whom its heaviest burden falls;
Collections shattered at a blow,
Museums turned to hospitals! |
Luaţi loc, vă rog. „Un apel grav?”
Alţi invalizi, de bună seamă.
Cumplită-a Forţei melodramă!
Noi, Sir, cunoscătorii, ştim
Asupra cui apasă greul –
Colecţia s-a dus de râpă,
Infirmerie e muzeul! |
