„Izvor” de Eugen Jebeleanu

Lacrimile mele curg dintr-un izvor
ascuns adânc în nemişcarea ta.
Ele se rostogolesc, nu se nimără,
nu se privesc unele pe altele.
The tears welling up in my eyes
spring from the rock of your silence.
They burst forth, beyound count:
they never face each other.
Desculţe şi oarbe se ciocnesc între ele,
dar, uneori, încremenesc
iscând un lumini; când tu apari
şi vii spre mine surâzând prin lacrimi.
Nakedly, blindly, they clash:
and yet at times they halt
in some sort of clearing
as you move closer, smiling through the tears.

„Rondelul meu” de Alexandru Macedonski

Când am fost ură am fost mare,
Dar, astăzi, cu desăvârşire
Sunt mare, că mă simt iubire,
Sunt mare, căci mă simt uitare.
When I was hatred I was great,
While I, today, all things above,
Am great – great for I feel I’m love,
Great for with Lethe I share the fate.
Eşti mare când n-ai îndurare,
Dar te ridici mai sus de fire
Când ţi-este inima iubire,
Când ţi-este sufletul iertare.
Yes, mercilessness makes you great,
But high you fly, high like a dove
When nothing is your heart but love,
When mercy does your soul elate.
Ştiu: toate sunt o-ndurerare,
Prin viaţă trecem în neştire,
Dar mângâierea e-n iubire,
De-ar fi restriştea cât de mare,
Şi înălţarea e-n iertare.
I know: all things bear sorrow’s weight,
Through life in ignorance we rove,
But every solace is in love,
And even if distress be great,
Elation is: forgive, forget.

„Rondelul rozelor ce mor” de Alexandru Macedonski

E vremea rozelor ce mor,
Mor în grădini, şi mor şi-n mine –
Ş-au fost atât de viaţă pline,
Şi azi se sting aşa uşor.
It is the time when roses die,
They die in gardens, and in me –
They were so full of life and glee,
And now they droop with a faint sigh.
În tot, se simte un fior.
O jale e în orişicine.
E vremea rozelor ce mor –
Mor în grădini, şi mor şi-n mine.
Through everything cold shivers fly.
Despondency’s in all we see.
It is the time when roses die –
They die in gardens, and in me.
Pe sub amurgu-ntristător,
Curg vălmăşaguri de suspine,
Şi-n marea noapte care vine
Duioase-şi pleacă fruntea lor –
E vremea rozelor ce mor.
Beneath the dismal twilight sky
There eddies many a faint sigh;
And towards the long night to be
They gently bend their heads so shy –
It is the time when roses die.

„Cimitirul roman” de Lucian Blaga

Huliţi au fost romanii
de unii învăţaţi din vremi mai nouă
că metafizică n-ar fi creat
ca alte glorioase seminţii,
doar apeducte, colisee, foruri, drumuri,
eterna urbe, castre şi troiane de hotar.
Huliţi au fost romanii
că numai case-ar fi clădit, cu atrii
primind de sus lumina
şi-avertisment ţinând pe praguri: cave canem.
Abused have been the Romans
by certain scholars of more recent times
for not creating metaphysics
like other glorious nations,
but only aqueducts, roads, colosseums, forums,
the eternal city, castra, border, earthwork.
Abused have been the Romans
for building only houses, with atria
receiving daylight from above,
and with the warning on their doorsills: cave canem.

„Autoportret” de Lucian Blaga

Lucian Blaga e mut ca o lebădă.
În patria sa
zăpada făpturii ţine loc de cuvânt.
Sufletul lui e în căutare,
în mută, seculară căutare,
de totdeauna,
şi până la cele din urmă hotare.
El caută apa din care bea curcubeul.
El caută apa
din care curcubeul
îşi bea frumuseţea şi nefiinţa.
Lucian Blaga is as mute as a swan.
In his homeland
a creature’s snow stands for the word.
His spirit is in quest
in age-old mute quest
since all times
and up to the ultimate bounds, without rest.
He is in quest of the water of which the rainbow drinks.
He is in quest of the water
of which the rainbow
drinks its beauty and non-being.

„Ţara” de Nichita Stănescu

Ce am eu mai curat în mine, somnul
străbătut de vise vechi,
ce ai tu mai curat în tine, lemnul
arbore cu verzi urechi,
What I have purest in me: sleep
traversed by old dreams,
what you have purest in you: timber
tree with green ears.
Ce am eu mai ascuns în mine,
sângele mişcând un gând,
ce ai tu mai curat în tine,
amirosul de pământ,
What I have most hidden in me:
blood stirring a thought;
what you have purest in you:
the odour in deep earth inwrought.
Oh, şi ce am sfânt pe lume,
dulcele pământ al tău, de vis
şi tot ce-i în tine nume
de caisă din cais –
And oh, what I have sacred, pure flame:
your sweet earth, dreamlike and free,
and all that is in you the name
of fruit from an apricot-tree.
Totul, tot ce este adevăr
stă-n îmbrăţişarea noastră,
ramură cu flori de măr
şi c-o pasăre măiastră.
All, all that stands for veracity
in your embrace is averred,
blossoming bough of an apple-tree
with a wonder bird.
