„The White Goddess” de Robert Graves

All saints revile her, and all sober men
Ruled by the God Apollo’s golden mean –
In scorn of which we sailed to find her
In distant regions likeliest to hold her
Whom we desired above all things to know,
Sister of the mirage and echo.
N-o rabdă sfinții, nici acei ce vor să ție
A lui Apolo cale mijlocie –
Așa că am plecat să-i dăm de rost,
La capetele lumii de-ar fi fost:
Mirajul șoaptelor ne atrăgea
Un unic țel în viață era ea.
It was a virtue not to stay,
To go our headstrong and heroic way
Seeking her out at the volcano’s head,
Among pack ice, or where the track had faded
Beyond the cavern of the seven sleepers:
Whose broad high brow was white as any leper’s,
Whose eyes were blue, with rowan-berry lips,
With hair curled honey-coloured to white hips.
N-am pregetat; din câte sunt sub cer
Am cercetat de-a rând orice ungher
Între Vulcani aprinși și ghețuri moarte
Pe drumuri ce se-afundă mai departe
De grota celor șapte somnoroși.
Ca de ivoriu fruntea ei era.
Ochi de safir, buze – scorușe roșii,
Păr de culoarea mierii o-ncingea.
The sap of Spring in the young wood a-stir
Will celebrate with green the Mother,
And every song-bird shout awhile for her;
But we are gifted, even in November
Rawest of seasons, with so huge a sense
Of her nakedly worn magnificence
We forget cruelty and past betrayal,
Heedless of where the next bright bolt may fall.
Cu seva lunii mai, pomi din zăvoi
Pe Muma-Munte o sărbătoresc
Și-un timp o cântă neamul păsăresc;
Ci noi, chiar dacă gerul e în toi,
O preamărim atunci când își prăvale
Asupra noastră măreția goală,
Uitând cruzimea ei de altcândva
Și trăsnetele cari voi mai cădea.

„Silver” de Walter de la Mare

Slowly, silently, now the moon
Walks the night in her silver shoon;
This way, and that, she peers, and sees
Silver fruit upon silver trees;
One by one the casements catch
Her beams beneath the silvery thatch;
Couched in his kennel, like a log,
With paws of silver sleeps the dog;
From their shadowy cote the white breasts peep
Of doves in silver feathered sleep
A harvest mouse goes scampering by,
With silver claws, and silver eye;
And moveless fish in the water gleam,
By silver reeds in a silver stream.
Agale, mut, în noaptea-ntunecată
Plutește luna-n toga-i argintată,

„Warning to Children” de Robert Graves

Children, if you dare to think
Of the greatness, rareness, muchness
Fewness of this precious only
Endless world in which you say
You live, you think of things like this:
Blocks of slate enclosing dappled
Red and green, enclosing tawny
Yellow nets, enclosing white
And black acres of dominoes,
Where a neat brown paper parcel
Tempts you to untie the string.
In the parcel a small island,
On the island a large tree,
On the tree a husky fruit.
Strip the husk and pare the rind off:
In the kernel you will see
Blocks of slate enclosed by dappled
Red and green, enclosed by tawny
Yellow nets, enclosed by white
And black acres of dominoes,
Where the same brown paper parcel –
Children, leave the string alone!
For who dares undo the parcel
Finds himself at once inside it,
On the island, in the fruit,
Blocks of slate about his head,
Finds himself enclosed by dappled
Green and red, enclosed by yellow
Tawny nets, enclosed by black
And white acres of dominoes,
With the same brown paper parcel
Still untied upon his knee.
And, if he then should dare to think
Of the fewness, muchness, rareness,
Greatness of this endless only
Precious world in which he says
he lives – he then unties the string.
Hei, copii, de vreți să știți
De mărimea și micimea,
Raritatea, sărăcia
Astei lumi în care ziceți
Că trăiți, să țineți minte:
Plăci de lut cuprind bălțat
Roș-verzui cuprinde plase
Brune ce cuprind alb-negre
Regiuni de dominouri,
Unde un pachet vă-ndeamnă
Să-i desfaceți șnurulețul.
În pachet – o insuliță,
Și pe ea un pom vânjos;
Sus pe pom – un fruct uscat.
Rupeți coaja, scoateți miezul,
Și la mijloc veți vedea:
Plăci cuprinse în bălțat
Roș-verzui cuprins în plase
Brune se cuprind în multe
Albe-negre dominouri,
Unde-același nou pachet…
Nu, copii, nu trageți șnurul!
Căci de îndrăzniți să-l trageți,
Vă treziți în centrul lui,
Drept pe insulă, în fruct,
Plăci de lut pe cap cuprind
Roș-verzui cuprinde plase
Brune ce cuprind alb-negre,
Regiuni de dominouri,
Dar același nou pachet,
Tot închis stă pe genunchi.
Și atunci de-ați vrea să știți,
De mărimea și micimea,
Raritatea, sărăcia
Astei lumi în care ziceți
Că trăiți – hai, trageți șnurul!

„Self-Pity” de D.H. Lawrence

I never saw a wild thing
sorry for itself.
A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough
without ever having felt sorry for itself.
Nu mi-a fost dat să văd cândva o vietate
Care să-și plângă ei de milă.
O pasăre-nghețată cade moartă din copac,
Și n-a simțit nicicând păreri de rău.
