„Kangaroo” de D. H. Lawrence

Delicate mother Kangaroo
Sitting up there rabbit-wise, but huge, plump-weighted,
And lifting her beautiful slender face, oh! so much more
gently and finely lined than a rabbit’s, or than a hare’s,
Lifting her face to nibble at a round white peppermint drop
which she loves, sensitive mother Kangaroo.
Spre-a roade-o acadea ce-i place, simțitoarea mamă cangur.
Her sensitive, long, pure-bred face.
Her full antipodal eyes, so dark,
So big and quiet and remote, having watched so many
empty dawns in silent Australia.
Un chip prelung, sensibil și pur-sânge.
Ochi mari, antipodali și negri,
Tăcuți și-ndepărtați fiindcă au vegheat
Atâția zori pustii în Australia tăcută.
Her little loose hands, and drooping Victorian shoulders.
And then her great weight below the waist, her vast pale belly,
With a thin young yellow little paw hanging out, and
straggle of a long thin ear, like ribbon,
Like a funny trimming to the middle of her belly, thin
little dangle of an immature paw, and one thin ear.
Cu mâinile ei mici și strâmbe,
Cu umerii căzuți în stil victorian.
Apoi povara de sub mijloc, pântecul enorm cu-acea
Lăbuță galbenă ieșită în afară,
Urechi subțiri și lungi ca niște panglici,
Hazlii podoabe pentru pântec,
Ureche-ciucure și labă-franj.
Her belly, her big haunches
And, in addition, the great muscular python-stretch of her tail.
Un pântec mare, coapse mari
Și-o coadă mare, mușchiuloasă, de piton.
There, she shan’t have any more peppermint drops.
So she wistfully, sensitively sniffs the air, and then turns,
goes off in slow sad leaps
On the long flat skis of her legs,
Steered and propelled by that steel-strong snake of a tail.
I-ajung atâtea acadele mentolate.
Miroase pofticios, adulmecă, se-ntoarce
Și pleacă-n salturi triste și încete
Peste schiurile lungi și plate,
Și coada ei șerpească de oțel
O-mpinge și-o cârmește.
Stops again, half turns, inquisitive to look back.
While something stirs quickly in her belly, and a lean little
face comes out, as from a window,
Peaked and a bit dismayed,
Only to disappear again quickly away from the sight of the
world, to snuggle down in the warmth,
Leaving the trail of a different paw hanging out.
Stă iar, privește curioasă îndărăt.
Iar între timp ceva zvâcnește-n pântecele ei.
Ca dintr-un geam răsare-un chip firav,
Cam ofilit, cam speriat,
Still she watches with eternal, cocked wistfulness!
How full her eyes are, like the full, fathomless, shining
eyes of an Australian black-boy
Who has been lost so many centuries on the margins of existence!
She watches with insatiable wistfulness.
Untold centuries of watching for something to come,
For a new signal from life, in that silent lost land of the South.
Where nothing bites but insects and snakes and the sun, small life.
Where no bull roared, no cow ever lowed, no stag cried,
no leopard screeched, no lion coughed, no dog barked,
But all was silent save for parrots occasionally, in the haunted blue bush.
Ca mânjii nestruniți, sau cerbii pe ponor, sau iepurii cu coada retezată;
Altfel, șarjează orizontul pe orizontală
Ca taurii, bizonii sau mistreții.
Doar șoarecii, sobolii, șobolanii, castorii și urșii
Se sprijin de buricul globului cu burta
Sau broaștele, sărind, vor centru-i să-l găsească.
Wistfully watching, with wonderful liquid eyes.
And all her weight, all her blood, dropping sackwise down
towards the earth’s centre,
And the live little-one taking in its paw at the door of her belly.

Creeps in half wanton, half asleep,
One with a fat wide hairless face.
He likes love-music that is cheap;
Likes women in a crowded place;
And wants to hear the noise they’re making.
Destul de vesel, dar cam adormit,
Și-ocupă locul unul: față lată, spână;
De muzica dulceagă e vrăjit
Și de cucoane strânse ca la stână:
I-încântă-auzul zarva ce o fac.
His heavy eyelids droop half-over,
Great pouches swing beneath his eyes.
He listens, thinks himself the lover,
Heaves from his stomach wheezy sighs;
He likes to feel his heart’s a-breaking.
Pleoapele-i de plumb ’s-aproape-nchise
Și pungile sub ochi i-atârnă grele;
Ascultă, și un crai se vede-n vise;
Suspine-i șuieră dintre bretele:
Tot ce-i sfâșietor și îi e pe plac.
The music swells. His gross legs quiver.
His little lips are bright with slime.
The music swells. The women shiver.
And all the while, in perfect time,
His pendulous stomach hangs a-shaking.
Crescendo. În picioarele-i greoaie –
Fiori; pe buze, un surâs slinos, abject.
Crescendo iar. Fierb doamnele, se-nfoaie,
Dar între timp el bate-un tact perfect:
Își leagănă o burtă cât un sac.

„The Mosquito Knows” de D.H. Lawrence

The mosquito knows full well, small as he is
he’s a beast of prey.
but after all
he only takes his bellyful,
he doesn’t put my blood in the bank.
Mărunt cum e, țânțarul multe prea bine știe
Că-i animal de pradă.
Dar dacă stai să te gândești
El pântecele doar și-l burdușește
Dar sângele-mi la bancă nu-l depune.

„Glory” de Edward Thomas

The glory of the beauty of the morning, –
The cuckoo crying over the untouched dew;
The blackbird that has found it, and the dove
That tempts me on to something sweeter than love;
White clouds ranged even and fair as new-mown hay;
The heat, the stir, the sublime vacancy
Of sky and meadow and forest and my own heart: –
The glory invites me, yet it leaves me scorning
All I can ever do, all I can be,
Beside the lovely of motion, shape, and hue,
The happiness I fancy fit to dwell
In beauty’s presence. Shall I now this day
Begin to seek as far as heaven, as hell,
Wisdom or strength to match this beauty, start
And tread the pale dust pitted with small dark drops,
In hope to find whatever it is I seek,
Hearkening to short-lived happy-seeming things
That we know naught of, in the hazel copse?
Or must I be content with discontent
As larks and swallows are perhaps with wings?
And shall I ask at the day’s end once more
What beauty is, and what I can have meant
By happiness? And shall I let all go,
Glad, weary, or both? Or shall I perhaps know
That I was happy oft and oft before,
Awhile forgetting how I am fast pent,
How dreary-swift, with naught to travel to,
Is Time? I cannot bite the day to the core.
Bogatul strai al dimineții, cucul
Ce cântă pentru rouă cât timp încă
Nu a găsit-o mierla, porumbelul
Care cunoaște-un simțământ mai gingaș
Ca dragostea; nori albi grupați simetric,
Îmbietori ca fânul nou-cosit;
