I even I, am he who knoweth the roads
Through the sky, and the wind thereof is my body. |
I have beheld the Lady of Life,
I, even I, who fly with the swallows. |
Green and gray is her raiment,
Trailing along the wind. |
Verde şi cenuşiu îi e straiul
Dus de vânt. |
I, even I, am he who knoweth the roads
Through the sky, and the wind thereof is my body. |
Manus animam pinxit,
My pen is in my hand |
Manus animam pinxit,
Condeiul meu în mână-l am |
To write the acceptable word. . . .
My mouth to chant the pure singing! |
Să scriu cuvântul nimerit…
Iar glasu-mi nalţe cuvântul neprihanei! |
Who hath the mouth to receive it,
The song of the Lotus of Kumi? |
Cine are gură să se-adape,
Din doina Lotusului de la Kumi? |
I, even I, am he who knoweth the roads
Through the sky, and the wind thereof is my body. |
I am flame that riseth in the sun,
I, even I, who fly with the swallows. |
The moon is upon my forehead,
The winds are under my lips. |
Luna-mi ninge pe frunte
Zefirul – pe buze. |
The moon is a great pearl in the waters of sapphire,
Cool to my fingers the flowing waters. |
I, even I, am he who knoweth the roads
Through the sky, and the wind thereof is my body. |

Wild Nights — Wild Nights!
Were I with thee
Wild Nights should be
Our luxury! |
Sălbatice nopţi – Sălbatice nopţi!
Cu tine de-aş fi
Sălbaticele Nopţi
Luxuria noastră ar fi! |
Futile — the Winds —
To a Heart in port —
Done with the Compass —
Done with the Chart! |
Zadarnice – Vânturile –
Unei inimi în port ancorată
Nu-i pasă de Busolă –
Nu-i pasă de Hartă! |
Rowing in Eden —
Ah, the Sea!
Might I but moor — Tonight —
In Thee! |
Vâslind în Eden –
Ah, Mare! – de-aş putea
La Noapte – să ancorez
În unda Ta |

Te miri că nu scot gheara să-mi sfâşii bârfitorii?
Unde-ai văzut tu leul vânând gândaci sau poame?
Poetul sare lacom asupra-naltei glorii,
Cu-mbătătoarea-i carne s-aline sacra foame.
Şi lesnicioasă pradă-ţi cad astăzi la genunchi;
You wonder that my slanderers I don’t claw and pull apart?
Do lions ever go hunting bugs or picking berries?
Poets leap greedily to seize the highest laurels,
To sooth with fame’s zesty flesh their sacred hunger.
I too chased glory haunting your world’s wastes
And vied for her with tigers and with snakes,
Running it down into traps and disasters,
But within reach of it, beloved, your crossed my way,
Your eyes like smiling steel you aimed at me,
Proving an easy prey, now before you I kneel.
Come, tear my heart and render it immortal,
Into my very bowels let creep sweet cruelty.
For to my verses I give a new destiny:
Their noble blood your meat will be. |

Twelve o’clock.
Along the reaches of the street
Held in a lunar synthesis,
Whispering lunar incantations
Dissolve the floors of memory
And all its clear relations,
Its divisions and precisions,
Every street lamp that I pass
Beats like a fatalistic drum,
And through the spaces of the dark
Midnight shakes the memory
As a madman shakes a dead geranium. |

Man is his own star; and the soul that can
Render an honest and a perfect man,
Commands all light, all influence, all fate;
Nothing to him falls early or too late.
Our acts our angels are, or good or ill,
Our fatal shadows that walk by us still. |
Va porunci luminii, influenţei, sorţii;
Nimic nu-i pentru el prea grabnic sau târziu
Faptele ne sunt îngeri, buni sau răi,
Fatale umbre care ne urmează. |

– Codrule, codruţule,
Ce mai faci, drăguţule,
Că de când nu ne-am văzut
Multă vreme au trecut
Şi de când m-am depărtat,
Multă lume am îmblat. |
„Forest, trusted friend and true,
Forest dear, how do you do?
Since the day i saw you last
Many, many years have passed
And though you still steadfast stand
I have traveled many a land.” |
