15 sept.
Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore–
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
„‘Tis some visiter,” I muttered, „tapping at my chamber door–
Only this and nothing more.” |
,,E vreun trecător – gândit-am – şi-a bătut întâmplător.
Doar atât, un trecător.” |

Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower,
We will grieve not, rather find
Strength in what remains behind. |
Deşi nimic nu poate aduce înapoi ora
splendorii în iarbă, a gloriei în floare,
nu vom plânge, ci vom găsi
putere în ce-a rămas în urmă. |

Cu mâne zilele-ţi adaogi,
Cu ieri viaţa ta o scazi
Şi ai cu toate astea-n faţă
De-a pururi ziua cea de azi. |
With life’s tomorrow time you grasp,
Its yesterdays you fling away,
And still, in spite of all remains
Its long eternity, today. |
Când unul trece, altul vine
În astă lume a-l urma,
Precum când soarele apune
El şi răsare undeva. |
When one thing goes, another comes
In this wide world by heaven borne;
And when the sun is setting here
‘Tis somewhere else just breaking dawn. |
Se pare cum că alte valuri
Cobor mereu pe-acelaşi vad,
Se pare cum că-i altă toamnă,
Ci-n veci aceleaşi frunze cad. |
It seems somehow that other waves
Are rolling down the same old stream,
And somehow, tough the autumns change,
‘Tis but the same leaves fall it seem. |
Naintea nopţii noastre îmblă
Crăiasa dulcii dimineţi;
Chiar moartea însăşi e-o părere
Şi un visternic de vieţi. |
Before our night does ever ride
The queen of mornings rosy skies;
While even death is but a guess,
Of life a notion, a surmise. |
Din orice clipă trecătoare
Ăst adevăr îl înţeleg,
Că sprijină vecia-ntreagă
Şi-nvârte universu-ntreg. |
Of every moment that goes by
One fact each mortal creature knows;
The universe is poised in time
And whirling round for ever goes. |
De-aceea zboare anu-acesta
Şi se cufunde în trecut,
Tu ai ş-acum comoara-ntreagă
Ce-n suflet pururi ai avut. |
Still, though this year will fly away
And soon but to the bygone add,
Within your soul you ever hold
Each thing of worth you ever had. |
Cu mâne zilele-ţi adaogi,
Cu ieri viaţa ta o scazi,
Având cu toate astea-n faţă
De-a purure ziua cea de azi. |
With life’s tomorrow time you grasp,
Its yesterday you fling away,
And still, in spite of all remains
Its long eternity, today. |
Priveliştile sclipitoare,
Ce-n repezi şiruri se diştern,
Repaosă nestrămutate
Sub raza gândului etern. |
A radiant and brilliant view,
In many rapid glimpses caught,
Of infinite, unending calm,
Bathed in the rays of timeless thought. |

Flow down, cold rivulet, to the sea,
Thy tribute wave deliver:
No more by thee my steps shall be,
For ever and for ever. |
Să curgi, pârâule, spre mare,
Cu-al tău tribut de ape reci:
Că n-oi mai fi pe-a ta cărare
În veci de veci. |
Flow, softly flow, by lawn and lea,
A rivulet then a river:
No where by thee my steps shall be,
For ever and for ever. |
Să curgi încet înspre câmpii,
Şi-ncet în râu să te petreci:
Că eu pe-aci n-oi mai păşi
În veci de veci. |
But here will sigh thine alder tree,
And here thine aspen shiver;
And here by thee will hum the bee,
For ever and for ever. |
Vor suspina în vânt arinii
Şi plopii tristelor poteci;
Suna-va zumzetul albinii
În veci de veci. |
A thousand suns will stream on thee,
A thousand moons will quiver;
But not by thee my steps shall be,
For ever and for ever. |
Şi zeci de sori vor străluci
Şi lune alte zeci;
Ci eu pe-aci n-oi mai păşi
În veci de veci. |

The petals fall in the fountain,
the orange-coloured rose-leaves,
Their ochre clings to the stone. |
Petalele cad în fântână,
portocalii petale de trandafiri,
Culoarea lor se-nchearbă de piatră. |

A fost odată ca-n poveşti,
A fost ca niciodată,
Din rude mari împărăteşti,
O prea frumoasă fată. |
Once on a time, as poets sing
High tales with fancy laden,
Born of a very noble king
There lived a wondrous maiden. |
