The thirstu earth soaks up the rain,
And drinks and gapes for drink again;
The plants suck in the earth, and are
With constant drinking fresh and fair;
The sea itself (which one would think
Should have but little need of drink)
Drinks twice ten thousand rivers up,
So fill’d that they o’erflow the cup.
The busy Sun (and one would guess
By ’s drunken fiery face no less)
Drinks up the sea, and when he’s done,
The Moon and Stars drink up the Sun:
They drink and dance by their own light,
They drink and revel all the night:
Nothing in Nature’s sober found,
But an eternal health goes round.
Fill up the bowl, then, fill it high,
Fill all the glasses there—for why
Should every creature drink but I?
Why, man of morals, tell me why? |
Din ploi pământul sec se-adapă
Şi bea, şi iar cerşeşte apă;
Sorb apă pomii, din pământ,
Şi-s verzi şi-s falnici pururi bând;
(Măcar că unii cred că n-ar
Fi prea setoasă) Marea chiar
Bea râuri zeci de mii – şi doară
Stacana-i dă pe dinafară.
Focosul Soare (şi-ar tot crede
Acel ce-obrazu-aprins i-l vede
Că nu prea suferă de sete)
Bea Marea, iar când e s-apună,
Şi stele beau din el, şi Lună:
Îşi sug lumina lor săracă
Şi-ntreaga noapte beau şijoacă…
Nimic nu-i sobru şi uscat
În largul Firii – necurmat
Auzi prin jur „noroc, vecine!”
Deci umple-mi cupa, umple pline
Şi-aceste căni… De ce oricine
Să bea e slobod, iar eu nu?
Zi, moralistule, zi-mi tu! |

Speech after long silence; it is right,
All other lovers being estranged or dead,
Unfriendly lamplight hid under its shade,
The curtains drawn upon unfriendly night,
That we descant and yet again descant
Upon the supreme theme of Art and Song:
Bodily decrepitude is wisdom; young
We loved each other and were ignorant. |
A vorbi dup-o lungă tăcere, e bine.

îndulcindu-i pustietatea…
Un fir de iarbă îmi numără anotimpurile,
unul câte unul,
patru câte patru,
şi aşteaptă liniştit să mă fac
un fir de iarbă,
un fir de iarbă… |
A blade of grass,
a curved blade of grass,
a blade of grass curved like an eyelash,
a blade of grass travels the earth
sweetening its wilderness,
a blade of grass counts my seasons,
one by one,
four by four,
and peacefully waits for me
to become
a blade of grass,
a blade of grass – |

Poate că spre tine-ndreptasem acest gând
devenit cuvânt
Poate că spre tine-ndreptasem acest cuvânt
devenit sânge
Poate că spre tine-ndreptasem acest sânge
devenit făptură
Poate că spre tine-ndreptasem
această iubire şi ură
Poate că spre tine-ndreptasem
această nefiinţă
pe care tu ai primit-o
şi tăcând zâmbind şi privind
ai învăţat-o să tacă
(deci să strige)
să zâmbească
(deci să plângă)
să privească
(deci să uite)
poate că tu eşti viaţa ei
(de vreme ce-i eşti
moartea uitării). |
Perhaps it was towards you that I had directed this thoughts
that turned into a word
Perhaps it was towards you that I had directed this word
that turned into a blood
Perhaps it was towards you that I had directed this blood
turned into a creature
Perhaps it was towards you that I had directed
this love and hate
Perhaps it was towards you that I had directed
this non-being
which you accepted
and keeping silent smiling and watching
you taught it to keep silent
(that is to yell)
to smile
(that is to cry)
to watch
(that is to forget)
Perhaps you are its life
(since you are to it
the death of oblivion). |

Zburau…
El avea o aripă în stânga,
ea avea o aripă în dreapta,
ca un singur trup între două aripi
zburau…
Respirând între două aripi,
ea – plămânul lui drept,
el – plămânul ei stâng,
printr-un cer saturat de aur,
ca o lungă suveică de aur,
ca o cheie de aur descuind spaţii de aur,
zburau….
prin aur…
zburau…
prin aur…
zburau… |
Flying they were –
He had a wing on his left,
she had a wing on her right,
like one body between two wings
they were flying –
Flying they were –
Between their two wings breathing in
she – his right lung,
he – her left lung,
through a sky saturated with gold,
like a long golden shuttle,
like a golden key opening golden spaces,
they were flying –
through gold –
they were flying –
through gold –
they were flying – |

I used to be like the forest, the windmill, the silent
black unknown crosses at roadsides –
the horses’ shadows at night on lofty Moldavian hills
I favoured – and the faces of singular gods
buried in sand by the sea. How long is it since?
Many a rain must have been, many a blizzard,
many a wall and host must have perished, many a chain
must have fallen,
many an empire burned down, blown to the winds, gone to blazes
before I could say I began to be at long last like myself. |
