„O, rămâi” de Mihai Eminescu

„O, rămâi, rămâi la mine,
Te iubesc atât de mult!
Ale tale doruri toate
Numai eu ştiu să le-ascult;
„O remain, dear one, I love you,
Stay with me in my fair land,
For your dreamings and your longings
Only I can understand.

„The Rose” de William Butler Yeats

When you are old and gray and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;
Căruntă, picotind lângă cămin,
Ia cartea asta şi citind, visează
Privirea caldă, umedă şi trează
A ochiului cândva adânc, senin.
How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true;
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;
O, câţi, cu dragostea sau cu minciuna
Nu ţi-au iubit al frumuseţii har,
Dar unul numai sufletul hoinar
Şi chipul de dureri schimbat întruna.
And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.
Te pleacă peste jarul de surcele
Şi trist şopteşte c-a zburat iubirea
Mai sus de munţii fraţi cu nesfârşirea
Ca să-şi ascundă chipul printre stele.

„Sonet CXX” de William Shakespeare

That you were once unkind befriends me now,
And for that sorrow which I then did feel
Needs must I under my transgression bow,
Unless my nerves were brass or hammered steel.
Cruzimea ta de ieri azi mă-ndulceşte
şi-nseninează chipul meu durut,
greşala mă-ncovoaie dar, fireşte
n-am nervi de-aramă ori de fier bătut.
For if you were by my unkindness shaken
As I by yours, you’ve past a hell of time,
And I, a tyrant, have no leisure taken
To weigh how once I suffered in your crime.
De-ai fost rănit şi tu fără speranţă,
s-ar crede că ai fost o vreme-n iad
dar eu, tiranul, n-am pus în balanţă
cât am lovit şi cât am îndurat.
O that our night of woe might have remembered
My deepest sense how hard true sorrow hits,
And soon to you as you to me then tendered
The humble salve which wounded bosoms fits!
O, noaptea vechile dureri le-abate,
ce dâre-adânci în visul tău săpăm!
şi rănile ni le închide, toate,
cu tămăduitor, umil balsam.
But that your trespass now becomes a fee;
Mine ransoms yours, and yours must ransom me.
Nici vinile nu pot să ne despartă:
mă iartă vina ta şi-a mea te iartă…

„Despre starea de zbatere” de Nichita Stănescu

Ca şi cum un tăiş superior
mi-ar fi despărţit norii de vârfurile munţilor,
aşa se zbate trupul meu uriaş, decapitat,
lăsându-şi pe cer capul fugitiv.
As though the superior knife adge
had cut my clouds from the mountain tops
does my immense and headless body hurl itself about,
leaving its fugitive head in the sky.

„Pe lângă plopii fără soţ…” de Mihai Eminescu

Pe lângă plopii fără soţ
Adesea am trecut;
Mă cunoşteau vecinii toţi –
Tu nu m-ai cunoscut.
Down where the lonely poplars grow
How often have I erred;
My steps that all the neighbours know
You only have not heard.

„De dragoste” de Nichita Stănescu

Ea stă plictisită şi foarte frumoasă
părul ei negru este supărat
mâna ei luminoasă
demult m-a uitat, –
demult s-a uitat şi pe sine
cum atârnă pe ceafa scaunului.
She remains bored and very beautiful
her black hair is angry,
her bright hand
for ages now has forgotten me,-
for ages too has forgotten itself,
hanging as it has from the neck of a chair.
Eu mă înec în lumine
şi scrişnesc în crugul anului.
Îi arăt dinţii din gură,
dar ea ştie că eu nu râd,
dulcea luminii faptură
mie, pe mine mă înfăţişează pe când
ea stă plictisită şi foarte frumoasa
şi eu numai pentru ea trăiesc
în lumea fioroasă
de sub ceresc.
In the lights I drown myself,
set my jaws against the coursing of the year.
I reveal my teeth to her
but she understands this is no smile-
sweet, illuminated creature
she reveals myself to me while
she remains bored and very beautiful
and for her alone I live
in the appalling world
of this inferior heaven.
