My tongue-tied muse in manners holds her still,
While comments of your praise, richly compiled,
Reserve thy character with golden quill,
And precious phrase by all the muses filed.
|
E potolită muza mea, sărmana,
numai tălmacii slavei tale, iată,
în litere de aur moaie pana,
scriind cu toate muzele deodată. |
I think good thoughts, whilst other write good words,
And like unlettered clerk still cry „Amen”
To every hymn that able spirit affords
In polished form of well-refinèd pen. |
Gândesc de bine, altul gându-mi scrie,
copist cam necioplit, eu strig „Amin!”
la fiecare imn ce îl învie
condeiul cel de strălucire plin. |
Hearing you praised, I say „‘Tis so, ‘tis true”,
And to the most of praise add something more;
But that is in my thought, whose love to you,
Though words come hindmost, holds his rank before. |
Eşti lăudat şi strig „Aşa-i!” şi-n turmă
adaug încă laudei grozave
cuvinte (nerostite) spuse-n urmă,
dar primele urcând în epitafe… |
Then others for the breath of words respect,
Me for my dumb thoughts, speaking in effect. |
Iubeşte-n alţii vorbele-puzderii
şi-n mine numai vocile tăcerii… |

Ce singurătate
să nu înţelegi înţelesul
atunci când există înţeles. |
What loneliness
to find no meaning
when there is a meaning. |
Şi ce singurătate
să fii orb pe lumina zilei,-
şi surd, ce singurătate
in toiul cântecului. |
And what loneliness
to be blind in the full light of day, –
and deaf, what loneliness,
amidst the swelling of a song. |
Dar să nu-nţelegi
când nu există înţeles
şi să fii orb la miezul nopţii
şi surd când liniştea-i desăvârşită,-
o, singurătate a singurătăţii! |
But not to understand
when there is no meaning,
and to be blind in the middle of the night,
and deaf when silence is complete, –
oh, loneliness within loneliness! |

Not marble nor the gilded monuments
Of princes shall outlive this powerful rhyme,
But you shall shine more bright in these contents
Than unswept stone besmeared with sluttish time.
|
Nici marmuri princiare, nici morminte
n-or supravieţui acestor rime,
dar tu vei fi lumina ce aprinde
piatra murdară-a vremii anonime! |
When wasteful war shall statues overturn,
And broils root out the work of masonry,
Nor Mars his sword nor war’s quick fire shall burn
The living record of your memory. |
Război pustiitor va sparge statui,
va pârjoli a varului lucrare,
nici Marte cu-a lui spadă, nici gealatu-i,
războiul, nu te-or trece în uitare! |
‘Gainst death and all oblivious enmity
Shall you pace forth; your praise shall still find room
Even in the eyes of all posterity
That wear this world out to the ending doom. |
Potrivnic îndurărilor şi morţii,
găsi-vei slavei tale loc sub cer,
sub ochii celor care vin şi-ai sorţii
ce lumile le-mpinge către ger. |
So, till the judgement that yourself arise,
You live in this, and dwell in lovers’ eyes. |
Până să-ţi bată-a judecăţii oră
versul te-arată celor ce te-adoră! |

Vino-n codru la izvorul
Care tremură pe prund,
Unde prispa cea de brazde
Crengi plecate o ascund. |
Come now to the forest’s spring
Running wrinkling over the stones,
To where lush and grassy furrows
Hide away in curving boughs. |

When I do count the clock that tells the time,
And see the brave day sunk in hideous night;
When I behold the violet past prime,
And sable curls ensilvered o’er with white; |
Când văd cum timpul curge pe cadrane
şi ziua se afundă-n noaptea crudă,
când văd pălirea florii diafane
şi viţa albă-n negrul păr crescută; |
When lofty trees I see barren of leaves
Which erst from heat did canopy the herd,
And summer’s green all girded up in sheaves
Borne on the bier with white and bristly beard: |
când arborii sunt sterpi, cu foi bătrâne,
ei, baldachin al turmelor, în vară
şi verdele-nchingat în snopi rămâne
pe năsălie dus pe roţi de cară; |
Then of thy beauty do I question make
That thou among the wastes of time must go,
Since sweets and beauties do themselves forsake,
And die as fast as they see others grow; |
atunci la frumuseţea ta-mi duc gândul,
tu, care-o porţi prin vânt şi irosire
dulceţi şi farmec – timpul li-i mormântul –
alte minuni vin lumile să mire. |
And nothing ‘gainst time’s scythe can make defence
Save breed to brave him when he takes thee hence. |
nu-i pavăză când timpu-şi sună coasa,
doar dacă puii-ţi luminează casa… |

Noi ştim că unu ori unu fac unu,
dar un inorog ori o pară
nu ştim cât face.
Ştim că cinci fără patru fac unu,
dar un nor fără o corabie
nu ştim cât face.
Ştim, noi ştim că opt
împărţit la opt fac unu,
dar un munte împărţit la o capră
nu ştim cât face.
Ştim că unu plus unu fac doi,
dar eu şi cu tine,
nu Ştim, vai, nu ştim cât facem. |
We know that one times one is one,
but an unicorn times a pear
have no idea what it is.
We know that five minus four is one
but a cloud minus a sailboat
have no idea what it is.
We know that eight
divided by eight is one,
but a mountain divided by a goat
have no idea what it is.
We know that one plus one is two,
but me and you, oh,
we have no idea what it is. |
