How can I, that girl standing there,
My attention fix
On Roman or on Russian
Or on Spanish politics?
Yet here’s a travelled man that knows
What he talks about,
And there’s a politician
That has both read and thought,
And maybe what they say is true
Of war and war’s alarms,
But O that I were young again
And held her in my arms |
Cum oare să mai fiu atent
Privind această fată
La Roma, Spania, Rusia şi
Politica lor toată?
Dar colo-i un bărbat umblat,
El ştie ce vorbeşte,
Dincoace-un politician
Ce gândeşte şi citeşte,
Şi poate-aşa-i cum ne-alarmează,
Războaie prevestind –
Dar o! dac-aş fi tânăr iar,
Pe Ea la piept s-o prind! |

Pe gligul popalcos şi remilactic,
Un mândru papilandru tihirea,
La gligul cel flascos şi ciboractic
Apare zobildica ce-i zicea:
Papilandru, papilandru,
Stâlcul ţi-e atât de zbandru
Ca un tarniplac de ciondră
Strumpilat pe-un codobandru.
Gligul lin se popalca
Şi pe-un tarniplac de ciondră
Papilandru se zblanghea
Cu o zobildică blondă.

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date. |
Să te asemăn cu o zi de vară?
Frumuseţe şi balanţă ai mai mult.
În mai, ades furtuni muguri doboară,
Iar verile-s prea scurte, şi-n tumult. |
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm’d;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature’s changing course untrimm’d; |
De multe ori cerescul ochi prea arde,
Sau ceţuri auriul chip l-au şters,
Şi ce-i frumos din frumuseţe scade
Întâmplător, sau de-al naturii mers. |
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st;
Nor shall Death brag thou wander’st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st: |
Dar veşnica ta vară nu se duce,
Minunea chipului tu n-o să-ţi schimbi,
Nu te umbreşte moartea-ntre năluce
Când în eterne versuri creşti în timp. |
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. |
Cât mai respiră-n lume om, cât ochiu-nvaţă,
Trăi-va şi acest poem şi-ţi va da viaţă. |

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow. |
A cui pădure-i, cred a şti.
Dar casa lui nu e pe-aci,
N-o să mă vadă cum opresc
Privind la ninsele-i stihii. |
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year. |
Măruntu-mi cal s-o minuna
De ce am mas altundeva,
Nu-n sat, ci în păduri, spre lac,
În noaptea iernii cea mai grea. |
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake. |
Scutură frâie şi zăbală,
De ce-am oprit, din ce greşeală,
Şi altceva nu se aude
Decât, prin vânt, neaua domoală. |
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep. |
Plăcuţi sunt codrii, adânci, târzii,
Dar ce-am promis am a-mplini,
Şi mult de mers până a dormi,
Şi mult de mers până a dormi. |

El
un om singur. |
He offered me a leaf like a hand with fingers.
I offered him a hand like a leaf with teeth.
He offered me a branch like an arm.
I offered him my arm like a branch.
He tipped his trunk towards me
like a shoulder.
I tipped my shoulder to him
like a knotted trunk.
I could hear his sap quicken, beating
like blood.
He could hear my blood slacken like rising sap.
I passed through him.
He passed through me.
I remained a solitary tree.
He
a solitary man. |

Thy gift, thy tables, are within my brain
Full charactered with lasting memory,
Which shall above that idle rank remain
Beyond all date, even to eternity; |
Ţin filele de tine scrise-n minte
cu litere fierbinţi, de neuitare,
ce-s mai presus de slova mea cuminte
cu care-nfrunt eternităţi şi zare. |
Or at the least so long as brain and heart
Have faculty by nature to subsist,
Till each to razed oblivion yield his part
Of thee, thy record never can be missed. |
Sau le voi ţine-n inimă şi-n fapte,
ştiindu-le dăinuitoarea fire
nicicând pierdute-n risipiri şi noapte
şi pururi rămânând în amintire? |
That poor retention could not so much hold,
Nor need I tallies thy dear love to score;
Therefore to give them from me was I bold,
To trust those tables that receive thee more. |
Memoria-mi în prăfuita-i rază
doar scrisa ta întreagă o reţine
şi dragostea-n răboj nu şi-o crestează,
ea crede doar cuvântul de la tine. |
To keep an adjunct to remember thee
Were to import forgetfulness in me. |
Printr-un alt semn la mine să te-aduc?
Aş fi ca altul nimenea, uituc… |
