„Persistenţa flăcărilor” de Gellu Naum

Imaginile devorante ale lucrurilor viitoare
steaua aprinsă a unui incendiu
ceea ce am iubit ceea ce am sperat
ceea ce rămâne de cunoscut
The devouring images of things to come
the kindled star of a burning house
what we have loved what we have hoped for
what still remains to be known
Costumele acrobaţilor îşi păstrează vioiciunea
se reîncepe plimbarea somnambulică
pe frigul fragil între vis şi ape
între moarte şi veghe
între memorie şi asfixie
În această cameră atrăgătoare prin culoarea sicrielor
ţipătul tău se deschide ca o fereastră
The acrobats’ costumes preserve their gaudiness
the sleepwalking begins again
on a fragile tight rope between dream and waters
between death and vigil
between memory and choking
In this room attractive through the colours of its coffins
your shriek opens like a window
E timpul să cunoaştem femeia adormită
ea nu aşteaptă decât asta
ea priveşte cu un unic ochi languros
liliecii care îşi fac cuib în palmele noastre
It’s time we knew the sleeping woman
that’s the only thing she’s wainting for
she’s watching with one languid eye
the bats that make their nests in our palms

„O amoebă” de Marin Sorescu

„Ce mai faci?”
Într-o bună zi luna
A întrebat pământul.
„What are you at?”
One fine day
The Moon asked the Earth.
De milioane de ani
Îl tot vedea muncindu-se,
Mutând mările dintr-un continent
Într-altul,
Experimentând gheţuri şi vulcani
Şi stricând zilnic o grămadă de munţi.
„Ce mai faci?”
A repetat ea.
For millions of years
She had watched him toil,
Moving the seas from one continent
To another,
Experimenting upon ices and volcanoes
And daily wrecking whole heaps of mountains,
„What are you at?”
She repeated.
Pământul a răspuns obosit şi grav.
„O amoebă.”
The Earth answered tiredly and seriously.
„An amoeba”
Atunci luna a încruntat din sprâncene,
S-a făcut că înţelege
Misterul creaţiei şi al vieţii
Şi-a plecat mai departe gândindu-se:
„Fleacuri de-ale bărbaţilor”.
Then the Moon knitted her brows,
Pretended to understand
The mystery of creation and of life,
And sailed on thinking,
„Oh, men’s trifles.”

„Resumé” de Dorothy Parker

Razors pain you;
Rivers are damp;
Acids stain you;
And drugs cause cramp.
Guns aren’t lawful;
Nooses give;
Gas smells awful;
You might as well live.
Lamele produc dureri puternice
Şi râurile sunt murdare;
Acizii propun arsuri inestetice;
Pilulele dau crampe şi-s amare;
Armele nu sunt legale
Iar laţul e pentru trădare;
Gazul miroase prea din cale-afară;
Astfel, prefer să mai trăiesc o vară.

„Cuckoo Song”

Sumer is icumen in,
Lhude sing cuccu!
Groweth sed, and bloweth med,
And springth the wude nu—
Sing cuccu!
Vare este iar în toi,
Gureşi cântă cucii!
Cresc seminţe şi flori noi,
Scot vlăstari în crâng butucii –
Cântă cucii!
Awe bleteth after lomb,
Lhouth after calve cu;
Bulluc sterteth, bucke verteth,
Murie sing cuccu!
Oaia behăie spre miel,
Saltă iezii ca nălucii;
Vaca muge la viţel,
Vesel cântă cucii!
Cuccu, cuccu, well singes thu, cuccu:
Ne swike thu naver nu;
Sing cuccu, nu, sing cuccu,
Sing cuccu, sing cuccu, nu!
Cuce, bine cânţi cu-cu:
Nu te mai opri de-acu’;
Cântă-acu’ tu, cuce, tu,
Cântă, cântă, cuce-acu’!

„O, câte lucruri” de Alexandru Philippide

O, câte lucruri au rămas nespuse,
Vechi juvaeruri risipite-n drum!
De unde să le mai adun acum,
În drum pierdute, pe vecie duse?
How many things, oh, have remained unsaid,
Old jewels scattered as I wandered on!
Where can I find and pick them up again,
All lost along the road, forever gone!
M-aşteaptă poate altele în cale
Dar viaţa merge repede la vale,
Şi vremea tot mai iute se prăvale.
În evu-n care-antice manuscripte
S-adăposteau prin chinovii şi cripte.
Monafii scribi tot aşteptând să vie
De prin meleaguri arăbeşti hârtie,
Rădeau vechi pergamente cu-o custură
Şi copiau pe ele din Scriptură;
Nu scrijălau adânc, să nu le strice,
Şi-aşa, sub psalmi, trăiau gânduri antice.
Maybe some others lie in wait for me,
But life is flowing onwards speedily
And time itself will quickly downward flee.
In the dark age when olden manuscripts
Found shelter in the cloisters and their crypts,
The scrivener monks while wainting months on end
For writing paper from some Arab land
Would scrape from parchments, with a blade, old wit
And write out on them from the Holy Writ;
They would not scratch deep lest the face be marred,
And thus, beneath the psalms, old thoughts survived.
Mi-i sufletul ca unul din aceste
Ciudate manuscripte palimpseste;
Şterg scrisul proaspăt şi deodată iese
Alt scris, cu slove ciunte, ne-nţelese.
My soul, I fancy, can be likened best
To those strange manuscripts called palimpsests;
I start erasing the fresh writing and
From under I lay bare a crabbed hand.
O, dac-aş izbuti să le descurc,
La vechile izvoare să mă urc,
Poate-aş găsi-n adâncul lor pitite
Acele lucruri ce n-au fost rostite!
Oh, could I only make its meaning ring,
And follow up the stream to its old spring,
Mayby I’d find, deep hidden in its bed,
Those things that never, never have been said!

„Troilus and Criseyde. Book I” de Geoffrey Chaucer

The double sorwe of Troilus to tellen,
That was the king Priamus sone of Troye,
In lovinge, how his aventures fellen
Fro wo to wele, and after out of Ioye,
My purpos is, er that I parte fro ye.
Thesiphone, thou help me for tendyte
Thise woful vers, that wepen as I wryte!
De Troil, rigăi Priam fiu mezin –
Cât încă sunt cu voi aici – agale
Voi depăna: cum a sorbit din plin
Iubirea cu amarurile sale
Şi bucurii, şi-apoi cumplita-i jale.
Ajută-mi, Tisiphona, să înstrun
Trist viersul meu ce plânge cât îl spun.
