A lawyer attended the funeral of a rich man. A friend, arriving late, took a seat beside him and whispered, „How far has the service gone?”
The lawyer nodded toward the clergyman in the pulpit and whispered back, „He just opened for the defense.”
Putem auzi adesea în limba engleză adjectivul „speechless” – adică „mut de uimire”, „fără cuvinte”.
Ce uită lumea este originea acestui cuvânt. În engleza veche, „speechless” însemna exact ceea ce descrie: „mut”. Nu pe moment, ci permanent. Incapabil de a vorbi din cauza unei probleme fizice.
Sensul figurat a apărut în perioada englezei de mijloc. Probabil este o găselniţă a marelui poet Geoffrey Chaucer. Ideea a prins atât de bine, încât – în timp – sensul original a fost uitat. Şi uite aşa, sensul figurat a devenit sensul propriu.
