„Sonet XXIV” de William Shakespeare

Mine eye hath played the painter and hath stelled
Thy beauty’s form in table of my heart.
My body is the frame wherein ‘tis held,
And perspective it is best painter’s art;
Ochiul, pe placa inimii mi-a scris,
pictor timid, întreaga-ţi frumuseţe
şi-o rană-i trupu-nconjurând ca-n vis
mirajul perspectivei cu dulci feţe
For through the painter must you see his skill;
To find where your true image pictured lies,
Which in my bosom’s shop is hanging still,
That hath his windows glazèd with thine eyes.
că numai pictoru-ar putea afla
adevăratul chip pictat, cel care
în inima-atelier va sta
al cărui geam, privirea ta îmi pare.
Now see what good turns eyes for eyes have done:
Mine eyes have drawn thy shape, and thine for me
Are windows to my breast, wherethrough the sun
Delights to peep, to gaze therein on thee.
Vezi, ochii mei li-s ochilor robiţi,
pictează-ai mei şi-ai tăi, vitrai de temple
ţin loc ferestrei mele, străjuiţi
de soarele ce vine să-i contemple.
Yet eyes this cunning want to grace their art:
They draw but what they see, know not the heart.
Şi totuşi, ochii spun numai ce văd,
ei nu citesc al inimii prăpăd.

„Sonet V” de William Shakespeare

Those hours, that with gentle work did frame
The lovely gaze where every eye doth dwell
Will play the tyrants to the very same,
And that unfair which fairly doth excel;
Acele ore care cu nesaţii
au făurit privirea-ţi nepereche,
vor fi tiranii propriei creaţii
şi-o vor sluţi ca pe o mască veche.
For never-resting time leads summer on
To hideous winter, and confounds him there,
Sap checked with frost, and lusty leaves quite gone,
Beauty o’er-snowed, and bareness everywhere.
Că timpul mişcător târăşte vara
şi în hidoasa iarnă va s-o-ndrume,
seve-nfrânează cu, de gheaţă, gheara
şi-i frumuseţea ninsă, gol e-n lume.
Then were not summer’s distillation left
A liquid prisoner pent in walls of glass,
Beauty’s effect with beauty were bereft,
Nor it nor no remembrance what it was.
Din distilarea verii ne rămâne,
fluid captiv între pereţi de sticlă,
al frumuseţii duh, ajuns fărâme
şi-apoi şi el prelins în marea frică.
But flowers distilled, though they with winter meet,
Lose but their show; their substance still lives sweet.
Dar florile ce iernii-i înfrâng casna
doar chipu-şi pierd. Rămâne-le mireasma…

„Sonet XLI” de William Shakespeare

Those pretty wrongs that liberty commits
When I am sometime absent from thy heart,
Thy beauty and thy years full well befits,
For still temptation follows where thou art.
Măruntele păcate-n care cade
inima ta, de-o părăsesc o clipă,
li-s pe măsura anilor tăi poate,
ispitele când te urmează-n pripă.
Gentle thou art, and therefore to be won;
Beauteous thou art, therefore to be assailed;
And when a woman woos, what woman’s son
Will sourly leave her till he have prevailed?
Eşti nobil, deci eşti prada cea de seamă,
frumos, stârneşti asalturile numa’
şi ce bărbat dacă muierea-l cheamă
o va lăsa fără să-şi facă suma?
Ay me, but yet thou mightst my seat forbear,
And chide thy beauty and thy straying youth,
Who lead thee in their riot even there
Where thou art forced to break a two-fold troth:
Vai mie! -ai fi putut să-mi uiţi conacul
să-ţi mustri frumuseţea şi-acel farmec
ce te-a mânat într-ânsul să-ţi faci veacul
şi-ajunse două jurăminţi să darme:
Hers, by thy beauty tempting her to thee,
Thine, by thy beauty being false to me.
Al ei, prin vraja împlinind ispite
al tău, prin vraja care mă ucide…

„Sonet XXX” de William Shakespeare

When to the session of sweet silent thought
I summon up remembrance of things past,
I sigh the lack of many a thing I sought,
And with old woes new wail my dear time’s waste.
Când la taifasul gândurilor bune
le chem la mine, glasuri din trecut,
deplâng speranţe ce-n deşertăciune
s-au stins şi timpu-mi jelui, cel pierdut.
Then can I drown an eye unused to flow
For precious friends hid in death’s dateless night,
And weep afresh love’s long-since-cancelled woe,
And moan th’ expense of many a vanished sight.
De lacrimă străin, ochiul îi plânge
pe bunii prieteni ce în moarte-s duşi,
– iubiri cu chipuri şterse – şi-i răsfrânge
în lacrimă, pe cei de după uşi…
Then can I grieve at grievances foregone,
And heavily from woe to woe tell o’er
The sad account of fore-bemoaned moan,
Which I new pay as if not paid before.
Mă mai frământă pierderile câte
le-am încercat cândva şi seamă dau,
plătesc din nou imagini mohorâte
ce, vii, odată mă înconjurau.
But if the while I think on thee, dear friend,
All losses are restored, and sorrows end.
De mă gândesc la tine, prieten drag,
tot ce-a furat, mi-ntoarce timpu-n prag.

„Sonet LXXXV” de William Shakespeare

My tongue-tied muse in manners holds her still,
While comments of your praise, richly compiled,
Reserve thy character with golden quill,
And precious phrase by all the muses filed.
E potolită muza mea, sărmana,
numai tălmacii slavei tale, iată,
în litere de aur moaie pana,
scriind cu toate muzele deodată.
I think good thoughts, whilst other write good words,
And like unlettered clerk still cry „Amen”
To every hymn that able spirit affords
In polished form of well-refinèd pen.
Gândesc de bine, altul gându-mi scrie,
copist cam necioplit, eu strig „Amin!”
la fiecare imn ce îl învie
condeiul cel de strălucire plin.
Hearing you praised, I say „‘Tis so, ‘tis true”,
And to the most of praise add something more;
But that is in my thought, whose love to you,
Though words come hindmost, holds his rank before.
Eşti lăudat şi strig „Aşa-i!” şi-n turmă
adaug încă laudei grozave
cuvinte (nerostite) spuse-n urmă,
dar primele urcând în epitafe…
Then others for the breath of words respect,
Me for my dumb thoughts, speaking in effect.
Iubeşte-n alţii vorbele-puzderii
şi-n mine numai vocile tăcerii…

„Sonet LV” de William Shakespeare

Not marble nor the gilded monuments
Of princes shall outlive this powerful rhyme,
But you shall shine more bright in these contents
Than unswept stone besmeared with sluttish time.
Nici marmuri princiare, nici morminte
n-or supravieţui acestor rime,
dar tu vei fi lumina ce aprinde
piatra murdară-a vremii anonime!
When wasteful war shall statues overturn,
And broils root out the work of masonry,
Nor Mars his sword nor war’s quick fire shall burn
The living record of your memory.
Război pustiitor va sparge statui,
va pârjoli a varului lucrare,
nici Marte cu-a lui spadă, nici gealatu-i,
războiul, nu te-or trece în uitare!
‘Gainst death and all oblivious enmity
Shall you pace forth; your praise shall still find room
Even in the eyes of all posterity
That wear this world out to the ending doom.
Potrivnic îndurărilor şi morţii,
găsi-vei slavei tale loc sub cer,
sub ochii celor care vin şi-ai sorţii
ce lumile le-mpinge către ger.
So, till the judgement that yourself arise,
You live in this, and dwell in lovers’ eyes.
Până să-ţi bată-a judecăţii oră
versul te-arată celor ce te-adoră!
