„Şi dacă…” de Mihai Eminescu

Şi dacă ramuri bat în geam
Şi se cutremur plopii,
E ca în minte să te am
Şi-ncet să te apropii.
And if the branches tap my pane
And the poplars whisper nightly,
It is to make me dream again
I hold you to me tightly.

„Sonet LXXXVI” de William Shakespeare

Was it the proud full sail of his great verse
Bound for the prize of all-too-precious you
That did my ripe thoughts in my brain inhearse,
Making their tomb the womb wherein they grew?
Semeţ întinde vela poeziei
cel ce de preţul tău este legat,
cum gândului închis în creier fie-i
mormânt, matricea care l-a-nălţat.
Was it his spirit, by spirits taught to write
Above a mortal pitch, that struck me dead?
No, neither he nor his compeers by night
Giving him aid my verse astonished
Ce spirite pe creste i-au dus firea
încât lovit de moarte-n faţă-i sunt?
Nici el, nici fraţii lui de nicăierea
n-or să-mi uimească versul care-l cânt.
He nor that affable familiar ghost
Which nightly gulls him with intelligence,
As victors, of my silence cannot boast;
I was no sick of any fear from thence.
Nici el, nici nobilele lui vedenii
care-i înşeală ochii-n asfinţit
n-or să-mi învingă linişti şi muţenii,
nicicând de teama lor n-am suferit.
But when your countenance filled up his line,
Then lacked I matter; that enfeebled mine.
Când versu-i umpli lui, cu inspirare,
al meu rămâne fără de suflare.

„Vestitorii primăverii” de George Coşbuc

Dintr-alte ţări, de soare pline,
Pe unde-aţi fost şi voi străine,
Veniţi, dragi păsări, înapoi
Veniţi cu bine!
De frunze şi de cântec goi,
Plâng codrii cei lipsiţi de voi.
From sunny countries and skies blue
From which last automn-tide you flew,
Return, dear birds, where you belong,
Most welcome, you!
The woods, bereft of leaf and song,
Weep for they have missed you too long.

„Song from Paracelsus” de Robert Browning

Heap cassia, sandal-buds stripes
Of labdanum, and aloe-balls,
Smear’d with dull nard an Indian wipes
From out her hair: such balsam falls
Down sea-side mountain pedestals,
From tree-tops where tired winds are fain,
Spent with the vast and howling main,
To treasure half their island-gain.
Din cassia, santal înmugurind, fâşii
De-aloes şi labdanum când şi când,
Sau nard ce-o indiancă risipi
Din părul ei: acest balsam căzând
Din piedestal de munţi spre-al mării rând,
Din vârf de pomi când adieri se-nclin,
Risipă-i unei largi, vuinde mâini,
Comornicind al insulei preaplin.
And strew faint sweetness from some old
Egyptian’s fine worm-eaten shroud
Which breaks to dust when once unroll’d;
Or shredded perfume, like a cloud
From closet long to quiet vow’d,
With moth’d and dropping arras hung,
Mouldering her lute and books among,
As when a queen, long dead, was young.
Împrăştiind dulceag leşin precum
Vechi giulgii egiptene care praf
Se fac dacă le desfăşori acum;
mireasmă spulberată ca un vraf
De nori, din loc închis, tăcut; canaf
Urzit, de molii ros, ce-atârnă smult,
Cum prin lăute putrezind şi cărţi ascult
Juna regină ce-a murit demult.

„Poezia” de Nichita Stănescu

Poezia este ochiul care plânge.
Ea este umărul care plânge,
ochiul umărului care plânge.
Ea este mâna care plânge,
ochiul mâinii care plânge.
Ea este ţapa care plânge,
ochiul călcâiului care plânge.
O voi, prieteni,
poezia nu este lacrimă
ea este însuşi plânsul,
plânsul unui ochi neinventat,
lacrima ochiului
celui care trebuie să fie frumos,
lacrima celui care trebuie să fie fericit.
Poetry is the weeping eye
it is the weeping shoulder
the weeping eye of the shoulder
it is the weeping hand
the weeping eye of the hand
it is the weeping soul
the weeping eye of the heel.
Oh, you friends,
poetry is not a tear
it is the weeping itself
the weeping of an uninvented eye
the tear of the eye
of the one who must be beautiful
of the one who must be happy.

„Sonet III” de Mihai Eminescu

Când însuşi glasul gândurilor tace,
Mă-ngână cântul unei dulci evlavii –
Atunci te chem; chemarea-mi asculta-vei?
Din neguri reci plutind te vei desface?
When e’en the inner voice of thought is still,
And does some sacred chant my soul endear,
‘Tis then I call to thee; but will you hear?
Will from the floating mists your form distil?
Puterea nopţii blând însenina-vei
Cu ochii mari şi purtători de pace?
Răsai din umbra vremilor încoace,
Ca să te văd venind – ca-n vis, aşa vii!
Will night its tender power of wonder rear
And your great, peaceful eyes their light fulfil,
That of the rays that bygone hours spill
To me as in a dream you do appear?
Cobori încet… aproape, mai aproape,
Te pleacă iar zâmbind peste-a mea faţă,
A ta iubire c-un suspin arat-o,
But come to me… come near, come still more near…
Smiling you bend to gaze into my face
While does your sigh gentle love make clear.
Cu geana ta m-atinge pe pleoape,
Să simt fiorii strângerii în braţe –
Pe veci pierduto, vecinic adorato!
Upon my eyes I feel you lashes’ trace,
O love, for ever lost, for ever dear,
To know the aching thrill of your embrace!
