The stones open an eye of stone,
the bones open an eye of bone.
Each dog has a snout in place of its eyes, and barks
from three snouts, generously.
It’s a constant transforming of eyes in the air.
The eye of the cat turns into leaves.
The leaves murmur a sweet lament
in the sockets of the mother cats.
My eyes remain open and misted.
My eye blinks in the town council tower,
and suddenly I sense in my sockets,
with infant in arms, the statues of Mary. |

I grant thou wert not married to my muse,
And therefore mayst without attaint o’erlook
The dedicated words which writers use
Of their fair subject, blessing every book. |
N-ai fost perechea muzei mele, aşa e,
şi lesne poţi să-i înţelegi pe scribii
ce binecuvântează în vreo foaie
pe cei iubiţi, cu scula diatribii. |
Thou art as fair in knowledge as in hue
Finding thy worth a limit past my praise,
And therefore art enforced to seek anew
Some fresher stamp of these time-bettering days. |
And do so, love; yet when they have devised
What strained touches rhetoric can lend,
Thou, truly fair, wert truly sympathized
In true plain words by thy true-telling friend; |
Să nu faci altfel! Când va fi să sune
retoricile noii osanale
să ştii că mintea mea te recompune
cu adevărul harurilor tale… |
And their gross painting might be better used
Where cheeks need blood: in thee it is abused. |
Te ocolească doar scorniri stângace
ce n-au cu tinereţea ta a face… |

The years have sped, and time still swiftly flies
Since that first sacred hour in which we met;
But how we loved I can no more forget,
Sweet wonder with cold hands and such big eyes. |
O, vino iar! Cuvinte dulci inspiră-mi,
Privirea ta asupra mea se plece,
Sub raza ei mă lasă a petrece
Şi cânturi nouă smulge tu din liră-mi. |
O, come again! Your words inspire me yet,
While your soft gaze upon me gently lies,
That’neath its ray new life in shall rise,
And you new songs upon my lyre beget. |
Tu nici nu ştii a ta apropiere
Cum inima-mi de-adânc o linişteşte,
Ca răsărirea stelei în tăcere; |
When you come near to me you little know
How soothed my heart is then, as though with balm,
As when some star does in the heavens show; |
Iar când te văd zâmbind copilăreşte,
Se stinge-atunci o viaţă de durere,
Privirea-mi arde, sufletul îmi creşte. |
Your childish smile so full of tender charm
Has power to quench this life drawn out in woe
And fill my eyes with fire, my soul with calm. |

Dacă tu vei căuta
Să se nalţe pacinic fumul
Jertfei tale, nu uita
Că, de ai spre soare drumul,
Umbra este-n urma ta. |
Your burnt offspring’s smoke will wind
Peacefully towards the skies
Only if you bear in mind
That when you go to the sun,
Your dark shadow is behind. |

The young soldiers have taken their seats in the window,
exactly as found, shot in their foreheads –
to be seen, they were seated in the shop window,
true to their ultimate gestures,
profiles, arms, knees, their ultimate gestures,
as when they were shot, unawares, in their foreheads
or between their shoulder blades with that flame
finer than a child’s finger pointing to the moon. |
