Thy gift, thy tables, are within my brain
Full charactered with lasting memory,
Which shall above that idle rank remain
Beyond all date, even to eternity; |
Ţin filele de tine scrise-n minte
cu litere fierbinţi, de neuitare,
ce-s mai presus de slova mea cuminte
cu care-nfrunt eternităţi şi zare. |
Or at the least so long as brain and heart
Have faculty by nature to subsist,
Till each to razed oblivion yield his part
Of thee, thy record never can be missed. |
Sau le voi ţine-n inimă şi-n fapte,
ştiindu-le dăinuitoarea fire
nicicând pierdute-n risipiri şi noapte
şi pururi rămânând în amintire? |
That poor retention could not so much hold,
Nor need I tallies thy dear love to score;
Therefore to give them from me was I bold,
To trust those tables that receive thee more. |
Memoria-mi în prăfuita-i rază
doar scrisa ta întreagă o reţine
şi dragostea-n răboj nu şi-o crestează,
ea crede doar cuvântul de la tine. |
To keep an adjunct to remember thee
Were to import forgetfulness in me. |
Printr-un alt semn la mine să te-aduc?
Aş fi ca altul nimenea, uituc… |

Softly, in the dusk, a woman is singing to me;
Taking me back down the vista of years, till I see
A child sitting under the piano, in the boom
of the tingling strings
And pressing the small, poised feet of a mother
who smiles as she sings. |
In spite of myself, the insidious mastery of song
Betrays me back, till the heart of me weeps to belong
To the old Sunday evenings at home, with winter outside
And hymns in the cosy parlour, the tinkling piano our guide. |
So now it is vain for the singer to burst into clamour
With the great black piano appassionato. The glamour
Of childish days is upon me, my manhood is cast
Down in the flood of remembrance, I weep
like a child for the past. |
Acum în zadar cântăreaţa se-avântă-nsoţită de marele
Negru pian, appassionato. Fastuoase hotarele
Copilăriei m-au năpădit, bărbăţia mi-e dusă-n torent
De-amintiri, ca un prunc suspin după neprezent. |

‘Love at first sight’ some say, misnaming
Discovery of twinned helplessness
Against the huge tug of procreation. |
But friendship at first sight? This also
Catches fiercely at the surprised heart
So that the cheek blanches and then blushes. |
Dar prietenie la prima vedere? Şi ea
Grozav înşfacă inima uluită
Încât obrazul păleşte şi-apoi deodată-i ca focul. |

Sparrows were feeding in a freezing drizzle
That while you watched turned into pieces of snow
Riding a gradient invisible
From silver aslant to random, white, and slow. |
There came a moment that you couldn’t tell.
And then they clearly flew instead of fell. |

So are you to my thoughts as food to life,
Or as sweet-seasoned showers are to the ground;
And for the peace of you I hold such strife
As ‘twixt a miser and his wealth is found: |
Visului meu îi eşti a vieţii hrană
eşti ploaia repede ce udă glia
cu tine lupt, pândind a ta icoană
ca un zgârcit ce-şi află bogăţia. |
Now proud as an enjoyer, and anon
Doubting the filching age will steal his treasure;
Now counting best to be with you alone,
Then bettered that the world may see my pleasure; |
Acum semeţul sunt, ce-n vis se scaldă,
acum în calea furilor sunt paznic,
acum cu tine m-aş vroi de-olaltă,
acum norodu-l chem la al meu praznic! |
Sometime all full will feasting on your sight,
And by and by clean starved for a look;
Possessing or pursuing no delight
Save what is had or must from you be took. |
Ades mă ospătez cu-a ta privire
şi alteori mi-nfometez fiinţa,
nealegând vreo altă mulţumire
decât de ţi-o aştept, făgăduinţa. |
Thus do I pine and surfeit day by day,
Or gluttoning on all, or all away. |
Astfel tânjesc şi mă îndop destul
sunt lacom ori sunt veşnic nesătul. |

The world is charged with the grandeur og God.
It will flame out, like shining from shook foil;
It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil
Crushed. Why do men then now not reck his rod?
Generations have trod, have trod, have trod;
And all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil;
And wears man’s smudge and shares man’s smel: the soil
Is bare now, nor can foot feel, being shod. |
Generaţii întregi zdrobiră, zdrobiră mereu;
Totul ars de negoţ, mânjit de trudă, spurcat e;
Poartă petele omului, mirosul cu el îl împarte:
Ogorul e sterp, nici tălpile nu-l mai simt, încălţate. |
