When I do count the clock that tells the time,
And see the brave day sunk in hideous night;
When I behold the violet past prime,
And sable curls ensilvered o’er with white; |
Când văd cum timpul curge pe cadrane
şi ziua se afundă-n noaptea crudă,
când văd pălirea florii diafane
şi viţa albă-n negrul păr crescută; |
When lofty trees I see barren of leaves
Which erst from heat did canopy the herd,
And summer’s green all girded up in sheaves
Borne on the bier with white and bristly beard: |
când arborii sunt sterpi, cu foi bătrâne,
ei, baldachin al turmelor, în vară
şi verdele-nchingat în snopi rămâne
pe năsălie dus pe roţi de cară; |
Then of thy beauty do I question make
That thou among the wastes of time must go,
Since sweets and beauties do themselves forsake,
And die as fast as they see others grow; |
atunci la frumuseţea ta-mi duc gândul,
tu, care-o porţi prin vânt şi irosire
dulceţi şi farmec – timpul li-i mormântul –
alte minuni vin lumile să mire. |
And nothing ‘gainst time’s scythe can make defence
Save breed to brave him when he takes thee hence. |
nu-i pavăză când timpu-şi sună coasa,
doar dacă puii-ţi luminează casa… |

Noi ştim că unu ori unu fac unu,
dar un inorog ori o pară
nu ştim cât face.
Ştim că cinci fără patru fac unu,
dar un nor fără o corabie
nu ştim cât face.
Ştim, noi ştim că opt
împărţit la opt fac unu,
dar un munte împărţit la o capră
nu ştim cât face.
Ştim că unu plus unu fac doi,
dar eu şi cu tine,
nu Ştim, vai, nu ştim cât facem. |
We know that one times one is one,
but an unicorn times a pear
have no idea what it is.
We know that five minus four is one
but a cloud minus a sailboat
have no idea what it is.
We know that eight
divided by eight is one,
but a mountain divided by a goat
have no idea what it is.
We know that one plus one is two,
but me and you, oh,
we have no idea what it is. |

„O, rămâi, rămâi la mine,
Te iubesc atât de mult!
Ale tale doruri toate
Numai eu ştiu să le-ascult; |
„O remain, dear one, I love you,
Stay with me in my fair land,
For your dreamings and your longings
Only I can understand. |

When you are old and gray and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep; |
Căruntă, picotind lângă cămin,
Ia cartea asta şi citind, visează
Privirea caldă, umedă şi trează
A ochiului cândva adânc, senin. |
How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true;
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face; |
O, câţi, cu dragostea sau cu minciuna
Nu ţi-au iubit al frumuseţii har,
Dar unul numai sufletul hoinar
Şi chipul de dureri schimbat întruna. |
And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars. |
Te pleacă peste jarul de surcele
Şi trist şopteşte c-a zburat iubirea
Mai sus de munţii fraţi cu nesfârşirea
Ca să-şi ascundă chipul printre stele. |

That you were once unkind befriends me now,
And for that sorrow which I then did feel
Needs must I under my transgression bow,
Unless my nerves were brass or hammered steel. |
Cruzimea ta de ieri azi mă-ndulceşte
şi-nseninează chipul meu durut,
greşala mă-ncovoaie dar, fireşte
n-am nervi de-aramă ori de fier bătut. |
For if you were by my unkindness shaken
As I by yours, you’ve past a hell of time,
And I, a tyrant, have no leisure taken
To weigh how once I suffered in your crime. |
De-ai fost rănit şi tu fără speranţă,
s-ar crede că ai fost o vreme-n iad
dar eu, tiranul, n-am pus în balanţă
cât am lovit şi cât am îndurat. |
O that our night of woe might have remembered
My deepest sense how hard true sorrow hits,
And soon to you as you to me then tendered
The humble salve which wounded bosoms fits! |
O, noaptea vechile dureri le-abate,
ce dâre-adânci în visul tău săpăm!
şi rănile ni le închide, toate,
cu tămăduitor, umil balsam. |
But that your trespass now becomes a fee;
Mine ransoms yours, and yours must ransom me. |
Nici vinile nu pot să ne despartă:
mă iartă vina ta şi-a mea te iartă… |

Ca şi cum un tăiş superior
mi-ar fi despărţit norii de vârfurile munţilor,
aşa se zbate trupul meu uriaş, decapitat,
lăsându-şi pe cer capul fugitiv. |
As though the superior knife adge
had cut my clouds from the mountain tops
does my immense and headless body hurl itself about,
leaving its fugitive head in the sky. |
