When the lamp went out by my bed I woke up with the early birds.
I sat at my open window with a fresh wreath on my loose hair.
The young traveller came along the road in the rosy mist of the morning.
A pearl chain was on his neck, and the sun’s rays fell on his crown.
He stopped before my door and asked me with an eager cry, „Where is she?”
For very shame I could not say, „She is I, young traveller, she is I.” |
It was dusk and the lamp was not lit.
I was listlessly braiding my hair.
The young traveller came on his chariot in the glow of the setting sun.
His horses were foaming at the mouth, and there was dust on his garment.
He alighted at my door and asked in a tired voice, „Where is she?”
For very shame I could not say, „She is I, weary traveller, she is I.” |
It is an April night. The lamp is burning in my room.
The breeze of the south comes gently. The noisy parrot sleeps in its cage.
My bodice is of the colour of the peacock’s throat, and my mantle is green as young grass.
I sit upon the floor at the window watching the deserted street.
Through the dark night I keep humming, „She is I, despairing traveller, she is I.” |

The fascination of what’s difficult
Has dried the sap out of my veins, and rent
Spontaneous joy and natural content
Out of my heart. There’s something ails our colt
That must, as if it had not holy blood
Nor on Olympus leaped from cloud to cloud,
Shiver under the lash, strain, sweat and jolt
As though it dragged road-metal. My curse on plays
That have to be set up in fifty ways,
On the day’s war with every knave and dolt,
Theatre business, management of men.
I swear before the dawn comes round again
I’ll find the stable and pull out the bolt. |
Atracţia a ceea ce e greu
Îmi seacă seva-n vine şi – deodată –
Fireasca veselie-i spulberată…
Că-i teatrul bâlci!…

Where art thou, muse, that thou forget’st so long
To speak of that which gives thee all thy might?
Spend’st thou thy fury on some worthless song,
Dark’ning thy power to lend base subjects light? |
Unde eşti, muză? Ai uitat pesemne
să-l cânţi pe cel ce-ţi dăruieşte vlaga,
te-nverşunezi în cântece nedemne,
măruntelor chemări le dai întreaga |
Return, forgetful muse, and straight redeem
In gentle numbers time so idly spent;
Sing to the ear that doth thy lays esteem,
And gives thy pen both skill and argument. |
ta patimă? Te reîntoarce dară
s-aduci în vers trândavul timp, trecutul
şi în auzul celui drag coboară
şi dăi condeiului, măiastru, scutul. |
Rise, resty muse, my love’s sweet face survey
If time have any wrinkle graven there.
If any, be a satire to decay
And make time’s spoils despisèd everywhere. |
O, te ridică, muză! Fruntea celui
mereu iubit o ară multe cute?
De e aşa, las muza cum i-e felu-i
ce timpul pângăreşte, să sărute… |
Give my love fame faster than Time wastes life;
So, thou prevent’st his scythe and crooked knife. |
Dă-i dragostei ce timpu-i ia, smintitul;
frângându-i-l, încovoiat, cuţitul! |

I am restless. I am athirst for far-away things.
My soul goes out in a longing to touch the skirt of the dim distance.
O Great Beyond, O the keen call of thy flute!
I forget, I ever forget, that I have no wings to fly, that I am bound in this spot evermore. |
Nu izbutesc să-mi aflu hodină. Mi-e sete de nemărginire.
Sufletul meu năzuieşte către neştiutele depărtări.
O, tu, Marele Dincolo, o, sfâşietoare chemare a flautului tău!
I am eager and wakeful, I am a stranger in a strange land.
Thy breath comes to me whispering an impossible hope.
Thy tongue is known to my heart as its very own.
O Far-to-seek, O the keen call of thy flute!
I forget, I ever forget, that I know not the way, that I have not the winged horse. |
O, Mare Necunoscut, o , sfâşietoare chemare a flautului tău!
Uit, uit mereu că nu cunosc drumul, că nu am cal înaripat. |
I am listless, I am a wanderer in my heart.
In the sunny haze of the languid hours, what vast vision of thine takes shape in the blue of the sky!
O Farthest end, O the keen call of thy flute!
I forget, I ever forget, that the gates are shut everywhere in the house where I dwell alone! |
O, Mare Necunoscut! O, Sfâşietoare chemare a flautului tău!

When I die, I will see the lining of the world.
The other side, beyond bird, mountain, sunset.
The true meaning, ready to be decoded.
What never added up will add Up,
What was incomprehensible will be comprehended.
– And if there is no lining to the world?
If a thrush on a branch is not a sign,
But just a thrush on the branch? If night and day
Make no sense following each other?
And on this earth there is nothing except this earth?
– Even if that is so, there will remain
A word wakened by lips that perish,
A tireless messenger who runs and runs
Through interstellar fields, through the revolving galaxies,
And calls out, protests, screams. |

For shame deny that thou bear’st love to any,
Who for thyself art so unprovident.
Grant, if thou wilt, thou art beloved of many,
But that thou none lov’st is most evident; |
De dragoste ruşine-i să n-asculţi
o, tu, ce-i eşti nesăbuinţei fiu,
For thou art so possessed with murd’rous hate,
That ‘gainst thyself thou stick’st not to conspire,
Seeking that beauteous roof to ruinate
Which to repair should be thy chief desire. |
Muncit de ură, inima-ţi încarci
cu patimă-potrivă-ţi şi ai vrea
al casei bun acoperiş să-l spargi
în loc să-ţi zidăreşti conac în ea. |
O, change thy thought, that I may change my mind!
Shall hate be fairer lodged than gentle love?
Be as thy presence is, gracious and kind,
Or to thyself at least kind-hearted prove. |
urii preferă-i al iubirii har,
fii precum eşti, iluminat de nimb,
baremi de tine-ndură-te măcar… |
Make thee another self for love of me,
That beauty still may live in thine or thee. |
Alt eu să-ţi faci, iubindu-mă pe mine
şi frumuseţi te-or locui, depline. |
