„Why so Pale and Wan?” de John Suckling

Why so pale and wan, fond lover?
Prithee, why so pale?
Will, when looking well can’t move her,
Looking ill prevail?
Prithee, why so pale?
Pentru ce-arăţi stins şi pal,
Prost ibovnic, zi?
Speri că numai în ăst hal
Poţi a o-mblânzi?
Pal de ce-arăţi, zi?
Why so dull and mute, young sinner?
Prithee, why so mute?
Will, when speaking well can’t win her,
Saying nothing do ‘t?
Prithee, why so mute?
June pătimaş ce eşti?
Ce stai trist şi mut?
Speri tăcând s-o-ademeneşti?
Altfel n-ai putut?
Zi, de ce stai mult?
Quit, quit for shame! This will not move;
This cannot take her.
If of herself she will not love,
Nothing can make her:
The devil take her!
Schimbă foaia! că n-ai spor,
N-o-ndupleci aşa;
Nu-i chip s-o îmbii spre-amor
Dacă nu vrea ea;
Naiba să o ia!

„For my own Monument” de Matthew Prior

As doctors give physic by way of prevention,
Mat, alive and in health, of his tombstone took care;
For delays are unsafe, and his pious intention
May haply be never fulfill’d by his heir.
Cum vracii scriu leacuri în chip preventiv,
Viu, Mat şi-a tocmit monument funerar;
Nu-i bună-amânarea – pe simplul motiv
Că-l poate omite al său legatar.

„The Bard: A Pindaric Ode” de Thomas Grey

„Ruin seize thee, ruthless King!
Confusion on thy banners wait,
Tho’ fann’d by Conquest’s crimson wing
They mock the air with idle state.
Helm, nor hauberk’s twisted mail,
Nor even thy virtues, tyrant, shall avail
To save thy secret soul from nightly fears,
From Cambria’s curse, from Cambria’s tears!”
Such were the sounds, that o’er the crested pride
Of the first Edward scatter’d wild dismay,
As down the steep of Snowdon’s shaggy side
He wound with toilsome march his long array.
Stout Glo’ster stood aghast in speechless trance;
To arms! cried Mortimer, and couch’d his quiv’ring lance.
„Prinţ nendurat, urgie ţie!
Să-ţi vezi zăludele drapele
Pleoştite chiar când către ele
Vânt roş de cuceriri adie;
Nici coif, nici za, nici trunchiul tău vânjos
Nu îţi vor fi, Tirane, de folos
Să-ţi aperi, noaptea, cugetul
De-al Cambriei blestem şi de-al ei plâns!”
Aceste vorbe au umplut de-oroare
Pe mult fălosul Eduard-Întâi,
Când şerpuiau pe-abruptele ponoare
Din Snowdon – trudnic şir – oştenii săi.
Ca-n transă, mut, sta Glo’ster spăimântat;
„La arme!” strigă Mortimer şi lancea i-a vibrat.

„Meeting” de George Crabbe

My Damon was the first to wake
The gentle flame that cannot die;
My Damon is the last to take
The faithful bosom’s softest sigh:
The life between is nothing worth,
O cast it from thy thought away!
Think of the day that gave it birth,
And this its sweet returning day.
Damon al meu a-ncins întâi
Un jar ce n-am cum să-mi alin,
Din sufletul supus tot lui
Îi las şi ultimul suspin.
O, anii seci de mai nainte,
În gând nu ni-i vom mai trezi!
Doar prima zi tu ţine-o minte,
Şi-a revederii dulce zi.
Buried be all that has been done,
Or say that naught is done amiss;
For who the dangerous path can shun
In such bewildering world as this?
But love can every fault forgive,
Or with a tender look reprove;
And now let naught in memory live
But that we meet, and that we love.
Ce-a fost cândva, azi e-n mormânt;
Sau zic: nu-i nimeni culpeş… Oare
Căi numai drepte unde sunt
În astă lume-amăgitoare?
Dar ierţi orice dacă iubeşti,
Sau, ne mustrăm din ochi, blajin;
Şi-acum atât să-ţi aminteşti:
Că ne-ntâlnim, că ne iubim…

„My Mary” de William Cowper

The twentieth year is wellnigh past
Since first our sky was overcast;
Ah, would that this might be the last!
My Mary!
Se fac ani douăzeci de când
Văd nori pe-al nostru cer trecând;
Ah, de s-ar duce mai curând!
Maria mea!

„Late Wisdom” de George Crabbe

We’ve trod the maze of error round,
Long wandering in the winding glade;
And now the torch of truth is found,
It only shows us where we strayed:
By long experience taught, we know—
Can rightly judge of friends and foes;
Can all the worth of these allow,
And all the faults discern in those.
Am tot umblat prin labirintul
Rău încâlcitelor păcate;
Şi adevărul, azi, găsindu-l
Doar cum dăm greş poate s-arate;
Experienţe lungi te-nvaţă
Pe răi şi buni a-i măsura:
Vezi cum trec unii drepţi prin viaţă,
Dar şi metehnele-altora.
Now, ‘tis our boast that we can quell
The wildest passions in their rage,
Can their destructive force repel,
And their impetuous wrath assuage.—
Ah, Virtue! dost thou arm when now
This bold rebellious race are fled?
When all these tyrants rest, and thou
Art warring with the mighty dead?
Mă-ngâmf, acum, că pot să-mpiedic
Al patimei puhoi păgân,
Să-i birui iureşul bezmetic
Şi furia să i-o înfrân –
Dar azi tragi spada, o Virtute!
Când stins e-acel rebel popor?
Când ăşti tirani dorm toţi, şi tu te
Lupţi numai cu strigoiul lor?
George Crabbe traducere de Tudor Dorin
