O Memory, thou fond deceiver,
Still importunate and vain,
To former joys recurring ever,
And turning all the past to pain: |
O, Amintire, tu coţcară
Ce tot mă sâcâi în zadar,
Evoci ani veseli iar şi iară,
Şi din ce-a fost faci azi calvar… |
Thou, like the world, th’ oppress’d oppressing,
Thy smiles increase the wretch’s woe:
And he who wants each other blessing
In thee must ever find a foe. |
Faci umilinţa mai umilă,
Când râzi mi-e chinul mai abraş;
Şi, pururi, cui îţi cere milă
Chiar cu dobânzi, te-arăţi vrăjmaş. |

Piping down the valleys wild,
Piping songs of pleasant glee,
On a cloud I saw a child,
And he laughing said to me: |
Fluierând mergeam pe-un runc,
Fluierând de voie bună.
Pe un nor văzui un prunc
Prunc ce-a prins, râzând să-mi spună. |
‘Pipe a song about a Lamb!’
So I piped with merry cheer.
‘Piper, pipe that song again;’
So I piped: he wept to hear. |
„Zi cântare despre Miel!”
Şi-am cântat cu fluiera.
„Înc-o dată zi la fel” –
Eu cântam şi el plângea. |
‘Drop thy pipe, thy happy pipe;
Sing thy songs of happy cheer!’
So I sung the same again,
While he wept with joy to hear. |
„Zi din gură cântecul,
Lasă, lasă fluierul!”
Şi-am cântat din gură acum:
Eu cântam şi el plângea. |
Piper, sit thee down and write
In a book that all may read.’
So he vanish’d from my sight;
And I pluck’d a hollow reed, |
„Scrie-ţi cântecul, fluieraş,
Spre cetire, pe o coală”.
Şi pieri cel copilaş…
Eu luai o trestie goală |
And I made a rural pen,
And I stain’d the water clear,
And I wrote my happy songs
Every child may joy to hear. |
Şi-am cioplit condei din ea,
Şi cerneli făcui atunci,
Şi-am scris cântece voioase –
Bucurie pentru prunci. |

What needs my Shakespeare for his honoured bones,
The labor of an age in pilèd stones,
Or that his hallowed relics should be hid
Under a star-ypointing pyramid?
Dear son of Memory, great heir of fame,
What need’st thou such weak witness of thy name?
Thou in our wonder and astonishment
Hast built thyself a live-long monument.
For whilst to th’ shame of slow-endeavouring art,
Thy easy numbers flow, and that each heart
Hath from the leaves of thy unvalued book
Those Delphic lines with deep impression took,
Then thou, our fancy of itself bereaving,
Dost make us marble with too much conceiving;
And so sepúlchred in such pomp dost lie,
That kings for such a tomb would wish to die. |
Îi vom slăvi lui Shakespeare osul sfânt,
Clădindu-i vraf de pietre pe mormânt?
Sau cere-se ca moaştele-i să stea
Sub piramida care-mpunge-n stea?
Moştenitor al faimei, te îmbie
Asemenea plăpândă mărturie?
Mirarea şi uimirea-ne nu-s oare
Statuia ta mereu dăinuitoare?
În ciuda artei cea cu trudnic pas
Curg stihurile tale, şi popas
În inimi face delficul tău vers
Din cartea ta cu slova de neşters.
Lăsându-ne de fantezie goi,
Ne faci de marmur’ stane tu pe noi;
Şi-astfel, atât ţi-e cripta de măreaţă,
Încât şi regi o ar plăti cu-o viaţă. |

Cyriack, whose grandsire on the royal bench
Of British Themis, with no mean applause,
Pronounced, and in his volumes taught, our laws,
Which others at their bar so often wrench,
Today deep thoughts resolve with me to drench
In mirth that after no repenting draws;
Let Euclid rest, and Archimedes pause,
And what the Swede intend, and what the French.
To measure life learn thou betimes, and know
Toward solid good what leads the nearest way;
For other things mild Heaven a time ordains,
And disapproves that care, though wise in show,
That with superfluous burden loads the day,
And, when God sends a cheerful hour, refrains. |
Cyriack, os din sfesnicul regesc
Ce pe Tamisa – mult aplaudat –
Britane legi a scris şi-a proclamat,
Ce prea des alţii le răstălmăcesc;
Profundul gând azi scaldă-ţi, te poftesc,
În hazul niciodată regretat…
Destul pe Arhimed l-ai cercetat
Şi „planul” suedez ori franţuzesc.
Degrabă viaţa-nvaţă s-o măsori
Spre-a şti spre ţintă drumul lesnicios;
Azi altceva meneşte blândul cer:
Jos grijile (cu rost doar uneori),
Ce cu poveri ne-ncarcă de prisos,
Şi care, când Cel Sfânt e vesel, pier. |

To-night retired, the queen of heaven
With young Endymion stays;
And now to Hesper it is given
Awhile to rule the vacant sky,
Till she shall to her lamp supply
A stream of brighter rays. |
E seară… Doamna-Bolţii, sus,
Vrea cu Endimion să mai stea;
Stăpân e încă Hesperus
Acum pe-al cerului pustiu,
Pân’ ce din vatra ei mai viu
Ne lumina-va ea. |
