Far in the sea to the west of Spain
There is a land that we call Cokaygne;
Under God’s heaven no other land
Such wealth and goodness has in hand
Though paradise be merry and bright,
Cokaygne is yet a fairer sight.
For what is there in paradise
But grass and flowers and green rice? |
În larg, la asfinţit de Spaygne,
E un ţinut numit Cokaygne.
Nu vei afla în lumea toată
Ţară mai mândră şi mai bogată.
E vesel raiul, luminos,
Dar în Cokaygne e mai frumos:
Afar’ de flori şi-un verde plai,
Ce alta se găseşte-n rai? |

Mi-ar place să mă fac păstor de fulgi,
Să am în grijă turme mari de-omăt
Pe care să le port prin ceruri lungi
Şi să le-aduc mai albe îndărăt. |
I wish I were a herder of snowflakes
I’d like to have large snow flocks in my care
Which I shall have to drive across long skies
And bring them whiter, purer, back from there. |
În nopţi clinchetitoare să stau şi să contemplu
Singurătatea lumii şi plânsul ei enorm
Reverberat în nouri ca-n murii unui templu
Pe când viaţa-mi trece şi turmele îmi dorm. |
And pause and contemplate on tinkling nights
The moon’s seduction, her enormous weep
Echoed by clouds as by a temple’s walls,
While my life passes and my white flocks sleep. |
S-aştept să vină vara să-mi răpună
Mieii sortiţi spre setea dulcii hume
Şi-n transhumanţa sfântă să curgem împreună
Mulţi, fără de prihană, dar anume. |
And wait till summer then will sacrifice
My lambkins destined to the sweet clay’s claim,
While in the holy transhumance we merge
Silent and guileless yet towards and aim. |

Lacrimile mele curg dintr-un izvor
ascuns adânc în nemişcarea ta.
Ele se rostogolesc, nu se nimără,
nu se privesc unele pe altele. |
The tears welling up in my eyes
spring from the rock of your silence.
They burst forth, beyound count:
they never face each other. |
Desculţe şi oarbe se ciocnesc între ele,
dar, uneori, încremenesc
iscând un lumini; când tu apari
şi vii spre mine surâzând prin lacrimi. |
Nakedly, blindly, they clash:
and yet at times they halt
in some sort of clearing
as you move closer, smiling through the tears. |

Când am fost ură am fost mare,
Dar, astăzi, cu desăvârşire
Sunt mare, că mă simt iubire,
Sunt mare, căci mă simt uitare. |
When I was hatred I was great,
While I, today, all things above,
Am great – great for I feel I’m love,
Great for with Lethe I share the fate. |
Eşti mare când n-ai îndurare,
Dar te ridici mai sus de fire
Când ţi-este inima iubire,
Când ţi-este sufletul iertare. |
Yes, mercilessness makes you great,
But high you fly, high like a dove
When nothing is your heart but love,
When mercy does your soul elate. |
Ştiu: toate sunt o-ndurerare,
Prin viaţă trecem în neştire,
Dar mângâierea e-n iubire,
De-ar fi restriştea cât de mare,
Şi înălţarea e-n iertare. |
I know: all things bear sorrow’s weight,
Through life in ignorance we rove,
But every solace is in love,
And even if distress be great,
Elation is: forgive, forget. |

E vremea rozelor ce mor,
Mor în grădini, şi mor şi-n mine –
Ş-au fost atât de viaţă pline,
Şi azi se sting aşa uşor. |
It is the time when roses die,
They die in gardens, and in me –
They were so full of life and glee,
And now they droop with a faint sigh. |
În tot, se simte un fior.
O jale e în orişicine.
E vremea rozelor ce mor –
Mor în grădini, şi mor şi-n mine. |
Through everything cold shivers fly.
Despondency’s in all we see.
It is the time when roses die –
They die in gardens, and in me. |
Pe sub amurgu-ntristător,
Curg vălmăşaguri de suspine,
Şi-n marea noapte care vine
Duioase-şi pleacă fruntea lor –
E vremea rozelor ce mor. |
Beneath the dismal twilight sky
There eddies many a faint sigh;
And towards the long night to be
They gently bend their heads so shy –
It is the time when roses die. |

Huliţi au fost romanii
de unii învăţaţi din vremi mai nouă
că metafizică n-ar fi creat
ca alte glorioase seminţii,
doar apeducte, colisee, foruri, drumuri,
eterna urbe, castre şi troiane de hotar.
Huliţi au fost romanii
că numai case-ar fi clădit, cu atrii
primind de sus lumina
şi-avertisment ţinând pe praguri: cave canem. |
Abused have been the Romans
by certain scholars of more recent times
for not creating metaphysics
like other glorious nations,
but only aqueducts, roads, colosseums, forums,
the eternal city, castra, border, earthwork.
Abused have been the Romans
for building only houses, with atria
receiving daylight from above,
and with the warning on their doorsills: cave canem. |
