When my mother died I was very young,
And my father sold me while yet my tongue
Could scarcely cry ” ‘weep! ‘weep! ‘weep! ‘weep!”
So your chimneys I sweep amd in soot I sleep. |
Când se stinse mama, eram încă mic
Şi-abia „vai! vai! vai!” îngăimam peltic;
There’s little Tom Dacre, who cried when his head
That curled like a lamb’s back, was shaved, so I said,
„Hush, Tom! never mind it, for when your head’s bare,
You know that the soot cannot spoil your white hair.” |
And so he was quiet, and that very night,
As Tom was a-sleeping he had such a sight!
That thousands of sweepers, Dick, Joe, Ned, and Jack,
Were all of them locked up in coffins of black; |
Potolit, Tom pleşul n-a mai zis nici pâs,
Şi… poftim la noapte ce-i năzare-n vis:
Dick, Joe, Ned hornarii, Jack şi înc-o mie,
Toţi şedeam la păstru în negre sicrie. |
And by came an Angel who had a bright key,
And he opened the coffins amd set them all free;
Then down a green plain, leaping, laughing they run,
And wash in a river and shine in the Sun. |
Din coşciuge-afară drumul să le deie;
Then naked and white, all their bags left behind,
They rise upon clouds, and sport in the wind.
And the Angel told Tom, if he’d be a good boy,
He’d have God for his father & never want joy. |
Sculele îşi lasă şi-apoi albi cum sunt
Saltă goi pe nouri, ţopăie pe vânt…
Îngerul: „Tom, dacă eşti băiat cuminte,
Fii voios, chiar Domnul îţi va fi părinte!” |
And so Tom awoke; and we rose in the dark
And got with our bags and our brushes to work.
Though the morning was cold, Tom was happy and warm;
So if all do their duty, they need not fear harm. |

My mother bore me in the southern wild,
And I am black, but O! my soul is white;
White as an angel is the English child:
But I am black as if bereav’d of light. |
Eu sunt copilul sudului idiot!
Sunt negru – dar alb e sufletul meu.
Copilul de englez lumină-i tot!
Dar eu sunt negru, n-am lumină eu. |

Tyger Tyger, burning bright,
In the forests of the night;
What immortal hand or eye,
Could frame thy fearful symmetry? |
Tigru, tigru care arzi
În ai nopţii codri-nalţi,
Cine-a pus a lui vecie
În temuta-ţi simetrie? |
In what distant deeps or skies.
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand, dare seize the fire? |
Pe ce pisc, pe care văi
Arse foc din ochii tăi?
Focul, spre ce culme duce?
E vreo mână să-l apuce? |
And what shoulder, and what art,
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand? and what dread feet? |
Inima, puteri de peşteri
Ţi-au durat-o? Sau ce meşteri?
Bate numai – şi îndată
Totu-i fugă-nfricoşată. |
What the hammer? what the chain,
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp,
Dare its deadly terrors clasp! |
Lanţ a fost, ciocan, ilău,
De-a croit creierul tău?
Cine-a strâns, cine-ndrăzneşte,
Spaima ucigaşă-n cleşte? |
When the stars threw down their spears
And water’d heaven with their tears:
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee? |
Stelele cu lănci aruncă
Sau e-n lacrimi bolta-adâncă?
Cel ce te-a creat, la fel
A surâs creând pe miel? |
Tyger Tyger burning bright,
In the forests of the night:
What immortal hand or eye,
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry? |
Tigru, tigru care arzi
În ai nopţii codri-nalţi,
Cine-a săgetat vecie
În temuta-ţi simetrie? |

Piping down the valleys wild,
Piping songs of pleasant glee,
On a cloud I saw a child,
And he laughing said to me: |
Fluierând mergeam pe-un runc,
Fluierând de voie bună.
Pe un nor văzui un prunc
Prunc ce-a prins, râzând să-mi spună. |
‘Pipe a song about a Lamb!’
So I piped with merry cheer.
‘Piper, pipe that song again;’
So I piped: he wept to hear. |
„Zi cântare despre Miel!”
Şi-am cântat cu fluiera.
„Înc-o dată zi la fel” –
Eu cântam şi el plângea. |
‘Drop thy pipe, thy happy pipe;
Sing thy songs of happy cheer!’
So I sung the same again,
While he wept with joy to hear. |
„Zi din gură cântecul,
Lasă, lasă fluierul!”
Şi-am cântat din gură acum:
Eu cântam şi el plângea. |
Piper, sit thee down and write
In a book that all may read.’
So he vanish’d from my sight;
And I pluck’d a hollow reed, |
„Scrie-ţi cântecul, fluieraş,
Spre cetire, pe o coală”.
Şi pieri cel copilaş…
Eu luai o trestie goală |
And I made a rural pen,
And I stain’d the water clear,
And I wrote my happy songs
Every child may joy to hear. |
Şi-am cioplit condei din ea,
Şi cerneli făcui atunci,
Şi-am scris cântece voioase –
Bucurie pentru prunci. |

I went to the Garden of Love,
And saw what I never had seen:
A Chapel was built in the midst,
Where I used to play on the green.
And the gates of this Chapel were shut,
And `Thou shalt not‘ writ over the door;
So I turn‘d to the Garden of Love,
That so many sweet flowers bore,
And I saw it was filled with graves,
And tomb-stones where flowers should be:
And Priests in black gowns were walking their rounds,
And binding with briars my joys and desires. |
Am fost în Grădina Iubirii
Şi-am văzut ce nicicând n-am văzut:
O capelă zidită în iarba
Unde mă jucam la-nceput.
Şi pe poarta închisă-a capelei
Era-nscrisul „Să nu…” şi „Să nu…”
Şi atunci m-am întors în grădina
Ce flori minunate avu.
Plină-i acum cu morminte
Şi pietre, unde altcândva flori
Şi preoţi în negre vestminte
Cu mohor îmi legau orice dor. |
