„Ce e amorul?” de Mihai Eminescu

Ce e amorul? E un lung
Prilej pentru durere,
Căci mii de lacrimi nu-i ajung
Şi tot mai multe cere.
What is love ? A lifetime spent
Of days that pain does fill,
That thousand tears can’t content,
But asks for tears still.
De-un semn în treacăt de la ea
El sufletul ţi-l leagă,
Încât să n-o mai poţi uita
Viaţa ta întreagă.
With but a little glance coquet
Your soul it knows to tie,
That of its spell you can’t forget
Until the day you die.
Dar încă de te-aşteaptă-n prag
În umbră de unghere,
De se-ntâlneşte drag cu drag
Cum inima ta cere
Upon your threshold does it stand,
In every nook conspire,
That you may whisper hand in hand
Your tale of heart’s aspire.
Dispar şi ceruri şi pământ
Şi pieptul tău se bate,
Şi totu-atârnă de-un cuvânt
Şoptit pe jumătate.
Till fades the very earth and sky,
Your heart completely broken,
And all the world hangs on a sigh,
A word but partly spoken.
Te urmăreşte săptămâni
Un pas făcut alene,
O dulce strângere de mâni,
Un tremurat de gene.
It follows you for weeks and weeks
And in your soul assembles
The memory of blushing cheeks
And eyelash fair that trembles.
Te urmăresc luminători
Ca soarele şi luna,
Şi peste zi de-atâtea ori
Şi noaptea totdeauna.
It comes to you a sudden ray
As though of starlight’s spending,
How many and many a time each day
And every night unending.
Căci scris a fost ca viaţa ta
De doru-i să nu-ncapă,
Căci te-a cuprins asemenea
Lianelor din apă.
For of your life has fate decreed
That pain shall it enfold,
As does the clinging water-weed
About a swimmer hold.

„Vântul” de Vasile Alecsandri

Vântul e copil zburdalnic, fără milă, nici mustrare,
Care-mpinge-n rea furtună toate vasele pe mare,
Şi, ca lupul dupa turme, se alungă după nori,
Şi doboară stejari falnici şi desfoaie blânde flori.
A merciless young rascal is the Wind. His chief delight
Is to worry ships at sea with savage storms by day and night,
Like a dog-wolf harrying sheep, he chases clouds and scatters showers,
Lays the stately oak-trees low, and snaps the stems of fragile flowers.

„De ce nu-mi vii” de Mihai Eminescu

Vezi, rândunelele se duc,
Se scutur frunzele de nuc,
S-aşează bruma peste vii —
De ce nu-mi vii, de ce nu-mi vii?
See the swallows quit the eaves
And fall the yellow walnut leaves,
The vines with autumn frost are numb,
Why don’t you come, why don’t you come?
O, vino iar în al meu braţ,
Să te privesc cu mult nesaţ,
Să razim dulce capul meu
De sânul tău, de sânul tău!
Oh, come into my arms’ embrace
That I may gaze upon your face,
And lay my head in grateful rest
Against your breast, against your breast!
Ţi-aduci aminte cum pe-atunci
Când ne plimbam prin văi şi lunci,
Te ridicam de subsuori
De-atâtea ori, de-atâtea ori!
Do you remember when we strayed
The meadows and the secret glade,
I kissed you midst flowering thyme
How many a time, how many a time?
În lumea asta sunt femei
Cu ochi ce izvorăsc scântei…
Dar, oricât ele sunt de sus,
Ca tine nu-s, ca tine nu-s!
Some women on the earth there are
Whose eyes shine as the evening star,
But be their charm no matter what,
Like you they’re not, like you they’re not!
Căci tu înseninezi mereu
Viaţa sufletului meu,
Mai mândră decât orice stea,
Iubita mea, iubita mea!
For you shine in my soul always
More softly than the starlight blaze,
More splendid than the risen sun,
Beloved one, beloved one!
Târzie toamnă e acum,
Se scutur frunzele pe drum,
Şi lanurile sunt pustii…
De ce nu-mi vii, de ce nu-mi vii?
But it is late in autumn now,
The leaves have fallen from the bough,
The fields are bare, the birds are dumb…
Why don’t you come, why don’t you come?

„Sania” de Vasile Alecsandri

Zi cu soare, ger cu stele!… Hai, iubită, la primblare.
Caii muşcă-a lor zăbale, surugiul e călare;
Săniuţa, cuib de iarnă, e cam strimtă pentru doi…
Tu zâmbeşti?… Zâmbirea-ţi zice că e bună pentru noi.
The snow is sparkling in the sun — come, dearest, drive with me,
The horses stamp impatiently, and champ their bits with glee;
My sledge is small — a winter nest — too small, maybe, for two.
You smile, my love? That means ‘tis large enough for me and you.

„Daniel Sihastru” de Dimitrie Bolintineanu

Sub o râpă stearpă, pe un râu în spume,
Unde un sihastru a fugit de lume,
Cu vărsarea serii un străin sosi.
— „Ştefan al Moldovei vine a-ţi vorbi!”
— „Ştefan al Moldovei, Daniel îi spune,
Să aştepte-afară! Sunt în rugăciune.”
— „Bunule părinte! Sunt rănit şi-nvins;
Însăşi a mea mumă astăzi m-a respins!
Viu să-ţi cer povaţă dacă nu-i mai bine
Turcilor Moldova d-astăzi să se-nchine?”
Daniel Sihastru domnului a zis:
— „Mă înşeală-auzul ori eu am un vis?
Capul ce se pleacă paloşul nu-l taie,
Dar cu umilinţă lanţu-l încovoaie!
Ce e oare traiul, dacă e robit?
Sărbătoare-n care nimeni n-a zâmbit?
Viaţa şi robia nu pot sta-mpreună,
Nu e tot-odată pace şi furtună.
Doamne! tu ai dreptul a schimba-n mormânturi
Pentru neatârnare, oameni şi pământuri;
Beneath a barren bank, on a foaming river,
Where a hesychast fled the world,
As evening came a stranger arrived.
— „Stephen of Moldavia has come to speak to you!”
— „Stephen of Moldavia, Daniel tells him,
To wait outside! I am at prayer.”
— „Good father! I am wounded and defeated,
My own mother herself rejected me today!
I have come to seek counsel if it would not be better
For Moldavia henceforth to bow to the Turks?”
Daniel Sihastru said to the prince
— „Does my hearing deceive me or am I dreaming?
The falchion does not cut off the bowed head,
But the chain bends him humiliatingly!
What then is life, if lived in serfdom?
A holiday on which no one smiled?
Life and serfdom cannot coexist,
Peace and a tempest do not happen together.
Prince! you have the right to turn into graves
For freedom, mean and lands;
But you cannot humble them!
You can break them; but not enslave them!
If the hand your sceptre presses on is weak,
Cede your place to a more willing man!
For better to be conquered and praised,
Than a vassal prince in shame!”
După-aceste vorbe, Ştefan strânge-oştire
Şi-nvingând păgânii nalţă-o monastire.
After these words, Stephen gathered his troops
And defeating the pagans raised a monastery.

“Sfârşit de toamnă” de Vasile Alecsandri

Oaspeţii caselor noastre, cocostârci şi rândunele,
Părăsit-au a lor cuiburi ş-au fugit de zile rele;
Cârdurile de cocoare, înşirându-se-n lung zbor,
Pribegit-au urmărite de al nostru jalnic dor.
See, the storks and eke the swallows, of our roofs and eaves the guests,
Fearful of the days that threaten now have vanished from their nests;
And the cranes with flapping pinions ranked in orderly array,
Unheeding vain regrets are flying to the southward far away.
