06 iul.
Sara pe deal buciumul sună cu jale,
Turmele-l urc, stele le scapără-n cale,
Apele plâng, clar izvorând în fântâne;
‘Tis eve on the hillside, the bagpipes are distantly wailing,
Flocks going homewards, and stars o’er the firmament sailing,
Sound of the bubbling spring sorrow’s legend narrating,
And beneath a tall willow for me, dear one, you are waiting. |

01 iun.
Neguri albe, strălucite
Naşte luna argintie,
Ea le scoate peste ape,
Le întinde pe câmpie; |
Sparkling haze, across the heavens
Rising slow the sliver moon,
She has gathered from the water
And upon the pastures strewn. |
S-adun flori în şezătoare
De painjen tort să rumpă,
Şi anină-n haina nopţii
Boabe mari de piatră scumpă. |
In the valley many flowers
On the cobwebs jewels strung,
Countless gems, of countless colours,
On the cloak of evening hung. |
Lângă lac, pe care norii
Au urzit o umbră fină,
Ruptă de mişcări de valuri
Ca de bulgări de lumină, |
O’er the lake the clouds in passing
Cast a soft transparent shade,
Which the ripples rolling boulders
With their radiance invade. |
Dându-şi trestia-ntr-o parte,
Stă copila lin plecată,
Trandafiri aruncă roşii
Peste unda fermecată. |
Came at night a little maiden
Silently the reeds among,
And a rose of flaming scarlet
On the water surface flung. |
Ca să vad-un chip, se uită
Cum aleargă apa-n cercuri,
Căci vrăjit de mult e lacul
De-un cuvânt al Sfintei Miercuri; |
For her own sweet image gazing,
Marvelled how the ripples stirred…
Ay, that lake is long enchanted
By the Saint Mercuri’s word. |
Ca să iasă chipu-n faţă,
Trandafiri aruncă tineri,
Căci vrăjiţi sunt trandafirii
De-un cuvânt al Sfintei Vineri. |
Flung a rose of flaming scarlet
That the water’s mirror blurred…
Scarlet roses are enchanted
By the saint Veneri’s word. |
Ea se uită… Păru-i galben,
Faţa ei lucesc în lună,
Iar în ochii ei albaştri
Toate basmele s-adună. |
Long she gazes. Hair soft golden,
O’er her face the moon’s pale light,
While within her eyes of violet
All times fairy-tales unite. |

– „Iar te-ai cufundat în stele
Şi în nori şi-n ceruri nalte?
De nu m-ai uita încalte,
Sufletul vieţii mele. |
„You ride the clouds and range the sky
Your net about the stars cast;
But do remember dear at last
My soul can never soar so high. |

Cu perdelele lăsate,
Şed la masa mea de brad,
Focul pâlpâie în sobă,
Iară eu pe gânduri cad. |
With the curtains drawn together,
At my table of rough wood,
And the firelight flickering softly,
Do I fall to thoughtful mood. |

Făclie de veghe pe umezi morminte,
Un sunet de clopot în orele sfinte,
Un vis ce îşi moaie aripa-n amar,
Astfel ai trecut de al lumii hotar. |
Two candles, tall sentry, beside an earth mound,
A dream with wings broken that trail to the ground,
Loud flung from the belfry calamitous chime…
‘Tis thus that you passed o’er the bound’ries of time. |

16 mart.
O’er the plain whose breast is verdant with the quiv’ring corn-blades’ sheen
Comes a shadow slowly creeping, slightly darkening the green,
Spreading, as an eager streamlet, that was erst by frost congealed,
Now at last its banks o’erflowing fills and floods the neighbouring field. |
E umbra unor nouri albii, uşori, mărunţi
Ce lunecă sub soare, clădind un lanţ de munţi;
‘Tis the shadow of some cloudlets, white and fleecy, fraught with rain,
That come creeping ‘neath the sunshine building up a mountain chain;
With a faint mysterious murmur, like an all- but-stifled sigh.
They steal onward, darkly, dimly, till a flash lights up the sky! |
Hark! the heavens’ bellowing thunder ! Dost thou hear the joyful cries
That, responding to the signal, from th’ awakened earth arise Î
Now she knows herself enfranchised from long winter’s stern control;
Youthful vigour swells her bosom — buoyant gladness fills her soul. |
As she bids a joyous welcome to the tidings from the West!
See! a flight of stately eagles, high above the mountain’s crest,
Onward swooping pause to listen to the heavens’ mighty strain,
That proclaims amid the cloudland, „Sweet Springtime is come again”. |
