„Halcyon Days” de Walt Whitman

Not from successful love alone,
Nor wealth, nor honor’d middle age, nor victories of politics or war;
But as life wanes, and all the turbulent passions calm,
As gorgeous, vapory, silent hues cover the evening sky,
As softness, fulness, rest, suffuse the frame, like freshier, balmier air,
As the days take on a mellower light, and the apple at last hangs
really finish’d and indolent-ripe on the tree,
Then for the teeming quietest, happiest days of all!
The brooding and blissful halcyon days!
Vei avea zile senine.
zile dintre toate,
Liniştitele şi fericitele zile senine.

„On the Dunes” de Sara Teasdale

If there is any life when death is over,
These tawny beaches will know much of me,
I shall come back, as constant and as changeful
As the unchanging, many-colored sea.
De este viaţă când se-ncheie moartea,
M-or recunoaşte plajele-aurii
Când, precum marea – veşnic schimbătoare
Şi veşnic ea – la ţărm voi reveni.
If life was small, if it has made me scornful,
Forgive me; I shall straighten like a flame
In the great calm of death, and if you want me
Stand on the sea-ward dunes and call my name.

E lege pentru mine de aur pur şi greu;
Din groapa mea zbucni-va o flacără târzie;
Atunci întreaga lume va desluşi, uimită,
Crescând misterioasă a noastră poezie,
What is henceforth the use of spirit, phantasy and fame…
You gone, everything dies in a cold glitter.
For the wounded eagle wings are burdens only
Struggling in useless and increased agony.
And I’ll submit… The verdicts you’ll pronounce
Are to me laws of purest, heavy gold
And sufferings by you inflicted, new temptations,
Prodigious guardian of my genius!
The age-long mists may swallow me anew…
Out of my grace a late flame will bursts;
Astonished, the whole world shall witness then
Mysteriously growing our poetry
In pain and fervour like a love-child
By an unknown father secretly begotten!

„The Ecstasy” de John Donne

Where, like a pillow on a bed,
A pregnant bank swell‘d up, to rest
The violet‘s reclining head,
Sat we two, one another‘s best.
Acolo unde, ca o pernă-n pat,
Poiana se umfla pentru-a susține
Al purei violete cap plecat,
Unul comoară celuilalt, cu tine

„Invictus” de William Ernest Henley

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
Trecând de noaptea grea din jurul meu,
Neagră ca iadul, fără de sfârşit,
Îi mulţumesc oricărui Dumnezeu
Pentru sufletul meu necucerit.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
În gheara sorţii strâns fără cruţare
Nu am dat înapoi şi n-am strigat
Lovit de întâmplările amare
Capul mi-e-nsângerat, dar nu plecat.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
Dincolo de blesteme şi de lacrimi,
Pe-acest tărâm de umbră subjugat,
În anii plini de-ameninţări şi patimi
Sunt şi voi fi la fel, neînfricat.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
Nu mai contează cât de aspru-i drumul,
Ce liste cu pedepse vin mereu,
Eu, azi, al sorţii mele sunt stăpânul –
Sunt căpitanul sufletului meu.

„Puericultura” de Şerban Foarţă

Acum, când scade rata
natalităţii-n ţară,
şi vindem prunci de gata
pagânilor de-afară,
As births have been declining
on our land indeed,
and we have been consigning
to heathens our breed,
ni-i dor de vremea-n care
n-aveam habar de planning
şi, la răstimpuri rare,
facând amor în trening,
we miss the old-time dawning
when innocence was blessed,
when no one knew of planning
and we, completely dressed,
cu plapumile puse
în cap, până-n aprilie,
şi-n şoaptă, ca să nu se
audă în familie
made love under the cover
of our goosedown quilt,
(like any old-time lover
we shared a sense of guilt)
(sau la vecinii care,
habar n-aveau de planning,
şi, la răstimpuri rare,
făceau amor în trening
unheard by nosy neighbors
(who planning knew nought of,
and never did us favors,
but sometimes did make love
sau lenjuri anti-baby,
pe înfundate, ca să
nu-i dibuie efebii
şi fetele din casă), –
in anti-baby linen,
and yes, completely dressed,
restrained and barely grinnin’
to not awake the rest).
eram ceva mai plodnici
şi cu prasilă multă…
Pentru că, dragi logodnici,
copiii nu rezultă
Those were the times of wonder,
of „breed or disappear”…
So, those of you who ponder
betrothing someone dear,
din liberul arbitru,
ci din fatalitate, –
după ce bei un litru
de proastă calitate.
remember this: the reason
why babies are put forth
is not free will (it isn’t!)
but wine of little worth.
