Thou hast made me endless, such is thy pleasure. This frail vessel thou emptiest again and again, and fillest it ever with fresh life.
This little flute of a reed thou hast carried over hills and dales,
and hast breathed through it melodies eternally new.
At the immortal touch of thy hands my little heart loses its limits
in joy and gives birth to utterance ineffable.
Thy infinite gifts come to me only on these very small hands of
mine. Ages pass, and still thou pourest, and still there is room to fill. |

Those pretty wrongs that liberty commits
When I am sometime absent from thy heart,
Thy beauty and thy years full well befits,
For still temptation follows where thou art. |
Măruntele păcate-n care cade
inima ta, de-o părăsesc o clipă,
li-s pe măsura anilor tăi poate,
ispitele când te urmează-n pripă. |
Gentle thou art, and therefore to be won;
Beauteous thou art, therefore to be assailed;
And when a woman woos, what woman’s son
Will sourly leave her till he have prevailed? |
Eşti nobil, deci eşti prada cea de seamă,
frumos, stârneşti asalturile numa’
şi ce bărbat dacă muierea-l cheamă
o va lăsa fără să-şi facă suma? |
Ay me, but yet thou mightst my seat forbear,
And chide thy beauty and thy straying youth,
Who lead thee in their riot even there
Where thou art forced to break a two-fold troth: |
Vai mie! -ai fi putut să-mi uiţi conacul
să-ţi mustri frumuseţea şi-acel farmec
ce te-a mânat într-ânsul să-ţi faci veacul
şi-ajunse două jurăminţi să darme: |
Hers, by thy beauty tempting her to thee,
Thine, by thy beauty being false to me. |
Al ei, prin vraja împlinind ispite
al tău, prin vraja care mă ucide… |

Mi se întâmplă să ţip,
Numai în somn,
Şi-nspăimântată de-ndrăzneală
Mă trezesc –
În liniştea disciplinată a nopţii,
Încerc să aud
Ţipete-n somnul vecin.
Dar vecinii-nţelepţi
Nu ţipă decât când sunt siguri
Că visează că dorm,
În somnul din somn,
Unde nimeni n-aude
Îşi dau drumul la gură.
Ce liber vacarm
Trebuie să fie acolo,
În somnul din somn. |
I happen to cry out,
Only when asleep,
And frightened by my own daring
I wake,
In the well-disciplined silence of night,
And try to hear
Cries from neighbours’ sleep.
But the neighbours are wise
Crying out only when they’re sure
That they dream they’re asleep.
In the sleep within sleep
Where no one can hear,
They give way to cries.
What free uproar
Must be there,
In the sleep within sleep. |

When to the session of sweet silent thought
I summon up remembrance of things past,
I sigh the lack of many a thing I sought,
And with old woes new wail my dear time’s waste.
|
Când la taifasul gândurilor bune
le chem la mine, glasuri din trecut,
deplâng speranţe ce-n deşertăciune
s-au stins şi timpu-mi jelui, cel pierdut. |
Then can I drown an eye unused to flow
For precious friends hid in death’s dateless night,
And weep afresh love’s long-since-cancelled woe,
And moan th’ expense of many a vanished sight. |
De lacrimă străin, ochiul îi plânge
pe bunii prieteni ce în moarte-s duşi,
– iubiri cu chipuri şterse – şi-i răsfrânge
în lacrimă, pe cei de după uşi… |
Then can I grieve at grievances foregone,
And heavily from woe to woe tell o’er
The sad account of fore-bemoaned moan,
Which I new pay as if not paid before. |
Mă mai frământă pierderile câte
le-am încercat cândva şi seamă dau,
plătesc din nou imagini mohorâte
ce, vii, odată mă înconjurau. |
But if the while I think on thee, dear friend,
All losses are restored, and sorrows end. |
De mă gândesc la tine, prieten drag,
tot ce-a furat, mi-ntoarce timpu-n prag. |
