I fear not what has not been
Nor what fails to come when called
Were it to be it would require no prodding
Rather it would come and we would once anew rejoice being
And what heck of a moth would come out of the cocoon
To dance with Death around the kitchen lamp
Where are treaties to be found alas they are all void
While the sturgeon was still jumping in the sink
The golden fish gobbled up the silver
Let flowers bloom and turn to dust
Then let us go for go we must
What do we strive for? Thought alone!

O’er the plain whose breast is verdant with the quiv’ring corn-blades’ sheen
Comes a shadow slowly creeping, slightly darkening the green,
Spreading, as an eager streamlet, that was erst by frost congealed,
Now at last its banks o’erflowing fills and floods the neighbouring field.
E umbra unor nouri albii, uşori, mărunţi
Ce lunecă sub soare, clădind un lanţ de munţi;
‘Tis the shadow of some cloudlets, white and fleecy, fraught with rain,
That come creeping ‘neath the sunshine building up a mountain chain;
With a faint mysterious murmur, like an all- but-stifled sigh.
They steal onward, darkly, dimly, till a flash lights up the sky!
Hark! the heavens’ bellowing thunder ! Dost thou hear the joyful cries
That, responding to the signal, from th’ awakened earth arise Î
Now she knows herself enfranchised from long winter’s stern control;
Youthful vigour swells her bosom — buoyant gladness fills her soul.
As she bids a joyous welcome to the tidings from the West!
See! a flight of stately eagles, high above the mountain’s crest,
Onward swooping pause to listen to the heavens’ mighty strain,
That proclaims amid the cloudland, „Sweet Springtime is come again”.

„Dance Figure” de Ezra Pound

Dark-eyed,
O woman of my dreams,
Ivory sandalled,
There is none like thee among the dancers,
None with swift feet.
Ochi negri,
O, doamnă din visu-mi,
În sandale de fildeş,
Pereche nu ai între dănţuitoare,
Nu-s glezne mai iuţi.

„The Passing Strange” de John Masefield

Out of the earth to rest or range
Perpetual in perpetual change,
The unknown passing through the strange.

Pământul n-are margini şi nici cerurile prag.
With the serenity of age’s clear pulp I smile upon you youth,
Face boldly your proud beauty,
Your starlike eyes which lead astray
I resist with a strong mind wherein they melt.
My spirit I throw in, I do not kiss your lips,
Bent as upon a flower, I rend you and your perfume I breathe,
You are no more a flesh and blood creation
But the chalice wherefrom I sip life, receive grace.
My years I do not count, sap doesn’t hang upon prime:
With my phantasy’s power I seize what I endear,
I harness passion and virtue to the exalted poem
In which, with no trace of senescent dust, I force you:
To the magician earth has no bounds,
Nor has the sky a threshold.

„Ce e amorul?” de Mihai Eminescu

Ce e amorul? E un lung
Prilej pentru durere,
Căci mii de lacrimi nu-i ajung
Şi tot mai multe cere.
What is love ? A lifetime spent
Of days that pain does fill,
That thousand tears can’t content,
But asks for tears still.
De-un semn în treacăt de la ea
El sufletul ţi-l leagă,
Încât să n-o mai poţi uita
Viaţa ta întreagă.
With but a little glance coquet
Your soul it knows to tie,
That of its spell you can’t forget
Until the day you die.
Dar încă de te-aşteaptă-n prag
În umbră de unghere,
De se-ntâlneşte drag cu drag
Cum inima ta cere
Upon your threshold does it stand,
In every nook conspire,
That you may whisper hand in hand
Your tale of heart’s aspire.
Dispar şi ceruri şi pământ
Şi pieptul tău se bate,
Şi totu-atârnă de-un cuvânt
Şoptit pe jumătate.
Till fades the very earth and sky,
Your heart completely broken,
And all the world hangs on a sigh,
A word but partly spoken.
Te urmăreşte săptămâni
Un pas făcut alene,
O dulce strângere de mâni,
Un tremurat de gene.
It follows you for weeks and weeks
And in your soul assembles
The memory of blushing cheeks
And eyelash fair that trembles.
Te urmăresc luminători
Ca soarele şi luna,
Şi peste zi de-atâtea ori
Şi noaptea totdeauna.
It comes to you a sudden ray
As though of starlight’s spending,
How many and many a time each day
And every night unending.
Căci scris a fost ca viaţa ta
De doru-i să nu-ncapă,
Căci te-a cuprins asemenea
Lianelor din apă.
For of your life has fate decreed
That pain shall it enfold,
As does the clinging water-weed
About a swimmer hold.
Mihai Eminescu traducere de Corneliu M. Popescu
