„La Belle Dame Sans Merci” de John Keats

Oh what can ail thee, knight-at-arms,
Alone and palely loitering?
The sedge has withered from the lake,
And no birds sing.
„Ce suferinţă, cavaler în zea.
Te face, palid, să te pierzi?
În lac rogoz şi trestii s-au uscat,
Cu păsări nu te mai dezmierzi.

„Ode to a Nightingale” de John Keats

My heart aches, and a drowsy numbness pains
My sense, as though of hemlock I had drunk,
Or emptied some dull opiate to the drains
One minute past, and Lethe-wards had sunk:
‘Tis not through envy of thy happy lot,
But being too happy in thine happiness, –
That thou, light-winged Dryad of the trees,
In some melodious plot
Of beechen green and shadows numberless,
Singest of summer in full-throated ease.
Mi-i somn în simţuri… Inima mă doare
Şi pare-se cucută doar şi opiu
De-o clipă c-am băut cu însetare;
M-afund în Lethe, de neant m-apropiu.
Nu pizmuindu-ţi neamu-n aste ore,
Ci-n fericirea ta prea fericită,
Driada-n crâng, cu aripi jucăuşe,
În melodii sonore,
Prin fagii verzi, de umbre-nvăluită,
Cânţi vara din cu drag umflată guşe.

„I Shall Forget You Presently, My Dear” de Edna Saint Vincent Millay

I shall forget you presently, my dear,
So make the most of this, your little day,
Your little month, your little half a year,
Ere I forget, or die, or move away,
Presimt c-am să te uit curând, iubite.
Profită deci de scurta-ţi dimineaţă,
de anii-ţi iuţi, de lunile-ţi grăbite,
până mă mut din zonă – ori din viaţă.
And we are done forever; by and by
I shall forget you, as I said, but now,
If you entreat me with your loveliest lie
I will protest you with my favorite vow.
Adio bucurii şi suferinţe.
Am să te uit. (Vezi supra.) Dar ‘nainte,
vrăjeşte-mă cu dulci făgăduinţe,
iar eu voi riposta cu jurăminte.
I would indeed that love were longer-lived,
And vows were not so brittle as they are,
But so it is, and nature has contrived
To struggle on without a break thus far,
Mi-ar fi plăcut să fac ce-mi zise gura,
şi-amorul să-mi dureze cât destinul.
Dar vezi, aşa ne-a rânduit natura,
să treacă omul, nu să treacă chinul.
Whether or not we find what we are seeking
Is idle, biologically speaking.
Şi dacă ne-mplinim după speranţă
e biologic fără importanţă.

„The Garden of Love” de William Blake

I went to the Garden of Love,
And saw what I never had seen:
A Chapel was built in the midst,
Where I used to play on the green.
And the gates of this Chapel were shut,
And `Thou shalt not‘ writ over the door;
So I turn‘d to the Garden of Love,
That so many sweet flowers bore,
And I saw it was filled with graves,
And tomb-stones where flowers should be:
And Priests in black gowns were walking their rounds,
And binding with briars my joys and desires.
Am fost în Grădina Iubirii
Şi-am văzut ce nicicând n-am văzut:
O capelă zidită în iarba
Unde mă jucam la-nceput.
Şi pe poarta închisă-a capelei
Era-nscrisul „Să nu…” şi „Să nu…”
Şi atunci m-am întors în grădina
Ce flori minunate avu.
Plină-i acum cu morminte
Şi pietre, unde altcândva flori
Şi preoţi în negre vestminte
Cu mohor îmi legau orice dor.

„Ce te legeni…” (În formă populară) de Mihai Eminescu

– „Ce te legeni, codrule,
Fără ploaie, fără vânt,
Cu crengile la pământ?”
– „De ce nu m-aş legăna,
Dacă trece vremea mea!
Ziua scade, noaptea creşte
Şi frunzişul mi-l răreşte.
Bate vântul frunza-n dungă –
Cântăreţii mi-i alungă;
Bate vântul dintr-o parte –
Iarna-i ici, vara-i departe.
Şi de ce să nu mă plec,
Dacă păsările trec!
Peste vârf de rămurele
Trec în stoluri rândunele,
Ducând gândurile mele
Şi norocul meu cu ele.
Şi se duc pe rând pe rând,
Zarea lumii-ntunecând,
Şi se duc ca clipele,
Scuturând aripele,
Şi mă lasă pustiit,
Veştejit şi amorţit
Şi cu doru-mi singurel,
De mă-ngân numai cu el!”
„Why do you wail, o forest trees,
Forest, without rain or breeze,
Your branches ill at ease?”
„How indeed should I not wail
When the hours of summer fail!
Nights grow longer, days get short,
On my branches few leaves caught,
And the winds with bitter sword
Drive my chorister abroad;
Autumn winds that forest flay,
Winter near, spring far away.
How indeed should I not groan
When my singing birds have flown,
And across the frozen sky
Flocks of swallows hurry by,
And with them my fancies fly
Leaving me alone to sigh;
Hurry on as time in flight
Turning day half into night,
Time that o’er the forest rings
With a fluttering of wings…
And they pass and leave me cold,
Nude and shivering and old;
For my thoughts with them have flown,
And with them my gladness gone!”

„The Little Black Boy” de William Blake

My mother bore me in the southern wild,
And I am black, but O, my soul is white!
White as an angel is the English child,
But I am black, as if bereaved of light.
Măicuţa-n sudul crâncen mi-a dat viaţă,
Şi-s negru, dar la suflet, crin curat!
Copilul de englez e alb la faţă,
Eu, negru: de lumină par furat.
