Poate că spre tine-ndreptasem acest gând
devenit cuvânt
Poate că spre tine-ndreptasem acest cuvânt
devenit sânge
Poate că spre tine-ndreptasem acest sânge
devenit făptură
Poate că spre tine-ndreptasem
această iubire şi ură
Poate că spre tine-ndreptasem
această nefiinţă
pe care tu ai primit-o
şi tăcând zâmbind şi privind
ai învăţat-o să tacă
(deci să strige)
să zâmbească
(deci să plângă)
să privească
(deci să uite)
poate că tu eşti viaţa ei
(de vreme ce-i eşti
moartea uitării). |
Perhaps it was towards you that I had directed this thoughts
that turned into a word
Perhaps it was towards you that I had directed this word
that turned into a blood
Perhaps it was towards you that I had directed this blood
turned into a creature
Perhaps it was towards you that I had directed
this love and hate
Perhaps it was towards you that I had directed
this non-being
which you accepted
and keeping silent smiling and watching
you taught it to keep silent
(that is to yell)
to smile
(that is to cry)
to watch
(that is to forget)
Perhaps you are its life
(since you are to it
the death of oblivion). |

Zburau…
El avea o aripă în stânga,
ea avea o aripă în dreapta,
ca un singur trup între două aripi
zburau…
Respirând între două aripi,
ea – plămânul lui drept,
el – plămânul ei stâng,
printr-un cer saturat de aur,
ca o lungă suveică de aur,
ca o cheie de aur descuind spaţii de aur,
zburau….
prin aur…
zburau…
prin aur…
zburau… |
Flying they were –
He had a wing on his left,
she had a wing on her right,
like one body between two wings
they were flying –
Flying they were –
Between their two wings breathing in
she – his right lung,
he – her left lung,
through a sky saturated with gold,
like a long golden shuttle,
like a golden key opening golden spaces,
they were flying –
through gold –
they were flying –
through gold –
they were flying – |

I used to be like the forest, the windmill, the silent
black unknown crosses at roadsides –
the horses’ shadows at night on lofty Moldavian hills
I favoured – and the faces of singular gods
buried in sand by the sea. How long is it since?
Many a rain must have been, many a blizzard,
many a wall and host must have perished, many a chain
must have fallen,
many an empire burned down, blown to the winds, gone to blazes
before I could say I began to be at long last like myself. |

Morpheus the lively son of deadly sleep,
Witness of life to them that living die,
A prophet oft, and oft an history,
A poet eke, as humors fly or creep,
Since thou in me so sure a power dost keep,
That never I with clos’d-up sense do lie,
But by thy work my Stella I descry,
Teaching blind eyes both how to smile and weep;
Vouchsafe of all acquaintance this to tell:
Whence hast thou ivory, rubies, pearl and gold,
To show her skin, lips, teeth, and head so well?
‘Fool,’ answers he, ‘no Indies such treasures hold,
But from thy heart, while my sire charmeth thee,
Sweet Stella’s image I do steal to me.’ |
Morfeu, fiu viu al somnului de moarte,
Tu, martor vieţii mortului-trăind,
Profet adesea, or poveste fiind,
Poet, cu toane – trist, or vesel foarte;
Cum tu, în mine, cert, păstrezi o parte
Şi-a mele simţuri nu le ştiu dormind,
Prin tine, Stella mea – plângând, zâmbind –
Mi-nvaţă ochii orbi cum să se poarte!
De unde-aduci tu fildeş şi rubine
Şi perle şi-aur, dându-i ei culori:
Ten, buze, dinţi şi păr, atât de bine?!
Tont! – zice – Nici în Indii nu-s comori,
Ca-n inima-ţi, când vraja-ţi creşte-n jur,
De-acolo, chipul Stellei eu ţi-l fur! |

With how sad steps, O Moon, thou climb’st the skies!
How silently, and with how wan a face!
What, may it be that even in heav’nly place
That busy archer his sharp arrows tries!
Sure, if that long-with love-acquainted eyes
Can judge of love, thou feel’st a lover’s case,
I read it in thy looks; thy languish’d grace
To me, that feel the like, thy state descries.
Then, ev’n of fellowship, O Moon, tell me,
Is constant love deem’d there but want of wit?
Are beauties there as proud as here they be?
Do they above love to be lov’d, and yet
Those lovers scorn whom that love doth possess?
Do they call virtue there ungratefulness? |
Eşti tristă, lună, şi precum un fur
Sui treptele ceresculu lăcaş…
Ai crede că pârdalnicul arcaş
Săgeţile-şi trimite şi-n azur!
Surată, dacă ochii ce-s desprinşi
Cu dragostea o pot şi judeca,
Tu-i înţelegi pe cei în mreje prinşi;
Blajină milă-i în privirea ta.
Statornicia faţă de iubite
E şi la voi o faptă de nătâng?
Frumoasele-s la fel de-nchipuite?
Le place-a fi curtate dar îl plâng
Pe-acel care iubeşte ca nebun?
Vrituţii nerecunoştinţă-i spun?

You that do search for every purling spring,
Which from the ribs of old Parnassus flows,
And every flower, not sweet perhaps, which grows
Near thereabouts, into your poesy wring;
You that do dictionary’s method bring
Into your rimes, running in rattling rows;
You that poor Petrarch’s long-deceased woes,
With new-born sighs and denizen’d wit do sing,
You take wrong ways: those far-fet helps be such
As do bewray a want of inward touch:
And sure at length stol’n goods do come to light.
But if (both for your love and skill) your name
You seek to nurse at fullest breasts of Fame,
Stella behold, and then begin to endite. |
Tu, cel ce-adaşti la şopotit izvor,
Ce, din Parnas-bătrânul, curge-n spaţii
Şi orice floare,-amară, fără graţii,
La poezia ta o legi, cu spor,
Tu, care foloseşti aliteraţii,
În rimele-ţi cu tropi clămpănitori,
Ori duhul lui Petrarca-l re-nviori
Cu noi suspine-n englezeşti pulsaţii,
Tu iei un drum greşit: orice-ajutor
Distaină vidul tău interior –
Cu timpul, tot ce-i furt, dai la iveală;
Pentru iubire, doar, şi-a ta-ncropeală,
De-aspiri la sânul Faimei, mai întâi,
Privind la Stella-ncepe să compui! |
