On a starred night Prince Lucifer uprose.
Tired of his dark dominion swung the fiend
Above the rolling ball in cloud part screened,
Where sinners hugged their spectre of repose. |
Prin aştri, noaptea, Lucifer suia.
Scârbit de schiptru-i, se rotea Cel-Rău
Între pământ şi cer, prin sumbrul tău;
Jos, omul cuipeş umbra-i săruta – |
Poor prey to his hot fit of pride were those.
And now upon his western wing he leaned,
Now his huge bulk o’er Afric’s sands careened,
Now the black planet shadowed Arctic snows. |
Sărman prinos trufaşului călău…
Când către veste cârmea cu aripa,
Când, stins planet, gonea spre Africa
Sau arctice zăpezi. – Hăt sus, în hău |
Soaring through wider zones that pricked his scars
With memory of the old revolt from Awe,
He reached a middle height, and at the stars,
Which are the brain of heaven, he looked, and sank.
Around the ancient track marched, rank on rank,
The army of unalterable law. |
Zvâcnind, şi-aduse-aminte ce răni grele
Îl ard de când vru LUI să-i pună stavili,
Şi către-al nopţii creier, către stele
Privind… se scufundă. – Pe vechi făgaşe,
În strânse rânduri-rânduri uriaşe,
Păşea oştirea neclintitei pravili. |

‘I play for Seasons; not Eternities!’
Says Nature, laughing on her way. ‘So must
All those whose stake is nothing more than dust!’
And lo, she wins, and of her harmonies
She is full sure! Upon her dying rose,
She drops a look of fondness, and goes by,
Scarce any retrospection in her eye;
For she the laws of growth most deeply knows,
Whose hands bear, here, a seed-bag – there, an urn.
Pledges she herself to aught, ‘twould mark her end!
This lesson of our only visible friend,
Can we not teach our foolish hearts to learn?
Yes! yes! – but, oh, our human rose is fair
Surpassingly! Lose calmly Love’s great bliss,
When the renewed for ever of a kiss
Whirls life within the shower of loosened hair! |
„Joc pe-Anotimpuri, nu joc pe Vecii!”
Le spune Firea, tuturor ce-n mână
N-au gaj mai scump ca pumnul de ţărână!
Şi nu dă greş, – de-a sale armonii
E sigură… Spre roza vie încă
Un pic, cald cată-un pic, şi trece; dar
În urmă ochii ei se-ntorc arar;
Căci a pătruns a vieţii lege-adâncă.
Ea – cumpănă-ntre urnă şi juneţe,
S-ar pierde de s-ar lua în serios!
Povăţul ăstui dascăl sănătos
Nu-i chip a’noastre inimi să-l înveţe?
Şi prea senină-i omeneasca floare,
Când vieţi sorb iar a Dragostei dogoare
Din sărutări, sub răvăşite plete. |
