„The Gardener I” de Rabindranath Tagore

„Ah, poet, the evening draws near; your hair is turning grey.
Do you in your lonely musing hear the message of the hereafter?”
„It is evening, the poet said, and I am listening because some one may call from the village, late though it be.
I watch if young straying hearts meet together, and two pairs of
eager eyes beg for music to break their silence and speak for them.
Who is there to weave their passionate songs, if I sit on the shore of life and contemplate death and the beyond?
The early evening star disappears.
The glow of a funeral pyre slowly dies by the silent river.
Jackals cry in chorus from the courtyard of the deserted house in the light of the worn-out moon.
If some wanderer, leaving home, come here to watch the night and
with bowed head listen to the murmur of the darkness, who is there to whisper the secrets of life into his ears if I shutting my doors, should try to free myself from mortal bonds?
It is a trifle that my hair is turning grey.
I am ever as young or as old as the youngest and the oldest of this village.
Some have smiles, sweet and simple, and some a sly twinkle in their eyes.
Some have tears that well up in the daylight, and others tears that are hidden in the gloom.
They all have need for me, and I have no time to brood over the afterlife.
I am of an age with each, what matter if my hair turns grey?”
Cine va fi acolo să-i şoptească tainele vieţii, dacă eu, închizându-mi

Life of my life, I shall ever try to keep my body pure, knowing that thy living touch is upon all my limbs.
I shall ever try to keep all untruths out from my thoughts, knowing that thou art that truth which has kindled the light of reason in my mind.
I shall ever try to drive all evils away from my heart and keep my love in flower, knowing that thou hast thy seat in the inmost shrine of my heart.
And it shall be my endeavour to reveal thee in my actions, knowing it is thy power gives me strength to act.

Mine eye hath played the painter and hath stelled
Thy beauty’s form in table of my heart.
My body is the frame wherein ‘tis held,
And perspective it is best painter’s art;
Ochiul, pe placa inimii mi-a scris,
pictor timid, întreaga-ţi frumuseţe
şi-o rană-i trupu-nconjurând ca-n vis
mirajul perspectivei cu dulci feţe
For through the painter must you see his skill;
To find where your true image pictured lies,
Which in my bosom’s shop is hanging still,
That hath his windows glazèd with thine eyes.
că numai pictoru-ar putea afla
adevăratul chip pictat, cel care
în inima-atelier va sta
al cărui geam, privirea ta îmi pare.
Now see what good turns eyes for eyes have done:
Mine eyes have drawn thy shape, and thine for me
Are windows to my breast, wherethrough the sun
Delights to peep, to gaze therein on thee.
Vezi, ochii mei li-s ochilor robiţi,
pictează-ai mei şi-ai tăi, vitrai de temple
ţin loc ferestrei mele, străjuiţi
de soarele ce vine să-i contemple.
Yet eyes this cunning want to grace their art:
They draw but what they see, know not the heart.

I would like to sit on the edge of the sidewalk
and wait for night to fall at the end of the street.
The loneliness
I now feel resembles still
the loneliness of my childhood,
when I did not know that time
is lost forever. Is there nothing that can redeem
that time? Is there not a single gesture
that remains true, even as I sit in the street,
my head buried in my hands?
The light crumbles on objects,
the objects turn into leaves,
they turn into leaves.

„Gitanjali – II” de Rabindranath Tagore

When thou commandest me to sing it seems that my heart would break with pride; and I look to thy face, and tears come to my eyes.
All that is harsh and dissonant in my life melts into one sweet harmony — and my adoration spreads wings like a glad bird on its flight across the sea.
I know thou takest pleasure in my singing. I know that only as a
singer I come before thy presence.
I touch by the edge of the far-spreading wing of my song thy feet
which I could never aspire to reach.
Drunk with the joy of singing I forget myself and call thee friend
who art my lord.

Those hours, that with gentle work did frame
The lovely gaze where every eye doth dwell
Will play the tyrants to the very same,
And that unfair which fairly doth excel;
For never-resting time leads summer on
To hideous winter, and confounds him there,
Sap checked with frost, and lusty leaves quite gone,
Beauty o’er-snowed, and bareness everywhere.
Că timpul mişcător târăşte vara
şi în hidoasa iarnă va s-o-ndrume,
seve-nfrânează cu, de gheaţă, gheara
şi-i frumuseţea ninsă, gol e-n lume.
Then were not summer’s distillation left
A liquid prisoner pent in walls of glass,
Beauty’s effect with beauty were bereft,
Nor it nor no remembrance what it was.
Din distilarea verii ne rămâne,
fluid captiv între pereţi de sticlă,
al frumuseţii duh, ajuns fărâme
şi-apoi şi el prelins în marea frică.
But flowers distilled, though they with winter meet,
Lose but their show; their substance still lives sweet.
Dar florile ce iernii-i înfrâng casna
doar chipu-şi pierd. Rămâne-le mireasma…
