Logic does well at school;
And Reason answers every question right;
Poll-parrot Memory unwinds her spool;
And Copy-cat keeps Teacher well in sight: |
În școală Rațiunea este totul
Iar Logica rezolvă orice ipoteze;
Micuțul Papagal repetă ca netotul,
Profesorul nu uită să noteze; |
The Heart’s a truant; nothing does by rule;
Safe in its wisdom, is taken for a fool;
Nods through the morning on the dunce’s stool;
And wakes to dream all night. |
Și harul ei ascuns e socotit prostie;
În bănci o prinde toropeala,
Iar noaptea se trezește să viseze. |

I had grown weary of him; of his breath
And hands and features I was sick to death.
Each day I heard the same dull voice and tread;
I did not hate him: but I wished him dead.
And he must with his blank face fill my life –
Then my brain blackened; and I snatched a knife. |
Mă plictisea, de-aproape, de departe;
Mâini, chip, răsuflu mă scârbeau de moarte.
Un glas, un pas, din zori și până-n seară…
Și nu-l uram; dar aș fi vrut să moară.
Cum, să nu scap de-acest neisprăvit
O viață? Și-am pus mâna pe cuțit. |
But ere I struck, my soul’s grey deserts through
A voice cried, ‘Know at least what thing you do.’
‘This is a common man: knowest thou, O soul,
What this thing is? somewhere where seasons roll
There is some living thing for whom this man
Is as seven heavens girt into a span,
For some one soul you take the world away –
Now know you well your deed and purpose. Slay!’ |
Când să lovesc, din tainiți sufletești,
Un glas: “Măcar să știi ce săvârșești!
E-un om de rând; știi, Suflete, cumva,
Ce este? Unde-i zarea, undeva,
E vreo ființă pentru care el
E zeci de ceruri prinse-ntr-un inel.
Ei îi răpești întreaga lume sfântă.
Acum că rostul îl cunoști, împlântă!” |
Then I cast down the knife upon the ground
And saw that mean man for one moment crowned.
I turned and laughed: for there was no one by –
The man that I had sought to slay was I. |
Svârlind cuțitul, am văzut, mirat,
Că omul e de-un nimb încununat.
Și-am râs – nu era nime-n jurul meu
Iar osândita jertfă eram eu. |

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare. |
Ce-i viața asta dacă-n griji scăldat
No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows. |
No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass. |
No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night. |
Pâraiele-nstelate în amiezi
Sticlind ca bolta în al nopții miez. |
No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance. |
Să prinzi ocheada Mândrei nu ai când,
Nici să-i privești picioarele dansând; |
No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began. |
S-aștepți până îmbogățește gura-i
Surâsul ce-l stârni căutătura-i. |
A poor life this is if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare. |
Rea-i viața asta dacă-n griji scăldat

Toll no bell for me, dear Father dear Mother,
Waste no sighs;
There are my sisters, there is my little brother
Who plays in the place called Paradise,
Your children all, your children for ever;
But I, so wild,
Your disgrace, with the queer brown face, was never,
Never, I know, but half your child! |
Dragă Tată, dragă Mamă;
Iată-le pe surioarele mele, iată-l pe frățiorul meu mezin
Jucându-se într-o poiană ce Rai se cheamă,
Copiii voștri, toți, copiii voștri pe vecie;
