To you, my purse, and to no other creature
I lament, for you are my lady dear.
I am so sorry now that you are light!
Surely, unless you make me heavier cheer,
I may as well be laid upon my bier.
Therefore unto your mercy thus I cry:
Be heavy again, or else surely I must die. |
Doar ţie, nu altcui, o, punguşoară,
Mă jelui eu, căci, doamnă, dragă-mi eşti!
Mi-i greu că mi te afli-aşa uşoară,
Căci negreşit, de nu mi te-mplineşti,
Mă şi văd rămăşiţe pământeşti;
Drept care milei tale strig de zor:
Fii iarăşi grea, căci altfel iaca mor! |
Promise this day, before it may ever be night,
that I may hear the blessed clanking of you,
or see your color like the bright sunshine,
that never yet has had a peer in terms of yellowness.
You are my life, only you,
queen of content and of good company, steers my heart,
be heavy again, or else surely I must die. |
Now, purse, who are to me my life’s one light,
my life’s one savior, down in this world here,
help me out of this city through your might,
since you refuse to be my treasurer.
For I am clipped like priest or an austere monk.
But yet I pray you of your courtesy,
be heavy again, or else surely I must die. |
Tu ce lumină-a vieţii mi-ai fost doară
Şi mântuire-n caznele lumeşti,
Ajută-mă din târg s-ajung la ţară,
Când văd c-a-mi fii vistiernic nu voieşti;
Mi-s ras ca scăfîrliile popeşti.
Ci tot mă rog de tine arzător:
Fii iarăşi grea, căci altfel iaca mor! |

O conqueror of the isle of Brut’s Albion,
who, through your lineage, are King of it, and our free choice,
this song to you I send; set your mind,
you who can all our woes amend,
upon this little flower from Helicon. |
O,-învingător în Albion, ca Brut,
Tu cuvenit alesul când te-am vrut
Monarh, închinu-ţi stihurile mele;

When Earth’s last picture is painted and the tubes are twisted and dried,
When the oldest colours have faded, and the youngest critic has died,
We shall rest, and, faith, we shall need it – lie down for an aeon or two,
Till the Master of All Good Workmen shall put us to work anew.
And those that were good shall be happy; they shall sit in a golden chair;
They shall splash at a ten-league canvas with brushes of comets’ hair.
They shall find real saints to draw from – Magdalene, Peter, and Paul;
They shall work for an age at a sitting and never be tired at all! |
Veni-vor sfinţi (Petru şi Pavel) model să le fie;
Durata şedinţei de poză putând depăşi o vecie. |
And only The Master shall praise us, and only The Master shall blame;
Andd no one shall work for money, and no one shall work for fame,
But each for the joy of the working, and each, in his separate star,
Shall draw the Thing as he sees It for the God of Things as They are! |
Doar Maistorul ne-o lăuda; şi să mustre doar Maistorul poate;
Ci (toţi) pentru-a muncii plăcere, sub propria zodie stând;

The sun at noo holds high the balance of the day.
The sky gives itself to the waters down below.
With soft eyes, the cattle passing look
fearless at their shadows in pools.
Branches vault a huge roof
tell the whole story of the world. |
după îndepărtata-i copilărie,
ca un cerb batrân
după ciuta lui pierdută în moarte. |
Everything is happy to be what it is.
Only my blood shouts through the forest
in search of its lost youth
like an old stag
in search of the mate death stole from him. |
Poate a pierit subt stânci.
Poate s-a cufundat în pământ.
În zadar i-aştept veştile,
numai peşteri răsună,
pâraie se cer în adânc. |
Perhaps she lies under some rocks somewhere.
Perhaps the earth has swallowed her up.
I wait in vain for news
but only caves resound
and springs ask to go deeper. |
Blood without answer,
if the earth were filled with silence
you would hear the death run of the deer. |
Tot mai departe şovăi pe drum —
şi, ca un ucigaş ce-astupă cu năframa
o gură învinsă,
închid cu pumnul toate izvoarele,
pentru totdeauna să tacă,
să tacă. |
On and on, swaying on the road —
like a killer who gags with a handkerchief
I try to stop the mouth of springs
forevere, forever,
with my fist. |

The day begins to droop,—
Its course is done:
But nothing tells the place
Of the setting sun. |
Ziua s-a dus, – umbrele au prins
Să se pogoare;
Nici nu mai licăre urma
Stinsului soare. |
The hazy darkness deepens,
And up the lane
You may hear, but cannot see,
The homing wain. |
Poţi auzi pe drumeag,
Prin pâcla deasă,
Cum vin, deşi nu se văd,
Care, spre casă. |
An engine pants and hums
In the farm hard by:
Its lowering smoke is lost
In the lowering sky. |
Bate batoz dând zor
Pe arii, în fund;
Frânt, fumu-i se pierde
Sub cerul scund. |
The soaking branches drip,
And all night through
The dropping will not cease
In the avenue. |
Stropi vor tot pica de pe
Unde nuiele
De-a lungul nopţii-ntregi,
Peste şosele. |
A tall man there in the house
Must keep his chair:
He knows he will never again
Breathe the spring air: |
Un om, la conac, numa-n jeţ
Cată să stea:
Ştiind că el aerul proaspăt
Nu-l va mai bea; |
His heart is worn with work;
He is giddy and sick
If he rise to go as far
As the nearest rick: |
Cu inima stoarsă de munci,
Confuz şi olog,
Nu-i chip să ajungă măcar
La primul stog. |
He thinks of his morn of life,
His hale, strong years;
And braves as he may the night
Of darkness and tears. |
Unde-s, dârji, anii săi juni?
Parc-a fost ieri!
Silit e să-nfrunte oftând,
Sumbrele seri… |

When men were all asleep the snow came flying,
In large white flakes falling on the city brown,
Stealthily and perpetually settling and loosely lying,
Hushing the latest traffic of the drowsy town;
Deadening, muffling, stifling its murmurs failing;
Lazily and incessantly floating down and down:
Silently sifting and veiling road, roof and railing;
Hiding difference, making unevenness even,
Into angles and crevices softly drifting and sailing.
All night it fell, and when full inches seven
It lay in the depth of its uncompacted lightness,
The clouds blew off from a high and frosty heaven;
And all woke earlier for the unaccustomed brightness
Of the winter dawning, the strange unheavenly glare:
The eye marvelled—marvelled at the dazzling whiteness;
The ear hearkened to the stillness of the solemn air;
No sound of wheel rumbling nor of foot falling,
And the busy morning cries came thin and spare.
Then boys I heard, as they went to school, calling, |
Când duşi dormeam noi toţi, sosi ninsoarea-n zbor:
Cădeau fulgi mari peste cetatea cafenie
Ce se-adunau în strat pufos, tiptil, stăruitor,
Stingând în toropita urbe forfota târzie;
Blând sugrumând şi învelind orice murmure;
Tot pogorând mereu mai jos, cu lenevie;
Cernând căsuţe, străzi, zaplaz, sub văluri pure;
Gropi şi unghere netezea plutirea-i calmă,
Egalizând şi rotunjind orice conture.
O noapte-ntreagă ninse, şi câng gros de-o palmă
Ajunse afânatul troian al zăpezii uşoare,
În cerul geros s-a spart a norilor valmă;
A zorilor iernii, ciudaţi, necereşti, scânteind,
Iar ochiul uimit fu, uimit de albeaţa atotbiruitoare;
Urechile numai tăcerea văzduhului prind;
Chemările zorilor zornici firave şi rare fiind;
Apoi auzii hărmălaie de prunci tropotind înspre şcoale; |

De-acuma nu te-oi mai vedea,
Rămâi, rămâi cu bine!
Mă voi feri în calea mea
De tine. |
We part for ever from today,
Farewell beloved one;
And I, unto my death, your way
Will shun. |
