Once this world was so steadfast and so stable
That a man’s word was his obligation,
And now it is so false and mutable,
That word and deed, in their conclusion,
Are unalike, for so turned upside down
Is all this world, by gain and selfishness,
That all is lost for lack of steadfastness. |
Era stei, stâncă lumea dineoare
Şi datorie grea cuvântul dat;
Acum făţarnică-i şi-amăgitoare,
Când fapta de cuvânt s-a dezbinat,
Precum vedem, tot lucru-i răsturnat;
Cu mită şi cu îndărătnicie,
Se pierde tot prin nestatornicie. |

There came a ghost to Margret‘s door,
With many a grievous groan,
And ay he tirled at the pin,
But answer made she none. |
Gemea un duh fără-ncetare
La-al nopţii ceas ascuns
Şi-n darn clintea din ivăr – Margret
Nu vrea să-i dea răspuns. |

Madame, you are of all beauty the shrine
Within the circle of the mappamund;
For as the crystal glorious you shine,
And like ruby are your cheeks round.
And therewith you’re so merry and jocund
That at a revel when I see you dance,
It is a salve for my every wound,
Though you with me suffer no dalliance. |
Domniţă, tu, frumseţe minunată,
Făr’ de pereche-n lumea cea rotundă,
Precum cleştarul străluceşti curată,
Şi-obrajii tăi rubine ştiu s-ascundă;
Aşa zglobie eşti, aşa iocundă
Încât a te vedea dansând sprinţar
Balsam îmi e pe rana sângerândă,
Măcar că tu de mine n-ai habar. |
For though I fill a cask with tears of mine,
Yet that woe may my heart not confound;
Your demi-voice that so small you twine
Makes my thought with joy and bliss abound.
So courteously I go with love bound,
That to myself I say, in penance,
It suffices me to love you, Rosamund,
Though you with me suffer no dalliance. |
Cu lacrimi chiar de umplu o covată
În jale nu prea inima-mi se-afundă;
Suava-ţi voce, dulce susurată,
Îmi scaldă sufletu-n ferice undă.
Aşa mă strânge-a dragostei za crudă
Că mie zicu-mi, suferind amar:
Destul că te iubesc eu, Rozamundă,
Măcar că tu de mine n-ai habar. |
Never did pike so wallow in galantine
As I in love do wallow, and am wound,
For which full oft I of myself divine
That I am truly Tristan the second.
My love will not grow cold or be unsound;
I burn with amorous pleasure, at every chance.
Do what you will, I will your thrall be found,
Though you with me suffer no dalliance. |
N-a fost pe lume ştiucă-n sos muiată
Ca mine-n apa dragostei afundă,
Încât gândesc în sine-mi câteodată
Că sunt al doilea Tristam sub osândă.
Nu se răceşte-amoarea mea fierbândă;
Ard veşnic în al dorului pojar.
Tu fă ce vrei, eu slugă-ţi sunt preablândă,
Măcar că tu de mine n-ai habar. |

| First Booke. Canto I. |
Cartea întâia. Cântul I. |
A gentle Knight was pricking on the plaine,
Ycladd in mightie armes and silver shielde,
Wherein old dints of deepe woundes did remaine,
The cruell markes of many’ a bloody fielde;
Yet armes till that time did he never wield.
His angry steede did chide his foming bitt,
As much disdayning to the curbe to yield:
Full jolly knight he seemed, and faire did sitt,
As one for knightly giusts and fierce encounters fitt. |
Un mândru Făt da pinteni peste plai,
Înveştmântat în fier, cu scut de-arghir
Pe care zimţi de răni adânci vedeai
Tot semn de-ncrâncenate-mpotriviri;
Fier nu purtase încă în turnir;
Sirep fugaci, muşca zăbala grea
Ne-nduplecat să rabde frâul-zbir;
Frumosul Făt, ce falnic se ţinea
Ca unul vrednic de-ncleştări, înfiorate prea. |
And on his brest a bloodie Crosse he bore,
The deare remembrance of his dying Lord,
For whose sweete sake that glorious badge he wore,
And dead, as living, ever him ador’d:
Upon his shield the like was also scor’d,
For soveraine hope which in his helpe he had.
Right faithfull true he was in deede and word,
But of his cheere did seeme too solemne sad;
Yet nothing did he dread, but ever was ydrad. |
Purta pe pieptu-i cruce sângerie,
Drag suvenir murindului Domn sfânt,
Şi-n dragul Lui purta el crucea vie.
Drag sus în cer, precum şi pe pământ.
Pe scut acelaşi semn şi-a fost săpând,
Nădejde-naltă-n naltul ajutor;
Cinstit era în faptă şi-n cuvânt,
Dar chipu-i prea înnegurat de-un nor;
El cel mereu temut, ci nicicând temător. |
Upon a great adventure he was bond,
That greatest Gloriana to him gave,
(That greatest Glorious Queene of Faery lond)
To winne him worshippe, and her grace to have,
Which of all earthly thinges he most did crave:
And ever as he rode his hart did earne
To prove his puissance in battell brave
Upon his foe, and his new force to learne,
Upon his foe, a Dragon horrible and stearne. |
Cu mare faptă se ştia dator
Domniţei Gloriana cea crăiasă,
Regina-n glorii-a Ţării Zânelor ‒
Lui slavă, şi-al ei har să-şi dobândească,
Cea mai râvnită-avere pământească;
Şi tot gonind, gonind, simţea ardoare
Mult să străluce-n luptă voinicească
Frângând vrăjmaş, ca braţul să-şi măsoare,
Frângând vrăjmaş, Balaur, fiară-ngrozitoare. |

Shattered are the high statutes of heaven, which were
created to endure eternally; for I see that the seven
shining gods can wail and weep and suffer, even as a
mortal creature on earth. Alas! Where can this come
from? I die almost with fear at this aberration. By the
eternal word it was determined of yore that not a drop
of tears should escape down from the fifth circle; but
now Venus so weeps in that her sphere that she will drown us on earth. |

The smoke upon your Altar dies,
The flowers decay,
The Goddess of your sacrifice
Has flown away.
What profit then to sing or slay
The sacrifice from day to day? |
Pe-altarul vostru fumul scade
Şi crinii pier –
A jertfei voastre zeitate
S-a dus la cer.
La ce bun dar a-i hărăzi
Prinos de imunri, zi de zi? |
„We know the Shrine is void,” they said,
„The Goddess flown—
„Yet wreaths are on the altar laid—
„The Altar-Stone
„Is black with fumes of sacrifice,
„Albeit She has fled our eyes. |
Ei zis-au: „Ştim că nimenea
În templu nu-i –
Dar crini se pun pe lespedea
– altarului
Ce-l înnegrim cu-al jertfei fum,
Măcar că Ea lipseşte acum. |
„For, it may be, if still we sing
„And tend the Shrine,
„Some Deity on wandering wing
„May there incline;
„And, finding all in order meet,
„Stay while we worship at Her feet.” |
Căci, poate, tot nălţând cântare,
Şi tot slujind,
Un Zeu cu aripi rătăcitoare
Va simte jind
De-a se opri, spre-a ne lăsa
Să ne smerim la glezna Sa. |
