„Phyllida and Corydon” de Nicholas Breton

In the merry month of May,
In a morn by break of day
Forth I walk’d by the woodside
Whenas May was in his pride;
There I spyed all alone,
Phyllida and Corydon.
Much ado there was, God wot!
He would love and she would not.
She said, never man was true;
He said, none was false to you.
He said, he had loved her long;
She said, Love should have no wrong.
Corydon would kiss her then;
She said, maids must kiss no men
Till they did for good and all;
Then she made the shepherd call
All the heavens to witness truth
Never loved a truer youth.
Thus with many a pretty oath,
Yea and nay, and faith and troth,
Such as silly shepherds use
When they will not Love abuse,
Love, which had been long deluded,
Was with kisses sweet concluded;
And Phyllida, with garlands gay,
Was made the Lady of the May.
La ceas vesel de florar,
Zorii când abia răsar,
Pe sub crâng o apucai
Să mă plimb în toi de mai;
Şi ce văd într-un cotlon?
Phillida şi Coridon.
Vai, ce zarvă! El voia
Drăgăleală; dânsa, ba.
Ea: Bărbaţii nu au inemi…
El: Făţarnic nu-ţi fu nimeni…
El zicea că-i drag de ea
Ea: Fii blând cu dragostea…
Coridon s-o pupe vru;
Ea, lui: Nu se cade, nu,
Dacă nu-i pe totdeauna…
Şi-a chemat păstoru-ntr-una
Cerul, martor drept să-i fie
Că nu-i dor cu viclenie –
…Tot cu „hai” şi „ba” şi „zău”,
Şi cu „sunt cinstit flăcău”
Cum prostuţii baci ştiu spune
Când iubesc cu gânduri bune,
Şi-au pus dragostei pecete
Cu-n sărut pe îndelete.
Şi-a ajuns Phillida, iată,
Doamna Mai, încununată.

„Description of Spring” de Henry Howard

The soote season, that bud and bloom forth brings,
With green hath clad the hill and eke the vale:
The nightingale with feathers new she sings;
The turtle to her make hath told her tale.
Summer is come, for every spray now springs:
The hart hath hung his old head on the pale;
The buck in brake his winter coat he flings;
The fishes flete with new repairèd scale.
The adder all her slough away she slings;
The swift swallow pursueth the flies smale;
The busy bee her honey now she mings;
Winter is worn that was the flowers’ bale.
Dulce-anotimp când muguri ies, şi flori,
Când văi primesc strai verde, şi muncele,
Când cântă,-n nou penet, privighetori
Iar turtureii vin la turturele.
Se face cald, cresc lujerii priori;
Prin strungi pierd cerbii coarne vechi şi grele;
Şi năpârlesc prin cătini căpriori;
Înoată ştiuci, în zale noi şi ele.
Vezi iuţi lăstuni de gâze vânători;
Îşi leapădă năpârca-ntreaga-i piele;
E dusă iarna – gâde-al florilor;
Strâng miere-acum albine hărnicele.
And thus I see among these pleasant things
Each care decays, and yet my sorrow springs.
Şi-n raiu-acesta orice păsuri mor –
Doar eu rămân aleanului dator…

„Sonnet LXXV” de Edmund Spenser

One day I wrote her name upon the strand,
But came the waves and washed it away:
Again I wrote it with a second hand,
But came the tide, and made my pains his prey.
Vain man, said she, that doest in vain assay
A mortal thing so to immortalize,
For I myself shall like to this decay,
And eek my name be wiped out likewise.
Not so (quoth I), let baser things devise
To die in dust, but you shall live by fame:
My verse your virtues rare shall eternize,
And in the heavens write your glorious name.
Where whenas Death shall all the world subdue,
Out love shall live, and later life renew.
Ci tu prin har vei dăinui în lume;
Voi nemuri în vers făptura-ţi rară,
Şi-n cer voi dăltui cerescu-ţi nume.
Şi-acolo, când pieri-va lumea toată,
Trăi-vom cu iubire-mprospătată.

„Robin Hood and Little John”

When Robin Hood was about twenty years old,
With a hey down down and a down
He happend to meet Little John,
A jolly brisk blade, right fit for the trade,
For he was a lusty young man.
Când avea Robin douăzeci de veri
Ding-dong, ding-dong, ding-dong,
L-a cunoscut pe micul John,
Cel mult isteţ, la treabă fără preţ,
Şi tânăr, şi-n puteri.

„Sir Patrick Spens”

The king sits in Dunfermline town
Drinking the blude-red wine;
‘O whare will I get a skeely skipper
To sail this new ship o’ mine?’
În turnul Dumferling stă riga,
Cu roşu vin s-adapă:
– „Vreau un năier isteţ, să-mi poarte
Corabia pe apă!”

„King John and The Bishop”

Off an ancient story Ile tell you anon,
Of a notable prince that was called King Iohn,
In England was borne, with maine and with might;
Hee did much wrong and mainteined litle right.
Povestea veche ce veţi asculta
E despre John, crai mare-n vremea sa,
Născut englez, tronând ca un satrap;
În toate celea şi-a făcut de cap.
