Verbul a agrea este venit din franceză – agréer, și are două sensuri fundamentale. Se referă, mai întâi de toate, la „a vedea cu ochi buni, cu simpatie pe cineva; a trata cu bunăvoință; a primi favorabil”, fiind sinonim cu a plăcea, a simpatiza.
Înseamnă, pe de altă parte, „a da consimțământul”, iar folosit cu precădere în politică și diplomație, are în vedere acțiunea de „a accepta un reprezentant diplomatic”.
