I sprang to the stirrup, and Joris, and he;
I gallop’d, Dirck gallop’d, we gallop’d all three;
“Good speed !” cried the watch, as the gate-bolts undrew;
“Speed!” echoed the wall to us galloping through;
Behind shut the postern, the lights sank to rest,

Săltai, dar, în şea, apoi Joris – şi dânsul – şi-alei!
Pornirăm galop – şi Dick, nebuneşte – tustrei.
„Drum bun!” spuse straja trăgând de zăvor;

Iar pe la cinci îşi zice: – „M-aş
Plimba oleacă prin oraş.
Să fac rost de-un rădăvan.
S-a-ntunecat. Să-i dau deci zor.
Ce-or fi făcând ai mei? Mi-e dor.
Nu i-am văzut de-un an. |

La paşa vine un arab,
Cu ochii stinşi, cu graiul slab.
– „Sunt, paşă, neam de beduin,
Şi de la Bab-el-Manteb vin
Să-l vând pe El-Zorab. |
An Arab to pasha draws near,
His eyesight dim and his voice sere.
„From Bedouins, pasha, I descend,
From Bab-el-Mandeb – I intend
To sell El-Zorab here. |
