From where I sit, I see the stars,
And down the chilly floor
The moon between the frozen bars
Is glimmering dim and hoar. |
De aici văd, sus, constelaţiile,
Şi jos podeaua de gheaţă
Luna cu haloul îngheţat
Sticleşte în întuneric, albită de vreme. |
Without in many a peaked mound
The glinting snowdrifts lie;
There is no voice or living sound;
The embers slowly die. |
Nămeţii de zăpadă
Zac întunecaţi
Nu se aude nici un glas, nici un sunet;
Jarul păleşte încet. |
Yet some wild thing is in mine ear;
I hold my breath and hark;
Out of the depth I seem to hear
A crying in the dark; |
Totuşi ceva sălbatic îţi răsună-n auz,
Îmi opresc răsuflarea şi ascult;
Din adânc mi se pare c-aud
Un strigăt în beznă. |
No sound of man or wife or child,
No sound of beast that groans,
Or of the wind that whistles wild,
Or of the tree that moans; |
Un strigăt de bărbat, de femeie sau de copil,
Un strigăt de sălbăticiune muribundă,
Poate e şuierul vântului,
Poate suspinul copacilor;
|
I know not what it is I hear;
I bend my head and hark,
I cannot drive it from mine ear,
That crying in the dark. |
Ceea ce aud nu ştiu ce este;
Îmi înalţ capul şi ascult,
Şi nu pot alunga din auz
Această tânguire din beznă. |

The poet in his tree of hell
will see life steadily and see it well.
The world is round. It moves in circles.
The poet in his vision tree
imparts immaculate necessity
to murder, ignorance and lust. |
Poetul în copacul său infernal
întrezări-va viaţa mereu şi foarte bine.
Lumea e rotundă. Se roteşte.
Poetul în copacul viziunii sale
deosebeşte necesitatea imaculată
de omor, ignoranţă şi desfrâu. |
The world is round. It moves in circles.
Poetry, the poet’s curse,
will look, for better or for worse,
like a simple monk in meditation
cloaked in apparent deprivation:
in its ambiguous nakedness
glows the raiment of its otherness. |
Lumea e rotundă. se roteşte.
Poezia, blestemul poetului,
va avea grijă de mai bine ori de mai rău,
ca un simplu călugăr în timpul rugii,
înveşmântat în privaţiuni aparente:
în ambiguităţile ei despuiate
ard straiele multiplelor ei deosebiri. |
The world is round. It moves in circles.
With laughter on his haunted face,
a madman captive in a leaf’s embrace,
the poet wildly shakes his tree… |
Lumea e rotundă. Se roteşte.
Cu un surâs pe faţa lui schimonosită
un nebun captiv îmbrăţişând o frunză,
poetul îşi scutură cu furie copacul… |

How can I, that girl standing there,
My attention fix
On Roman or on Russian
Or on Spanish politics?
Yet here’s a travelled man that knows
What he talks about,
And there’s a politician
That has both read and thought,
And maybe what they say is true
Of war and war’s alarms,
But O that I were young again
And held her in my arms |
Cum oare să mai fiu atent
Privind această fată
La Roma, Spania, Rusia şi
Politica lor toată?
Dar colo-i un bărbat umblat,
El ştie ce vorbeşte,
Dincoace-un politician
Ce gândeşte şi citeşte,
Şi poate-aşa-i cum ne-alarmează,
Războaie prevestind –
Dar o! dac-aş fi tânăr iar,
Pe Ea la piept s-o prind! |

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow. |
A cui pădure-i, cred a şti.
Dar casa lui nu e pe-aci,
N-o să mă vadă cum opresc
Privind la ninsele-i stihii. |
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year. |
Măruntu-mi cal s-o minuna
De ce am mas altundeva,
Nu-n sat, ci în păduri, spre lac,
În noaptea iernii cea mai grea. |
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake. |
Scutură frâie şi zăbală,
De ce-am oprit, din ce greşeală,
Şi altceva nu se aude
Decât, prin vânt, neaua domoală. |
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep. |
Plăcuţi sunt codrii, adânci, târzii,
Dar ce-am promis am a-mplini,
Şi mult de mers până a dormi,
Şi mult de mers până a dormi. |

Softly, in the dusk, a woman is singing to me;
Taking me back down the vista of years, till I see
A child sitting under the piano, in the boom
of the tingling strings
And pressing the small, poised feet of a mother
who smiles as she sings. |
In spite of myself, the insidious mastery of song
Betrays me back, till the heart of me weeps to belong
To the old Sunday evenings at home, with winter outside
And hymns in the cosy parlour, the tinkling piano our guide. |
Insidioasa melodie mă fură, n-aş vrea, dar ştiu bine că
Inima-mi plânge după acele seri de duminică
De acasă, când afară sta iarna şi în plăcutul salon
Ne călăuzea printre imnuri al pianului zvon. |
So now it is vain for the singer to burst into clamour
With the great black piano appassionato. The glamour
Of childish days is upon me, my manhood is cast
Down in the flood of remembrance, I weep
like a child for the past. |
Acum în zadar cântăreaţa se-avântă-nsoţită de marele
Negru pian, appassionato. Fastuoase hotarele
Copilăriei m-au năpădit, bărbăţia mi-e dusă-n torent
De-amintiri, ca un prunc suspin după neprezent. |
