„Despărţire” de Mihai Eminescu

Să cer un semn, iubito, spre-a nu te mai uita?
Te-aş cere doar’ pe tine, dar nu mai eşti a ta;
Nu floarea vestejită din părul tău bălaiu,
Căci singura mea rugă-i uitării să mă dai.
To not forget our loving, should I a sign implore?
I’d ask for you, but dearest, you are your own no more.
Nor do I beg a flower from in your golden hair;
Forgetfulness, beloved, is but my single prayer.

„Când amintirile…” de Mihai Eminescu

Când amintirile-n trecut
Încearcă să mă cheme,
Pe drumul lung şi cunoscut
Mai trec din vreme-n vreme.
When memory of bygone days
My spirit would detain
Down long and often trodden ways
I travel the past again.
Deasupra casei tale ies
Şi azi aceleaşi stele,
Ce-au luminat atât de des
Înduioşării mele.
Above your house are lit as then
The same bright stars of old,
That shone those summer evenings when
My passion’s tale I told.
Şi peste arbori răsfiraţi
Răsare blânda lună,
Ce ne găsea îmbrăţişaţi
Şoptindu-ne-mpreună.
And through the branches’ silver lace
The moon peers from above.
As when midst lovers’ warm embrace
We whispered of our love.
A noastre inimi îşi jurau
Credinţă pe toţi vecii,
Când pe cărări se scuturau
De floare liliecii.
Our hearts a solemn vow then took
To love for ever and aye;
While tenderly the lilac shook
Its blossoms on our way.
Putut-au oare-atâta dor
În noapte să se stingă,
Când valuri de isvor
N-au încetat să plângă,
Could ever such a love as ours
In night’s oblivion wane,
While still among the thirsty flowers
The bubbling springs complain;
Cum luna trece prin stejari
Urmând mereu în cale-şi
Când ochii tăi, tot încă mari,
Se uită dulci şi galeşi?
While still above the woods asleep
The moon her journey plies;
While still your lips their beauty keeps
And coaxing are your eyes?

„Mai am un singur dor” de Mihai Eminescu

Mai am un singur dor
În liniştea serii
Să mă lăsaţi să mor
La marginea mării;
Să-mi fie somnul lin
Şi codrul aproape,
Pe-ntinsele ape
Să am un cer senin.
Nu-mi trebuie flamuri,
Nu voi sicriu bogat,
Ci-mi împletiţi un pat
Din tinere ramuri.
One wish alone have I:
In some calm land
Beside the sea to die;
Upon its strand
That I forever sleep,
The forest near,
A heaven clear
Stretched o’er the peaceful deep.
No candles shine,
Nor tomb I need, instead
Let them for me a bed
Of twigs entwine.

“Povestea codrului” de Mihai Eminescu

Împărat slăvit e codrul,
Neamuri mii îi cresc sub poale,
Toate înflorind din mila
Codrului, Măriei-Sale.
Mighty emperor is the forest,
High dominion does he wield,
And a thousand races prosper
‘Neath the shelter of his shield.

„Din valurile vremii…” de Mihai Eminescu

Din valurile vremii, iubita mea, răsai
Cu braţele de marmur, cu părul lung, bălai –
Şi faţa străvezie ca faţa albei ceri –
Slăbită e de umbra duioaselor dureri!
Cu zâmbetul tău dulce tu mângâi ochii mei,
Femeie între stele şi stea între femei
Şi întorcându-ţi faţa spre umărul tău stâng,
În ochii fericirii mă uit pierdut şi plâng.
Arise again, beloved, out of the waves of time
With your long golden tresses and marble arms sublime;
Your face that now transparent and pale as wax is pale
Is shaded by the shadow of sorrow’s clinging veil!
Your timid smile caressing does rest within my eyes,
O star amidst fair women, o queen of starry skies;
Your head upon your shoulder its wealth of beauty lays
And in your eyes of wonder I’m lost and weeping gaze.
Out of the void’s dark vapours may you once more uprear,
That to my heart I clasp you, beloved angel dear,
That I in nameless weeping above your face may bend
And on your lips forever my burning kisses spend.
While your cold hand unheeding I clasp against my breast,
Closer, yet still closer, against my bosom pressed.
Alas, not thus the darkness gives back its own again;
Now through its icy vapours I see your shadow wane.
With hanging arms and helpless once more I am alone
Before a dream unending of hours that have gone;
In vain with arms outstretching my soul your shadow craves,
Dear one, I cannot reach you amidst time’s rolling waves.

„Sara pe deal” de Mihai Eminescu

Sara pe deal buciumul sună cu jale,
Turmele-l urc, stele le scapără-n cale,
Apele plâng, clar izvorând în fântâne;
‘Tis eve on the hillside, the bagpipes are distantly wailing,
Flocks going homewards, and stars o’er the firmament sailing,
Sound of the bubbling spring sorrow’s legend narrating,
And beneath a tall willow for me, dear one, you are waiting.
