„Ode to Himself” de Ben Jonson

Come leave the loathéd stage,
And the more loathsome age,
Where pride and impudence in faction knit
Usurp the chair of wit,
Indicting and arraigning, every day,
Something they call a play.
Let their fastidious, vain
Commission of the brain
Run on, and rage, sweat, censure, and condemn:
They were not made for thee, less thou for them.
Urâta scenă tu o lasă –
Şi epoca – mai urâcioasă!
Trufia s-a-nţeles cu impostura
Să-nlăture cultura,
Tunând şi fulgerând mult prea adese
’Mpotriva unor „piese”.
Ce dacă jalnica lor minte
Te foarfecă, asudă, minte,
Dă-n gropi? N-au fost făcuţi ei pentru tine,
Dar nici tu pentru dumnealor, vezi bine!

„Eulogy to Shakespeare” de Ben Jonson

To the memory of my beloved, MR. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE: AND what he hath left us. Întru memoria preadragului meu AUTOR Mr. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE şi tot ce ne-a lăsat el nouă
To draw no envy (Shakespeare) on thy name,
Am I thus ample to thy Booke, and Fame;
While I confesse thy writings to be such,
As neither Man, nor Muse, can praise too much.
‘Tis true, and all men’s suffrage. But these wayes
Were not the paths I meant unto thy praise;
For seeliest Ignorance on these may light,
Which, when it sounds at best, but eccho’s right;
Or blinde Affection, which doth ne’re advance
The truth, but gropes, and urgeth all by chance;
Or crafty Malice, might pretend this praise,
And thine to ruine, where it seem’d to raise.
These are, as some infamous Baud, or Whore,
Should praise a Matron. What could hurt her more?
But thou art proofe against them, and indeed
Above th’ ill fortune of them, or the need.
Ca să te mântui, Shakespeare, de pizmaş,
Eu cărţii, faimei tale li-s chezaş.
Zic, deci, că nu pot muzele, nici omul
Să-ţi laude, pe cât se cade, tomul.
E drept, şi toţi te preţuie. Dar vreau,
Ca să te laud, alt făgaş să iau.
Căci ignoranţa bate calea veche
Sunând – ecou, şi-atâta – în ureche,
Ori oarba prefăcătorie care
Minţind slăveşte totul la-ntâmplare.
Sau poate fi maliţia şireată,
Slăvind făţarnic, când se surpe cată.
E ca şi când o târfă-ar vrea să dea
Preţ unei doamne… Hulă nu-i mai grea,
Ci tu scutit de ele eşti şi peste
Nevoile şi pacostele-aceste.

„Song: to Celia” de Ben Jonson

Drink to me only with thine eyes,
And I will pledge with mine;
Or leave a kiss but in the cup,
And I’ll not look for wine.
The thirst that from the soul doth rise
Doth ask a drink divine;
But might I of Jove’s nectar sup,
I would not change for thine.
Din ochi închină-mi cupa ta,
Cu-ai mei şi eu mă-nchin;
Lasă-ţi sărutul în pahar
Şi nu mai jindui vin!
Când e-nsetată inima,
Vrea un pocal divin –
Dar nici cu-al zeilor Nectar
Pe-al tău să-l schimb nu ţin.
I sent thee late a rosy wreath,
Not so much honouring thee
As giving it a hope, that there
It could not withered be.
But thou thereon didst only breathe,
And sent’st it back to me;
Since when it grows, and smells, I swear,
Not of itself, but thee.
Un braţ de roze-ţi trimisei,
Nu doar că se cuvine,
Ci ca să sper că tot frumoase
Rămân, şi că vor ţine…
Dar tu, abia privind spre ele,
Le-ai şi întors la mine –
De-atunci, mă jur, la fel miros,
Ci nu a flori: a tine.
