Ea devenise încetul cu încetul cuvânt,
fuioare de suflet de vânt,
delfin în ghearele sprâncenelor mele,
piatră stârnind în apă inele,
stea înlăuntrul genunchiului meu,
cer înlăuntrul umărului meu,
eu înlăuntrul eului meu. |
Little by little she became a word,
bundles of soul on the wind,
a dolphin in the clutches of my eyebrows,
a stone provoking rings in water,
a star inside my knww,
a sky inside my shoulder,
and I inside I. |

Somnoroase păsărele
Pe la cuiburi se adună,
Se ascund în rămurele –
Noapte bună! |
All those sleepy birds
Now tired from flight
Hide among the leaves
Good-night! |

Bright star, would I were steadfast as thou ar –
Not in lone splendour hung aloft the night
And watching, with eternal lids apart,
Like nature’s patient, sleepless eremite,
The moving waters at their priestlike task
Of pure ablution round earth’s human shores
Or gazing on the new soft-fallen mask
Of snow upon the mountains and the moors –
No – yet still steadfast, still unchangeable,
Pillow’d upon my fair love’s ripening breast,
To feel for ever its soft fall and swell,
Awake for ever in a sweet unrest,
Still, still to hear her tender-taken breath,
And so live ever – or else swoon to death.

Sclipindă stea, de-aş fi neschimbător
Ca tine – nu-n splendoarea nopţii ţintuit,
Prin pleoape larg căscate singur privitor
Ca un sihastru al naturii nedormit
La apele ca preoţii spălând
Pământul omenesc cu abluţiuni,
Sau contemplând uşoara mască de curând
Căzută, a zăpezii, pe genuni;

Tăcerea se izbeşte de trunchiuri, se-ncrucise,
se face depărtare, se face nisip.
Mi-am întors către soare unicul chip,
umerii mei smulg din goană frunzişe.
Câmpul tăindu-l, pe două potcoave
calul meu saltă din lut, fumegând.
Ave, mă-ntorc către tine, eu. Ave!
Soarele a izbucnit peste lume strigând. |
Silence strikes the tree trunks, upon itself retracing,
turns to distance, turns to sand.
I have turned my only face toward the sun,
my shoulders scatter leaves in this racing.
Cutting through the field – up on two shoes
my horse leaps, steaming, from the clay.
Ave, I am turning to you, I, Ave!
The sun has burst across the heavens, crying. |

Sunt suflet în sufletul neamului meu
Şi-i cânt bucuria şi-amarul –
În ranele tale durutul sunt eu,
Şi-otrava deodată cu tine o beu
Când soarta-ţi întinde paharul.
Şi-oricare-ar fi drumul pe care-o s-apuci,
Răbda-vom pironul aceleiaşi cruci
Unindu-ne steagul şi larul,
Şi-altarul speranţei oriunde-o să-l duci,
Acolo-mi voi duce altarul. |
A soul in the soul of my people am I
And sing of its sorrows and joys,
For mine are your wounds and I cry
Whenever you do, drinking dry
That chalice of poison that’s meant for Fate’s toys.
Whatever your pathway, together we’ll ail,
We’ll bear the same cross and we’ll feel the same nail;
Your banner and creed will be mine;
The shrine of my hopes I shan’t fail
To set by the side your shrine. |
