„Lament for the Makaris” de William Dunbar

I that in heill wes and gladnes,
Am trublit now with gret seiknes,
And feblit with infermite;
Timor mortis conturbat me.
Eu care-am fostu sănătos,
De beteşuguri azi sunt ros,
Pierit, slăbit din ce în ce:
Timor mortis conturbat me.

Ciorchinii-mi plini de patimi cu sevă-mbătătoare;
Nature’s sacred command is: mating be the aim,
Stirred by it, in space, eagles seed for mates;
To find bridegrooms, dolphins offer their chest to the waves,
Even stars in the skies team into constellations…
Like a vine twig I tend towards you, proud oak,
My grapes full of passions with heady zest;
I entrap you in alluring adoration
And every verse I offer is but one more embrace.
We are both victims of the same sweet law,
Because love does not care for the fortuitous form;
Were you a woman, would I have chosen you?
Why do you leave me now tearing yourself away?
Halved and thrown in the dust of defeat,
How shall I carry alone love’s heavy burden?

„My Soul Is Dark” de Byron

My soul is dark – Oh! quickly string
The harp I yet can brook to hear;
And let thy gentle fingers fling
Its melting murmurs o’er mine ear.
If in this heart a hope be dear,
That sound shall charm it forth again:
If in these eyes there lurk a tear,
‘Twill flow, and cease to burn my brain.
Mi-e sufletul întunecat. Hai, zi-mi
din harpa ta cu-alinătoare strune,
îndeamnă de pe ele spre-nălţimi
un murmur tandru în auz să-mi sune.
Nădejdi de mai rămân, să le adune
din fundurile inimii la loc;
vreo lacrimă stingheră de rămâne,
curgând să-mi stingă al durerii foc.
But bid the strain be wild and deep,
Nor let thy notes of joy be first;
I tell thee, minstrel, I must weep,
Or else this heavy heart will burst;
For it hath been by sorrow nursed,
And ached in sleepless silence long;
And now ‘tis doom’d to know the worst,
And break at once – or yield to song.
Dar cântecul să-l faci intens, adânc,
şi nu întâi să-mi zici de veselie:
căci musai, barde, mi-e acum să plâng,
ori inima-mi s-o rumpe în vecie.
Hrănită ziua numai cu jelie,
tovarăş noaptea dorul greu i-a fost:
de-acu sfârşitul poate doar să-l ştie,
ori poate-n cânt să afle adăpost.

„I’m nobody! Who are you?” de Emily Dickinson

I’m nobody! Who are you?
Are you nobody, too?
Then there’s a pair of us — don’t tell!
They’d banish us, you know.
Eu Nimeni sunt! Tu cine eşti? Se ştie?
Ori poate Nimeni eşti asemeni Mie?
Suntem deci o pereche? Taci, nu spune!
Pe dată ar afla o întreagă lume –
How dreary to be somebody!
How public, like a frog
To tell your name the livelong day
To an admiring bog!

To sit on rocks, to muse o’er flood and fell,
To slowly trace the forest’s shady scene,
Where things that own not man’s dominion dwell,
And mortal foot hath ne’er or rarely been;
To climb the trackless mountain all unseen,
With the wild flock that never needs a fold;
Alone o’er steeps and foaming falls to lean;
This is not solitude, ‘tis but to hold
Converse with Nature’s charms, and view her stores unrolled.
şi unde tu eşti cea dintîi făptură;
nu-i a fi singur, ci a conversa
cu farmecul Naturii, cu măreţia sa.
But midst the crowd, the hurry, the shock of men,
To hear, to see, to feel and to possess,
And roam alone, the world’s tired denizen,
With none who bless us, none whom we can bless;
Minions of splendour shrinking from distress!
None that, with kindred consciousness endued,
If we were not, would seem to smile the less
Of all the flattered, followed, sought and sued;
This is to be alone; this, this is solitude!

Te-aş cere doar’ pe tine, dar nu mai eşti a ta;
Nu floarea vestejită din părul tău bălaiu,
Căci singura mea rugă-i uitării să mă dai.
To not forget our loving, should I a sign implore?
I’d ask for you, but dearest, you are your own no more.
Nor do I beg a flower from in your golden hair;
Forgetfulness, beloved, is but my single prayer.
