„The Retreat” de Henry Vaughn

Happy those early days! when I
Shin’d in my angel-infancy.
Before I understood this place
Appoint’d for my second race,
Or taught my soul to fancy ought
But a white, celestial thought,
When yet I had not walk’d above
A mile, or two, from my first love,
And looking back (at that short space,)
Could see a glimpse of his bright face;
When on some gild’d cloud or flower
My gazing soul would dwell an hour,
And in those weaker glories spy
Some shodows of eternity;
Before I taught my tongue to wound
My conscience with a sinful sound,
Or had the black art to dispence
A sev’ral sin to ev’ry sense,
But felt through all this fleshly dress
Bright shoots of everlastingness.
Ferice vechi-zilele cele
Senine-ale juneţii mele!
Pe-atunci meleagu-acest mi l-aş
Fi hărăzit pentru urmaşi,
Iar sufletul mi-era-ndrumat
Doar spre ce-i sfânt şi nentinat;
Drum lung când nu mă despărţea
De-ntâia dragoste a mea,
Şi când, uitându-mă-ndărăt,
Puteam – scurt licăr – s-o mai văd;
Când la vreun nor de-argint sau floare
Priveam delung cu minunare,
Şi parcă-adulmecam în toate
Noptateca eternitate.
Nici nu-nvăţasem prin păcat
De conştiinţă joc să-mi bat,
Nici meşter nu eram să-ncui
În orice simţ păcatul lui,
Ci presimţeam cum se îmbie,
Spărgând trupescul strai, să-nvie
Voioşi vlăstari de veşnicie.
O how I long to travel back
And tread again that ancient track!
That I might once more reach that plain,
Where first I left my glorious train,
From whence th’enlightened spirit sees
That shady city of palm trees;
But (ah!) my soul with too much stay
Is drunk, and staggers in the way.
Some men a forward motion love,
But I by backward steps would move,
And when this dust falls to the urn
In that state I came return.
O, spre-a mă-ntoarce înapoi,
Ce multă cale bate-voi!
S-ajung din nou pe vechiul plai
Pe unde-ntâi mă răsfăţai;
De unde minţile-nvăţate
Zăresc a Palmilor Cetate
Dar lânced sufletu-mi e-acum,
Ca beat, şi pregetă la drum!
Se zbat s-ajungă unii hăt –
Eu cale-aş face-o îndărăt…
Dar nu mă voi întoarce până
Când tot ce sunt va fi ţărână.

„Thoughts in a Garden” de Andrew Marvell

How vainly men themselves amaze
To win the palm, the oak, or bays,
And their uncessant labours see
Crown’d from some single herb or tree,
Whose short and narrow-vergèd shade
Does prudently their toils upbraid;
While all the flowers and trees do close
To weave the garlands of repose!
Cum tind bărbaţii în zadar
Spre palmi, spre lauri sau stejar.
Vrând trudei lor delungi să-şi pună
Din mândre ierbi sau crengi cunună;
A căror umbre mici, subţiri,
Par înţelepte dojeniri;
În timp ce flori şi arbori ţes
Al tihnei baldachin ales.

„The True Beauty” de Thomas Carew

He that loves a rosy cheek
Or a coral lip admires,
Or from star-like eyes doth seek
Fuel to maintain his fires;
As old Time makes these decay,
So his flames must waste away.
Chip de zână îndrăgeşti?
Buze roşii de mărgean?
Ochi cu scânteieri cereşti?
Cari să-ncingă-al tău alean?
Timpul ce nu stă pe loc,
O să stingă acest foc!
But a smooth and steadfast mind,
Gentle thoughts, and calm desires,
Hearts with equal love combined,
Kindle never-dying fires:—
Where these are not, I despise
Lovely cheeks or lips or eyes.
Cugetul nestrămutat,
Gândul blând, sfiosul dor,
Inimi ce iubesc curat,
Foc aprind nemuritor!
Făr-acestea, mă lipsesc
De obrazul îngeresc!

„The Dream” de John Donne

Dear love, for nothing less than thee
Would I have broke this happy dream;
It was a theme
For reason, much too strong for fantasy,
Therefore thou wak’d’st me wisely; yet
My dream thou brok’st not, but continued’st it.
Thou art so true that thoughts of thee suffice
To make dreams truths, and fables histories;
Enter these arms, for since thou thought’st it best,
Not to dream all my dream, let’s act the rest.
Pentru nimic ce nu-i asemeni ţie
N-aş fi scurtat ăst vis ferice,
Subiect propice
Spre-a cugeta – nu pentru fantezie
Nu-i rău că m-aţi trezit, căci iar
Visez: nu mi-ai frânt visul dar
Gândind la tine, gândurile mi-s
În stare-a face-aieve orice vis;
În braţe vino-mi, căci făcând tu gestul
De-a-mi reteza din vis, juca-vom restul.
As lightning, or a taper’s light,
Thine eyes, and not thy noise wak’d me;
Yet I thought thee
(For thou lovest truth) an angel, at first sight;
But when I saw thou sawest my heart,
And knew’st my thoughts, beyond an angel’s art,
When thou knew’st what I dreamt, when thou knew’st when
Excess of joy would wake me, and cam’st then,
I must confess, it could not choose but be
Profane, to think thee any thing but thee.
De-mi năzărea că-i alta decât tine.
Coming and staying show’d thee, thee,
But rising makes me doubt, that now
Thou art not thou.
That love is weak where fear’s as strong as he;
‘Tis not all spirit, pure and brave,
If mixture it of fear, shame, honour have;
Perchance as torches, which must ready be,
Men light and put out, so thou deal’st with me;
Thou cam’st to kindle, goest to come; then I
Will dream that hope again, but else would die.

The thirstu earth soaks up the rain,
And drinks and gapes for drink again;
The plants suck in the earth, and are
With constant drinking fresh and fair;
The sea itself (which one would think
Should have but little need of drink)
Drinks twice ten thousand rivers up,
So fill’d that they o’erflow the cup.
The busy Sun (and one would guess
By ’s drunken fiery face no less)
Drinks up the sea, and when he’s done,
The Moon and Stars drink up the Sun:
They drink and dance by their own light,
They drink and revel all the night:
Nothing in Nature’s sober found,
But an eternal health goes round.
Fill up the bowl, then, fill it high,
Fill all the glasses there—for why
Should every creature drink but I?
Why, man of morals, tell me why?
Din ploi pământul sec se-adapă
Şi bea, şi iar cerşeşte apă;
Sorb apă pomii, din pământ,
Şi-s verzi şi-s falnici pururi bând;
(Măcar că unii cred că n-ar
Fi prea setoasă) Marea chiar
Bea râuri zeci de mii – şi doară
Stacana-i dă pe dinafară.
Focosul Soare (şi-ar tot crede
Acel ce-obrazu-aprins i-l vede
Că nu prea suferă de sete)
Bea Marea, iar când e s-apună,
Şi stele beau din el, şi Lună:
Îşi sug lumina lor săracă
Şi-ntreaga noapte beau şijoacă…
Nimic nu-i sobru şi uscat
În largul Firii – necurmat
Auzi prin jur „noroc, vecine!”
Deci umple-mi cupa, umple pline
Şi-aceste căni… De ce oricine
Să bea e slobod, iar eu nu?
Zi, moralistule, zi-mi tu!
