„Solitude” de Byron

To sit on rocks, to muse o’er flood and fell,
To slowly trace the forest’s shady scene,
Where things that own not man’s dominion dwell,
And mortal foot hath ne’er or rarely been;
To climb the trackless mountain all unseen,
With the wild flock that never needs a fold;
Alone o’er steeps and foaming falls to lean;
This is not solitude, ‘tis but to hold
Converse with Nature’s charms, and view her stores unrolled.
şi unde tu eşti cea dintîi făptură;
nu-i a fi singur, ci a conversa
cu farmecul Naturii, cu măreţia sa.
But midst the crowd, the hurry, the shock of men,
To hear, to see, to feel and to possess,
And roam alone, the world’s tired denizen,
With none who bless us, none whom we can bless;
Minions of splendour shrinking from distress!
None that, with kindred consciousness endued,
If we were not, would seem to smile the less
Of all the flattered, followed, sought and sued;
This is to be alone; this, this is solitude!

Te-aş cere doar’ pe tine, dar nu mai eşti a ta;
Nu floarea vestejită din părul tău bălaiu,
Căci singura mea rugă-i uitării să mă dai.
To not forget our loving, should I a sign implore?
I’d ask for you, but dearest, you are your own no more.
Nor do I beg a flower from in your golden hair;
Forgetfulness, beloved, is but my single prayer.

„Ode to Evening” de William Collins

If aught of oaten stop, or pastoral song,
May hope, chaste Eve, to soothe thy modest ear,
Like thy own solemn springs,
Thy springs and dying gales;
Şi boarea ta ce moare;

„Sonnet XLIII” de Edna Saint Vincent Millay

What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why,
I have forgotten, and what arms have lain
Under my head till morning; but the rain
Is full of ghosts tonight, that tap and sigh
Ce buze ale mele sărutară,
şi care braţe m-au cuprins fierbinte,
de ce şi unde, nu-mi aduc aminte.
Dar noaptea-mi bat în geam şi mă-nfioară
Upon the glass and listen for reply,
And in my heart there stirs a quiet pain
For unremembered lads that not again
Will turn to me at midnight with a cry.
strigoii ce se tânguie pe-afară;
Thus in the winter stands the lonely tree,
Nor knows what birds have vanished one by one,
Yet knows its boughs more silent than before:
Cum singur, fără cântători, copacul
se-ntreabă iarna unde-şi duc ei veacul,
cu crengi tot mai tăcute şi înfrânte,
I cannot say what loves have come and gone,
I only know that summer sang in me
A little while, that in me sings no more.

Tir‘d with all these, for restful death I cry:
As, to behold desert a beggar born,
And needy nothing trimm‘d in jollity,
And purest faith unhappily forworn,
Scârbit de tot, izbava morţii chem,
cel drept cerşeşte, laşul îşi arogă,
nevolnic, a magnificenţii togă
şi gândul pur se stinge sub blestem.
And gilded honour shamefully misplac‘d,
And maiden virtue rudely strumpeted,
And right perfection wrongfully disgrac‘d,
And strength by limping sway disabled,
Cinstirea-i împărţită grosolan,
e pângărită casta feciorie,
perfecţiunea-i frântă de urgie
şi-ngenuncheat, orice sublim elan.
And folly (doctor-like) controlling skill,
And simple truth miscall‘d simplicity,
And captive good attending captain ill.
And art made tongue-tied by authority,
A artei gură trândavu-o astupă,
nerodul, iscusinţii-i porunceşte
şi adevărul singur se smereşte
robit mişelului ce stă să-l rupă.
Tir‘d with all these, from these would I be gone
Save that, to die, I leave my love alone.

Splendor is not for me nor is glory
Nor wonderment nor the ever-erring rifle
Yet beauty remains an open wound
Nor the dawn of this whispered fountain
Nor the aspen nor the chasm I have crossed
Beholding the beaming foot of your shade
Yet beauty remains an open wound
Then I would return to press my mouth against it
Then I would feel what pain’s shivers are like
In the pot radiant peonies dropping
The body of petals seized by heat seized by fear
Eternal well’s night of sin
Neither remembrance nor glory remains
Cold lips still seeking hot lips
Yet beauty remains an open wound
A space open to imagination
Splendor its glory its wonderment its terror
Timeless time paceless echo aimless steps
